SPORTING VALUES SPORTING VALUES Through participation in sport, everyone learns invaluable life lessons. These skills are often carried through life and called upon in various settings in and out of the sporting arena. Sport at Redlands is a safe place to begin teaching and nurturing these skills. The Redlands Sporting Values reflect an age appropriate approach for our students and coaches to apply to their sporting endeavours. Page 7 of 36

COMMUNICATION REDLANDS PULSE Redlands Pulse is the School’s intranet and is the information point for all sport details including team lists, draws, sport specific information, live documents and notifications. Pulse is very dynamic and will change and update regularly. We encourage parents and students to become familiar with navigating the sport pages, which should always have the answers to questions or queries you may have. This should be your first point of call if you require any sport-based information. Detailed information on navigating Pulse is outlined in the following pages of this package. The is also a detailed navigation video below of our Junior Sport Pulse Page. The direct link to the Junior Sport page is: HERE. NOTE DAY Note Day is the online Redlands newsletter which is emailed to families weekly on Thursday afternoons or can be found on Redlands Pulse in the top right-hand corner of any page under Key Information. Note Day is the best place for families to stay abreast of announcements and upcoming events. Junior Sport has its own section of Note Day in which the Head of Junior Sport will recount and highlight standout performances from the week past as well as make announcements about what is coming up in future weeks. Initial information regarding upcoming events, team trials, seasonal sport choices, carnivals, etc. will all be announced through Note Day and will direct you to Pulse for further details. ENGAGE PORTAL Electronic permissions for events requiring parent or carer permission are sent through Engage (the School Management Information System) to the email address you have confirmed with the School. You will need to log into your Engage account to grant permission. EMAIL It is a rare event that you will receive a direct email from the Sports Department; instead we regularly update Redlands Pulse and encourage families to refer there before contacting us directly. If you cannot find the information you are looking for on Pulse, please email [email protected]. At the beginning of each term the Head of Junior Sport will send all families an email outlining any important dates and information coming up in the term ahead. LIVE DOCUMENTS As you navigate through the Sport pages on pulse you will see a lot of links to live documents. These documents are ‘live’ in nature and should not be downloaded, printed, displayed on the family noticeboard etc. Changes may come through weekly, daily, or the day before. It is important to check these documents regularly for changes and updates. Please note we do not email out draws, schedules etc. Page 8 of 36

NON-REPRESENTATIVE SPORT NON-REPRESENTATIVE SPORT Students in Years 3-6 are welcome to select a Non-representative Wednesday Sport which means their only commitment would be during school hours (Wednesday Sport Training from 1.30pm – 3.20pm* over the duration of the term). *some sports may run later than 3:20pm There is no Saturday morning commitment for students who elect to do a Non- representative Sport. Most of these sports are not graded by ability and will have a mix of students from Year 3 through to Year 6. Some sports such as Tennis will be split by year group and external coaches may split those students into ability groups. External companies and staff are engaged to run the various sports on offer and as such Non-representative sports do incur charges that will be recharged to your account. The costs of the sports on offer can be found on our sporting page on Pulse and may change from year to year. Transport to and from the venues is provided over the duration of the season and students are supervised by Redlands teaching staff. There is no requirement to purchase a playing uniform as the School Sports Uniform can be worn to the Wednesday sport training session. Water sports may require specific requirements. EXPECTATIONS FOR NON-REPRESENTATIVE SPORT • On Wednesdays students arrive at school in full Redlands Sports Uniform • Students bring with them any sport-specific items they need for their chosen sport, e.g. tennis racquet, swimmers, etc. • Parents discuss/confirm pick up arrangements with their child. Parents are welcome to collect their child from the training venue if that makes for an easier collect. Please note that teachers at the various sports cannot hold return bus departure from the venues for parents who are running late for venue pick up. • The School Rules and Expectations are expected to be upheld at all times when representing the School off site. Page 11 of 36

REPRESENTATIVE SPORT REPRESENTATIVE SPORT Redlands Junior School has numerous representative sporting teams for students to be a part of. Electing a representative sport is a commitment to Saturday morning fixtures with team training taking place during Wednesday sport 1.30-3.20pm. Students may only elect a representative sport on Wednesdays if they intend to play for Redlands teams on Saturdays. Representative Sport at Redlands Junior School is played in the IPSHA (Independent Primary Schools Heads of Australia) competition under the IPSHA guidelines. Redlands offers a choice of Summer and Winter Sports in Boys, Girls and Mixed teams. All students who elect to participate in Representative Sport will participate in trials and be graded into ability and/ or year group based teams and compete against other schools over their respective season. No prior experience is required. Teams are allocated a coach for the season who will be present at Wednesday training and Saturday games. They are the first point of contact for general questions and on game day. However outside this please contact Junior Sport for further concerns and queries. Representative sport does not incur additional charges other than playing uniform which will need to be purchased or hired once sports are confirmed. This playing uniform must be worn to all Saturday morning sporting fixtures and may be worn to training sessions. The School Sports Uniform can be worn to the Wednesday sport training sessions and safety equipment is compulsory at all training and matches. In addition to the Wednesday sport sessions, optional before school training is available for most sports before school in season. They are NOT compulsory; however, offer an excellent opportunity for students to enhance their skills and fitness. Please refer to the Training Schedule and/or Sports Calendar on Pulse. Page 12 of 36

REPRESENTATIVE SPORT EXPECTATIONS FOR REPRESENTATIVE SPORT- WEDNESDAY Students arrive at school in full Redlands Sports Uniform Students bring with them any sport specific items they need for their chosen sport, e.g. boots, shinpads, mouthguards, etc. Attendance at all Wednesday sport training sessions, known absences to complete our Sports Absence form on Pulse. The School’s Rules and Expectations are expected to be upheld at all times when representing the School. Abide by the values and principles that Redlands and IPSHA promotes and encourages. MATCH DAY EXPECTATIONS FOR REPRESENTATIVE SPORT- SATURDAY Attendance at all Saturday morning sport fixtures (approx. a 90min commitment) during the season Absence from sport on match day needs to be completed via the SPORTS ABSENCE FORM found on the Junior Sport Pulse home page. This quick form notifies the Head of Sport and the team coach. The form can be completed ahead of time or on the day, with as much notice as possible to arrange another player. Check the live draw on the Friday to confirm match locations and time. Students arrive at playing venue 30 minutes prior to listed start time in full playing uniform. This enables an appropriate warm up and preparation time for players, coaches and teams. Students bring with them any sport specific items they need for their chosen sport, e.g. tennis racquet, shinpads, boots, water bottle, medication, etc. Coaching is to be left to the Redlands coaches who are employed for this role. Redlands students are humble in victory, gracious in defeat. The School’s Rules and Expectations are expected to be upheld at all times when representing the School Parents are expected to support the School’s Community Code of Conduct and the IPSHA guidelines when attending matches. TEAM TRIALS Sport trials for Redlands representative teams will be held prior to the commencement of the season and may occur during Wednesday sport, before or after school or on a Saturday morning. Term 1 Sports Trials will be conducted in Weeks 1 and 2 of term. Trials for Sports in Terms 2, 3 and 4 will occur at the end of the previous term (this includes Winter Sports and Girls’ Sports). Students are expected to attend trials to be accordingly graded into teams. THE 3 A’S At Redlands, Representative teams are ‘fluid’, meaning teams may change week to week depending on 3 main criteria; The 3 A’s. This is proven to provide fairness for all students and teams with the potential of movement, if warranted. This approach also aids in developing key elements required on and off the field to build a well- rounded athlete. The criteria are: ABILITY - in direct comparison to other students on the team ATTENDANCE - any student who misses 2 trainings or 2 games in a season unrelated to sickness may be moved ATTITUDE - this is based on behaviour at trainings, on game day and not limited to the sporting arena COMMITMENT We ask families to please consider your commitments prior to signing up for representative sport; a commitment to representative sport is a commitment to a team. You must be available for all Saturday games throughout the season. Page 13 of 36

MIXED/ BOYS’ VS GIRLS’ REPRESENTATIVE SPORT MIXED/ BOYS’ SPORTS AND GIRLS’ SPORTS As Redlands is a coeducational school, we try to offer equal opportunities for both boys and girls to participate in sport. However, IPSHA does not run coed competitions. Therefore our ‘Mixed’ representative sports play in the Boys’ IPSHA competition. We also offer some sports as Boys only and Girls only. Contact sports are only allowed to be selected for the gender of that competition for the safety of all participants involved and IPSHA regulations e.g. Boys’ Rugby or Boys’ AFL, Girls’ AFL. Boys’ and Mixed Teams • Boys’ (Mixed) IPSHA Competitions run across two terms; Summer Terms 1 & 4 and Winter Terms 2 & 3. • If you choose a Boys/ Mixed Sport you must see out this commitment for the full year. • Teams from Term 1 will be the same in Term 4* and we will not conduct re-trials between these two terms. If you select Mixed Basketball in Term 1, you must play Mixed Basketball in Term 4. * there is always an opportunity for individual players to move up/down with our 3 A’s • There are approximately 10-12 rounds across the two Terms for the season. Girls’ Teams • IPSHA Girls’ Competitions run termly, with different sports offered each term. • Commitment for Girls’ sport is only one term of games (approximately 7-8 rounds). • Girls have the opportunity to select up to 4 different sports throughout the year. Girls cannot change to a Mixed sport midway through the season for example they cannot join Mixed Football in Term 3. • Therefore as a girl you could select girls’ only sports all year round and change each term. Or you could choose a mixed sport so you can play two terms of that particular sport. Sessions are free of charge and conducted by experienced team coaches. The focus is on development of individual skills and sport- specific fitness and agility training. This is an excellent opportunity for students and teams wishing to upskill and make improvements. Sessions are not compulsory although we do encourage representative players to attend at least one additional skills session a week. Venue Session venues will be outlined on the training time table. They will all take place at the Redlands Junior School in either Dunnet Hall, Redlands House Courts or on the Junior School Oval. Sessions Times Sessions are offered before school from 7am - 8am. More details can be found on Pulse. Students are expected to arrive on time and may not be able to join in if consistently late. CARNIVALS Each year Redlands Junior School holds three major carnivals for students in Years 3-6. The highest placed finishers progress to HICES (Heads of Independent Coeducational Schools) and from there to CIS (Combined Independent Schools) and finally on to NSW PSSA carnivals. The approximate dates of these Carnivals change year to year due to bookings, restrictions, please refer to Junior Sport Calendar and Pulse Key Dates for accurate dates. HICES & CIS REPRESENTATIVE OPPORTUNITIES HICES & CIS Representative Selection The opportunities to trial for HICES and CIS representative teams for particular sports are only available for Years 5 & 6 students. However, Year 3 students may qualify for a Representative Carnival e.g. HICES Swimming Carnival. For all our major carnivals, selection is based upon results achieved in the carnival before. For example, our School swimming team that would attend the HICES Swimming Carnival would be based upon our results from our own swimming Carnival. From there, the HICES Swimming team that would attend the CIS Swimming Carnival would be based upon results from the HICES Carnival. Redlands attend HICES Carnivals as a team and therefore travel together under supervision from sport staff however, if a student qualifies for a CIS Major Carnival (Swimming, Athletics, Cross Country) travel to these trials are the responsibility of each family. Students would then be representing HICES and are under the care and instruction of the HICES Team Manager at CIS Major Carnivals.
