The amount of waste Qatar produces is actually quite astonishing. I’ve recently learned that Qatar produces one of the highest amounts of waste, almost 2 kg per person on a daily basis, among higher income countries, including the United States. The good news is it is not too late for Qatari society to promote awareness and incentives to increase recycling all over the country. The short term implementation of waste management can solve a lifetime of living happily and well. Of course, recycling will not be the solution to solve all and end all, but it is definitely a small step for change in the right direction for environmental welfare. The advantages of recycling include, helping to reduce landfills, saving trees, habitats and animals, conserving energy, and even creating jobs and making money. The direct impact might not be seen in our present day, but in the long term the impact of our choices will be huge. It’s hard to think about our resources being finite as we are so blessed by what our planet provides for us on a daily basis. Yet, think carefully about a planet of 7 billion people producing kilos and kilos of waste each day, and multiply that by years and decades. The numbers are outrageous, and I for sure do not want to be included in those statistics. If you really stop to think about all of the daily harm we place on our beautiful and fragile Earth, and it somehow, continues to provide for us, being environmentally unaware is a severe shame to our health and society. It’s not hard to get accustomed to recycling, even as an adult, and you would be astonished by how much recyclable material goes into your recyclable container, and not directly into the trash. In fact, I can attest my husband was someone who was not previously familiar with the process, and at the very beginning when I signed up our household to recycle, he thought it was going to be too inconvenient. Now I can happily report that he is a full blown supporter of the recycling initiative. It is not hard to change, and I hope others will too44 Society
