Book I

IntroductionMany years ago a woman sent me an email with a link to her site called Words of Wisdom. In it she had a list of various Reggae artists including myself and Biblical quotes directlyrelated to their lyrics. I was very surprised how she connected many of my songs to variousverses in the Torah and Tanach. Most of these verses I was not aware of. Maybe a few mighthave passed through my mind on a Shabbat years ago when I wrote some of my songs, forexample ‘Bribes Blinds the Eyes of the Wise’ from Parsha Mishpatim. Most of the quoteshowever, I was not familiar with.I realized that I don’t really recall how and when I wrote many of my songs. As RoshHoshanna 2014 approached I thought it would be an interesting project to actually thinkabout the Parsha and try and encapsulate some of the ideas in song. Although many of mysongs have been inspired by ideas from the Torah they are generally personal in nature. Inever thought to connect any songs directly to the Parsha or catalogue those that were relatedin any way. They say that every Rosh Hoshanna is a good time to add something new, turn a new leaf, orbegin a new project. With this in mind I began this project on Rosh Hoshanna 2014. Theidea was to find the connections in my songs to relevant ideas in the Parsha as well as thinkof new songs inspired by various concepts found in the weekly Parsha. The gift of a writer isto say the most with the least amount of words; to encapsulate larger ideas into a few phrasesthat can be put into a song. I have a long way to go to make my songs shorter and sweeterand more poetic however life is a work in progress and there is no better place to start thantoday. Each weekly section is part of a unified whole and every passage and letter is related one tothe other. Just as the cells in the body work together so does the living Torah. It can bepondered and examined in sections but is part of a whole that we experience even though it isbeyond our understanding. As a musician I have always been attracted to what is called ‘roots’ music, whether we arespeaking about reggae, ska, blues, or many other forms. The more advanced musiciansappreciate the simplicity of music; they listen well and leave space for others to enter. Theyare gentlemen with little ego, leaving room for the music to enter and play them, rather thanbe played. The Torah among many other things teaches this simplicity and balance between ahealthy amount of ego and the nothingness that allows great things to flow through.Much of my perspective on the Torah comes from my viewpoint here in Israel where onesees the recurring themes and variations of the Torah climax in an ever changing reality. Thisunfolding prophecy began before my time and will continue long after it.Many years ago in Toronto I spoke about this topic with Rabbi Shmuel Spero and YehoshuaSharfe at the Minsker shul. Yehoshua remarked that the prophecies the Rabbi has studied for

years he now sees unfolding before his eyes. We however who are baal teshuvas are on aneven higher level. Why is that asked the Rav? Because we ‘are’ the prophecy. Heanswered. I added ‘that’s a great idea for a song’ and the song and ‘We Are The Prophecy’was born.Indeed the G-d of Israel, the people of Israel, the Land of Israel and the Torah of Israel are allpart of one thing. If you feel connected to any one of the above it will be well for you. If youfeel connected to all of the above, then your experience will be all the more enriched andvibrant. Some of these songs were created long before I arrived at these ancient shores andeven long before I was connected to my spiritual roots. In addition there are many new songsinspired by the Land and the accumulation of thoughts over the years that have aged likewine. With Hashems help, there will be many revisions in the future as each weekly question opensa new door to another question. One of the nice things about this book and b’h the four booksto come is that not only can you read the book but you can also play it as a CD or playlist. Ifyou own one of these books the playlist will be improved, refined and embellished each yearso that your original copy will continue to grow. In fact it is such a huge undertaking thatmany of the songs here are not produced at the level I would like for lack of time and money.I hope to rectify some of these shortcomings in future editions. I hope you enjoy thiscompilation as much as I am enjoying putting it together. As my friend Rav Spero often says,‘The best is yet to come’. I hope you enjoy the music and Shana Tova.

In The Beginning

BereshitGod made a Garden of Eden and placed maninside and told him one simple thing –Do not eat of the fruit of this tree oryou will be thrown out of the Garden. So what did man do? He built his own gardenand threw God out.(Avraham Heshel)______The building of Israel is the re-buildingof the Garden of Eden. To the extent thatone supports or protests that building isthe extent to which Gods glory is acceptedin the world.______

“God blessed the seventh day and sanctifiedit because on it He abstained from allHis work which God created to make.”(Bereshit 2:3)And on the seventh day – Yom HasShvii -It was the day of rest and meditation(Shabbat Shalom)______“So Hashem God banished him from the Gardenof Eden, to work the soil from which hewastaken. And having driven out the man,He stationed at the east of the Garden ofEden the Cherubim and the flame of theever-turning sword, to guard the way tothe Tree of Life.”(Bereshit 2:3)First there was the WordAnd then there was the lightAnd then He placed this darknesshere between us.(The Word)

The WordWho put this wall between usIn the place where the Garden used to growWe saw the world from the beginningAnd it still glowsPlease don’t let it goOh, first there was the WordAnd then there was the lightAnd then He placed this darknesshere between usOh baby, I don’t want you to say goodbyeI can still see the light in your eyesEven through this darknessCan you still see mine?Over and over and over againOver the letters that we wroteI know I’m never going to find this againAll of the words that we spokeI’m never going to touch this fireI’ll never taste this smokeOh you touched a place I never knew beforeLike an ocean deep insideYou knew it too we sailed togetherLike you were my brideAnd I think you knew it insideOh first there was the WordAnd then there was the light

And then He placed this darknesshere between usOh baby, I don’t want you to say goodbyeI can still see the light in your eyesEven through this darknessCan you still see mine?Oh there are momentsThat are forgottenThere are moments that slip awayOh but sometimes there are momentsEven if you tried you couldn’t run awayI never really had this feelingWatching each shadow disappearNo borders could ever divide usSometimes some moments seem so clearAnd you know it tooYes you know it’s trueOh first there was the WordAnd then there was the lightAnd then He placed this darknesshere between usOh baby I don’t want you to say goodbyeEven through this darknessI can still see your eyesYes tell me - Can you still see mine?

Gates of EdenI’m standing at the edge of nightWhere everything returns to lightI try to see beyond my siteBut nothing can pass throughThe Gates of EdenAnd every dawn must meet the duskAnd all that lives must turn to dustEven you and me and all of usAnd nothing can pass throughThe Gates of EdenAnd lovers try but love gets lostAnd all the saints get double crossedWhile dreamers sail their ships get tossedAnd buried underneath - the Gates of EdenAnd visions fade and heroes fallAnd I wonder in the endIf even any one of themHas seen beyond this wallAnd birds will sing but not for longA wind will come and they'll be goneAnd every paradise become a BabylonAnd nothing can reach beyondThe Gates of EdenAnd all the promises we madeThe cornerstones that we both laidAre twisted now and then renamedBut nothing can replaceThe Gates of Eden

Noach“All you children will be students of Hashem, and abundant will be your children’s peace”(Yeshyahu 54:13)And the houses are filled with learning. And the six million souls are returning.(The Final Revolution)______“Noah was a righteous man, perfect in his generations; Noah walked with God.”(Bereshit 6:9)They say Noah could have been a better man;well I’m doing the best I can.(Traveling on that Line)______

“Noah, with his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, went into the Ark because of thewaters of the Flood.”(Bereshit 7:7)For the final flood already beganTo give a last chance to those who take a standAnd to save only those who ever lent a hand(Dear World)Noah was a survivor. Like a survivor of the Shoa today he may have asked how God could havedestroyed a whole world. He may have wondered whether he could have done more. And likethe survivors of today who see a new flood approaching, he may have wondered how peoplecould make the same mistakes all over again. The UN of his day The Tower of Babel tried tosolve these issues and like today ended up in a confusion of languages.

The Final RevolutionOh the far off flashes of lightningServe to warn of the doom that's approachingAnd the prophets return to inform themBut they blame and defameand they scorn themAnd the winds of destruction are blowingBut the candles resist them by glowingAnd as the cloaks of deception are liftedAnd the pearls in the sands are siftedAnd the houses are filled with learningAnd the six million souls are returningAnd it's the final revolutionAnd it's the oldest one of allAnd it's the final evolutionBetween the mighty and the smallAnd the battle will notbe fought with flowersNor by those who dwell in ivory towersBut in the desertwhere the heat grows hotter

And the should reach out for waterBetween the hearts andthe mind that it opposesBetween the law of the landand the law of MosesBetween Goliath and the sons of DavidBetween what's sordid and what is sacredBetween the seekers of truthand the heartlessThe holy sparks againsta multitude of darkness(Chorus)And when the fire submits to the candleAnd the pot is as great as it's handleAnd when pride is not cherished as a virtueAnd when modesty is not seen as a curfewAnd when the rich are known as the faithfulAnd the poor are seen as the ungratefulAnd the phantom refugees of falsehoodWho demand their imaginary statehoodFrom the soul of it's rightful rulerWho would have soldhis birthright much soonerHad it not been forthe fighters of the ghettoAnd for the oil thatstill burns in the templeBut it's better to be divided in the battleThan to be slaughtered together like cattleAnd the victims whodespise their own religionAnd who plead withthe torturer to inflict themThey will be lost in thebattle to resist themAnd indifference is thegateway to extinctionFor they are starving in a land of plentyWith foreign gods they feastand still their emptyBut the children of a lost generationHave returned to rebuild the Holy Nation(Chorus)

Traveling on this LineWe’ve been through fire and refinedWe been lost so that now we can find. There are roads that are straightand that windAnd it’s no mistake that wetravelled on this line. They say that Noah could have beena better manWell I try to do the best that I canMaybe I’d play it differently next time. But its no mistake that weretraveling this line.Well baby can’t you seeThis is the place we were meant to be.Don’t look back where the sun don’t shine.Ain’t no mistake that weretraveling this line. You might have thoughtit could be done differently. You might have wondered where we might be.Well there ain’t no use sitting and crying.Ain’t no mistake that weretraveling this line.Well we could have gone many other ways.Could have taken years or maybe daysWe could have hurried it or arrived on time. But it’s no mistake thatwere traveling this line.Said baby can’t you seethe beautiful scenery.Don’t look back where the sun don’t shine.

Its no mistake that weretraveling this line.No it aint no mistakeThat were traveling this line.Ah come on. Baby look ahead. If you don’t see from here.Maybe you’ll see further up the line.Get on board, come on now.Traveling on this line

And I will make youa great nation; I will bless you, andmake your name great, and you shall be ablessing. I will bless those who bless you,and him who curse you I will curse;and all the families of the earthshall bless themselves by you”.”(Bereshit 12:1)And the judge saysThe house that you builtIs no longer your ownWell it’s Time to Come Home(It’s Time to Come Home)

______Abraham searched the stars and planted them in the ground. He had the ability to re-direct thedemons that Adam let out of the Garden. He understood the purpose of Creation was for thatGarden to eventually be re-built. His task would be a lonely one and his followers would beconsidered strangers in this world. In the end the Garden will flourish and choose the gardenerwho tends to it and makes it blossom, each in its own way.

Vayera ______And Sarah laughed at herself, saying, “AfterI have withered shall I again have delicateskin? And my husband is old!”(Bereshit 18:12)And ol’ Sarah is laughingAt the news the prophets proclaimBefore her eyes her body is changingBut she swears everything is just the same(Before the Flood) _______

_____Only him that shall come forthFrom within you shall inherit you…And he trusted in HashemAnd He reckoned itTo him as righteousness(Bereshit 15:4-6)And it’s long past the timeThe ships are sailing out andI’m Waiting for a Miracle to Happen(Waiting for a Miracle)______The final revolution is the original revolution. The world will be overturned but not from outside;but from within the soul of man. One must ask himself of every revolutionary what type ofperson is he. Is he a kind hearted and charitable person? Would he invite you for dinner? Or ishe a man filled with hate that will bring a new order more oppressive than the last?

Before the FloodIts getting dark down in the alleyEverybody knows it’s time to leaveI’m walking down the road of the faithfulBut even the faithful don’t believeYou need more than your religionMore courage than you found in the warBaby you don’t have any visionYou don’t even know what you are praying forOh MommaSee the storm clouds up aboveBetter hurry on home babyBetter hurry home before the floodOh MommaOh MommaDon’t get stuck down in the mudBetter hurry home babyBetter hurry home before the floodAnd the war is getting closerThan it’s ever been beforeDr. Jekyll and Mr. HydeJust moved in next doorAnd ol’ Sarah she’s laughingAt the Prophets proclaimBefore her eyes her body starts changingBut she swears everything is just the same(Chorus)Well the President up on the hill

Waiting for a MiracleCity sphinx of brick and boneIt's cold lights watching you aloneYou stand under the starless nightBut angels won't come out tonightTo greet youThe monuments of those who diedTo build these graveyards to the skyAre sinking and you wonder whyThe ground you stand uponIs still beneath youChorus:And it's long past the timeThe ships are sailing out and I'mWaiting for some miracle to happenThe cities eyes that have no soulAnd all that glitters takes it's tollWhen once you were a messengerNow nothing can get throughTo even reach youAttached to things you cannot haveSweet perfumes that will go badEach one better than the last you hadAnd you think your sword of loveWill not defeat you(Chorus)

Dvar Torah – Vayera (2005)In the Parsha Vaerya Avraham is visited by three men, who looked like idol worshipers, but werereally angels. They tell him Sarah will give birth a year later (at age 90), and Sarah laughs, eventhough she sees with her eyes an open miracle. Rashi explains that at the moment they arrivedher body became young again like a 20-year old woman. Still after witnessing this open miracleshe says to herself how can an old man like Avraham give birth to a son, and who are these men, that I should believe them? Later Sarah is reprimanded by Hashem and by her husband forlaughing out of disbelief. Ramban comments that Sarah should have disregarded the looks ofthese men and said ‘may it be so’. I have heard many rabbis discuss this episode and concludewith the moral lesson that we should never scoff at the bearer of blessings but rather we shouldsay ‘amen’. This may be a nice drasha, but do these events really mean?As I sat on a bus on the way to Yerushalayim, I thought about these mysterious verses and triedto unravel the mystery hidden inside. Then it came to me, as I looked at the countrysideunfolding before my eyes. As I gazed upon the skyline, and the cities, and the farms and theorchards that are once again fertile and full of life I was looking at an open miracle; like a 90year old woman becoming 20 again. Now I understood the reprimand to Sarah. And I saw withinit a reprimand to the secular Jews as well as the religious Jews. How could a Jew witness the rebirth of Israel and see with his own eyes the in-gathering of theexiles, the building up of the land, the protection of the clouds of glory, and yet not believe thatthere is a G-d and prophecy and Moshiach. How is it possible to see such open miracles and atthe same time see the religion as old, outdated and disconnected from this?On the other hand, how could religious Jews scoff at angels? The Zionists were considered idolworshipers just like our story and Sarah laughed. She scoffed at these idol worshipers and didn’treally believe in her heart what she saw with her own eyes. She believed in the promise thatHashem had made to Avraham, but could not see what was happening in front of her.If Hashem decided to bring the return to Zion from secular Zionists who demonstrated a love ofthe land, the religious world should have said ‘may it be so’ and gave them a blessing instead ofscoffing. They could have had much more influence in the forming of the nation and could havesaved many lives had they also encouraged Aliyah long before the war. To this day there arethose who scoff at the Zionists while living in glatt kosher America waiting for a prophecy that isunfolding without them. It is this lack of faith within the heart of the faithful, and the lack ofwonder from those who see open miracles that is laughable. And so the birth of Isaac, whose name means ‘laughter’, is the product of this scoffing. Itzchakwho is the ‘sacrifice’ and we who scoff at one side of a two sided story andwonder why we always suffer?

Chayei SarahThe secret of the whole Torah lies in the weeksParsha. There is one simple word that is repeatedmany times throughout this chapter. It is a wordthat defines our goal in life that is always beingchallenged and renewed. That word is ‘the servant’.So the servant placed his handUnder the thigh of Avraham his master…And he said Hashem, God of my master Avraham,May you so arrange it for me this day that YouDo kindness with my master Avraham.’(Bereshit 24:9-12)

___Then he said ‘A servant of Abraham am I. Hashem hasgreatly blessed my master and he has prospered.(Bereshit 24: 34)In this world they praise pirates who pillageAnd hunters who capture shepherdsAnd their flocksBut it’s better to be the tail of lionThan to be the head of a fox(Tail of a Lion) ___

Tail of a LionThey say a messenger has no nameOnly his missionThey say a servant is like a kingWell I’ve searched among the shadows of giantsI’ve been carried under eagles wingsIn this world they praise pirates who pillageAnd hunters who capture shepherdsAnd their flocksBut it’s better to be the tail of lionThan to be the head of a foxThey say the wall that remains from the buildersIs the one attached to the cornerstoneOnly the deeds of a man are his fortuneThat he takes with him to the great unknownIn this world they praise wealth and powerThat buys beauty with her long curly locksBut it’s better to be the tail of a lionThan to be the head of a foxWell the servant is like a kingFor he knows the important thingsAll that glitters to him is not goldHe can’t be bought or soldIn this world truth lies buried and hiddenWhile thieves give motivational talksBut it’s better to be the tail of a lionThan to be the head of a foxOh the measure of a man is dedicationTo place the banner upon the hillTo struggle bringing light from darknessTo further his father’s willIn this world the winner reaps the gloryAnd the loser he walksBut it’s better to be the tail of a lionThan to be the head of a fox

NothingnessFrom far and wide they comeTo conquer her heart and beat their drumAnd to dedicate their empires to herAnd they see her smileBut who can receive itEven the sun comes outTo see it shine – from herAnd what could I whisper to you in the darkWhat secret wordsCould unlock your heart and release youAnd what can I give you that no other man canWhat can I place in your delicate handThat can please youAbsolutely nothingThat’s what I can give to youBut it took me so many years to be nothingAnd I will give all my nothingness to youThe sons of kings arriveWith ships of gold that they place by your sideAnd who am I to even see youBut if Heaven could be seen belowIt must look something like the glowThat shines from your eyes(Chorus)Oh you know there is a ladder that I foundAh and you can climb on it sometimeHigh above there’s a crown of many jewelsAnd I’ve seen your name written on it toAnd oh I’ve never really seen that light beforeTill tonight when I saw you standing by the doorAnd who am I and what can I giveWhen even kings they place their bidsTo be the ones to jump in fire for youI’ll give you not a thing and if you’ll receive itI’ll show you a lightI once had and I hid it there –In your eye

TolodotMany years ago in Toronto I had a weekly Torah class with Mr. Zimmershpitz who was asurvivor of Aushwitz. He told me a number of things that I will always remember. One story hetold me was that inside the camp there was a German who took a liking to him and one day heasked him. Why do we hate you so much? Mr. Zimmershpitz answered in one word. ‘Jealousy.’Jacob said, “Sell, as this day, your birthright to me.” And Esav said, “Look, I am going to die,so of what use to me is a birthright?”(Bereshit 25:31, 32)When the kingdom was in your hands it was meaningless to you. You let it rot, it sat there indespair. Now that it’s been redeemed suddenly you scream. With a loud and bitter cry as if youcared.(Jealousy)

JealousyWhen the kingdom was in your handsIt was meaningless to you.You let it rot, it sat there in despairBut now it’s been redeemed suddenly you screamWith a loud and bitter cryAs if you caredWhen the kingdom was in your handsIt was meaningless to youYou sold it for a bowl of soupWith all your friends thereAnd now it’s been returnedAnd suddenly you screamAnd your eyes burn with a loud and bitter cryAs if you caredJealousy is the root of it allThough your high and mightyOh surely your going to fallBecause when the kingdom was in your handsIt was meaningless to youAnd still it means nothing to you at allOh your father was blindAnd what was meaningless to himWas the weapons of your craftBy which you liveHe thought that you would protectThe son who sat inside his tentNow he cries when he seesJust what you didNow the kingdom is in the handsOf the one to whom it belongsStill there are loud and bitter cries

From the mother who understandAnd strengthens her sons handsIf only he would open up his eyes.Jealousy is the root of it allThough your high and mightyOh surely your going to fallBecause when the kingdom was in your handsIt was meaningless to youAnd still it means nothing to you at all

VayeitzeI gave you a king in My angerAnd took him away in My wrath.(Hoshea 13:11) HaftorahAnd in His anger he sent a KingAnd in His wrath He took him awayBecause we didn't want to listen to the wordsHe had to say(Nothing New Under the Sun)___He took from the stones of the placeWhich he arranged around his head.(Bereshit 28:11)When the stones come aliveAnd are gathered to one placeFrom where they were scattered once before.(Heaven’s Door)___

And it was when Yacov saw Rachel…Then Yacov kissed Rachel; and heRaised his voice and wept(Bereshit 29:10-11)Sweet Angel with your kisses like prayersAnd your coat of many colorsAnd your beauty beyond compare(Sweet Angel)_____

Sweet AngelSweet Angel you rescued me in the nightI saw you from a distanceYou drew me into your lightIt was you who gave me shelterAnd led me to the placeWhere the fountain springs eternalAnd beauty has no faceSweet angel you renewed me with your breathYou reached into my inner beingAnd saved me from my deathAnd though the mountains crumble beneath my feetI will not tremble no I will not weepFor what you have given me today I can't forgetNo, I'm forever in your debtSweet Angel with your kisses like prayersAnd your coat of many colorsAnd your beauty beyond compareHow did you find me how did this come to beI didn't even know I was looking for youOr you were looking for meSweet Angel you put our the raging fireThat blinded me and separated meFrom my true desireSweet Angel with the rope braids in your hairAnd the beams of light a shiningFrom the silver star you wearHow can I repay you for the riches you bestowI have nothing here of valueCompared to the jewels you holdSweet Angel you unlocked the heavenly gateMy soul flies up into your arms whereThe angels congregate
