Brides of Tortuga

Published by Baltimore Rock Opera Society, 2016-10-27 13:22:50

Description: This raucous, rebellious rock and roll musical begins in 1661 in Calais, France, and crosses the wild & dangerous open Atlantic Ocean and comes to a bloody close in the Caribbean Sea. The show follows Charlotte, a French freedom fighter who must figure out how to captain an unblooded crew and escape the French Navy who are hot on their tails, and Mary, a humble barmaid who gets swept up in the adventure.

Brides of Tortuga features a large cast, epic sets, intensive fight choreography, a stirring vocal ensemble, and live rock band buttressed by strings, horns and a strong percussion section. The show is a powerful statement about rage, self-determination and kicking ass on a boat.

DIRECTOR’S NOTEHistorically, women in stories exist to affirm and encourage concepts of feminine graceand romance, an influence that often victimizes and objectifies the character. She existsto define the male, she suffers to increase his catastrophe, and we empathize with hisloss without much consideration to her humanity. Women who reject societal notions offemininity and possess more masculine traits like courage and strength are portrayedas villainous. Furthermore, women sharing space in stories are seen as deviant andsinister. “Good” women are alone, vulnerable and in need of protection, a notion that hasdangerously influenced societal structure.Archetypal women characters usually exist in isolation. Would she overcome the monster, find her way home, or gain status had it not been for the hero? In Brides of Tortuga our womenhave chosen to escape servitude and start their own stories from the beginning, uniquelytogether. We witness a character in isolation struggling to emulate the hero narrative, andthere is no one there to save her. We celebrate the possibility that women working togethercan be a nuanced and positive experience as well as interesting storytelling. The stakesare high for our brides as they navigate through danger, but they fight side by side andmanage to come to know themselves through knowing each other. How appropriate that their journey begins on the open sea, the origin of life, the greatcreator. In dreams, the ocean represents abundance, mystery, and uncertainty, and indeedthe monsters of the ocean follow our group as closely as the monsters from their home. Inmany ways the ocean is it’s own character, mother and villain all at once, giving and takingand ever present. Our brides choose to “marry” the sea, a nod to the classic marriagetrope but more significantly a commitment to starting anew and finding freedom despiteinevitable danger. –Deirdre McAllister WRITING TEAMORIGINAL CONCEPT KRIS HANRAHANWRITING TEAM RUBY FULTON, SARAH “FLASH” GORMAN,ADDITIONAL SCRIPT INPUT MIKE R. SETS DIRECTOR’S NOTEFrom the pitch, we knew that Brides of Tortuga was going to be somethingdifferent. Our team wanted to be true to the BROS promise of providing youan unforgettable experience. We needed to dream and build at a scale not yetrealized for a BROS show. This is no small challenge. In essence, this set neededto be epic. Through the combined talents of metal and wood workers, scenicpainters, crazed designers, and frazzled engineers, our volunteers deliveredthat vision. This world is both chaos and order. It exists in constant motion andtransition. It is epic. In Panton Redundo!Garrett Bladow, Sets Director DR AMATURG’S NOTE1661, Calais, France.Brides of Tortuga begins in the year 1661 in Calais, a port town in northernFrance. It is the tail end of the Age of Discovery, transitioning into the Age ofPiracy and the Age of Imperialism. Powerful world leaders who had claimedmuch of the newly-discovered lands and their people are fighting for supremacyover both land and sea.Tortuga, an island off the coast of Haiti, is one of these newly-discovered lands, and has been hotly contested, changing hands between the French, the English, and the Spanish several times. In 1645, the French took about 1,650 women toserve as prostitutes and wives to temper the unruly lives of the island’s pirateinhabitants, who had been calling themselves the Brethren of the Coast andsharing the island with its various invaders since at least 1640. In 1655, theisland was captured by the French for the fifth time.France itself is now firmly under the rule of King Louis XIV, who hadsuccessfully crushed two successive rebellions known as the Fronde in themidst of the Franco-Spanish War. The rebels, known as Frondeurs, were at firstparliamentarians (1648-1649), then, in the second Fronde (1650-1653) nobles, who fought against the growing power of the crown under Louis. CharlotteDurand, a former soldier and leader of both Frondes, continues the battle, claiming authority to attack Louis’s ships by decree of a letter of marque, agovernment license allowing a privateer to attack and capture enemy vessels, labeling Louis’s government as the enemy target. She also takes aim at theisland that she believes is still importing women as prostitutes and unwillingpirates’ brides – Tortuga.Mike Martino, Dramaturg
