from the directorWelcome. Welcome to this monstrous beast that consumed the year of 2014 for myselfand the many talented people involved. Hell, for some of them this play has devouredeven more than just this entire year. Beyond the fact that the writing team beganworking on the script in 2013, I imagine the creator (Chuck Green) having horrible stressdreams about this production during the entirety of his miserable childhood. That’sChuck though, peering into the future and coming back with only heartache and despair.Which, to me, is at the core of this script.In my opinion, when science fiction is used properly it inspires us to ask ourselves ifwe are capable of advancing our morality to match our ever sprawling technologicaladvancements. Can humanity believe in magic the more it is replaced with science? Dosocieties need a religious backbone to behave ethically? How far will a people be leadinto a slavery of their own design?This script poses those questions, but in a subtle way. Everyone involved – thedesigners, the actors, the musicans, the volunteers – have walked along the tightropeof balancing the reverent and heavy elements of this production with the fun, party,melt-your-face-off spectacle elements that a BROS show demands.Thank you, Debra Lenik. Thank you.Mason Ross from the writerI have had a huge crush on science fiction ever since I was a kid and this play is like metrying to tell science fiction that I think we are really good for each other and that weshould start a family and stuff. There are bits and pieces in “The Electric Pharaoh” thatcome from very different places, like Asimov’s “Foundation” and Jeff Noon’s “Vurt” aswell as some recent fiction such as a cool little novel called “Wool” by Hugh Howey,which you should read. There is also a good deal of material here from my friends Eli,Dave K, Jen, Stephen, Erica, Dylan, Tim, Zack, and Mason who collaborated with me onthis beautiful story for the BROS, and “Pharaoh” is a beautiful script and score becauseof them. So I want to thank them for their minds and their sweat and for staying up longinto the night with me discussing which characters we should kill and things like that.So this is a story about the end of the world, or the beginning of a new one, or threefriends who happen to be the secret ingredients to a blinding transformation, or maybeit’s the story of what too much electricity does to people. Or maybe it’s about how younever know who you really are until you have lost everything else. l i b r e t to LIBRETTO FOR THE BALTIMORE ROCK OPERA SOCIETY’S 2014 FALL PRODUCTION OF THE ELECTRIC PHARAOHWhen we set out to create music for “The Electric Pharaoh” we wanted to push theboundaries of rock opera by incorporating electronic music and various forms of newtechnology, all while remaining true the legacy of BROS, true rock, and the Dragon King.As a result, this project pushed us all beyond our musical comfort zones to not just writegreat songs but to write an entire score that would enhance the production. This top-down approach allowed us to develop themes and sounds right from the very beginningthat would then be integrated into every aspect of the show. Between the midnightsessions, a killer band, and extensive collaboration, it was like no other production wehad ever been a part of, and we are incredibly grateful for the opportunity.
