AI or Artificial Intelligence is the simulation of human intelligence processed by a machine. It is known to have specific AI expert systems, natural language processing, speech recognition and machine vision. With that being said, AI has sparked a lot of attention both for positive and negative reasons. As for the positive, AI can be seen or found in many products and services such as our computers and phones. AI systems usually work with the ingestion of data correlations and patterns. Then eventually when it is put to use it can generate essays up to full on artworks. Artificial intelligence (AI) is the simulation of human cognition in machines which are encoded to think and perform like humans. The term can also apply to any system that showcases human-like characteristics such as learning and problem-solving. Examples of Artificial Intelligence are Self-Driving and Parking Vehicles, Digital Assistants (Apple’s Siri, and Amazon’s Alexa to name a few) and Robot vacuums. 02 What is the Artificial Intelligence?
What is the Campaign? 03 CAMP- AIGN For our campaign we aim to show the difference between an artwork made fully by AI and one traditionally made by an actual person. So to showcase this we have planned a live competition where we have a robot and a human go head to head as they are given an artwork they must recreate in a few hours. By the end of the competition we see which of the two can produce a better outcome.
RELEVANCE 04 Relevance OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AI has made a huge impact in our industry in many ways. Some ways include It is being used as a tool. For example, it allows artists to create more complex and intricate works. It also helps artists experiment with new styles and techniques. GANS are a type of AI that generates new images based on a training set of images. The training set is used to teach the AI how to create unique images similar to the training sets. This tends to take away creativity from actual artists.
RELEVANCE 05 Relevance OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AI has made a huge impact in our industry in many ways. Some ways include AI tools are being used to preserve artworks. Some museums are using AI to scan and digitize their collections. This helps to protect the artwork from damage and decay. For example, the Google Arts and Culture app uses AI to colorize black and white photos. Thus bringing new life to old photos and preserving them. AI can also be used to create music. There are AI programs that can compose music. It is done by taking a piece of music and then using AI to make changes to it, resulting in new and interesting pieces of music.
06 Storyboard Panel 01 The Host Introducing the AI Robot Our host is introducing our competitors. He proceeds to introduce our first competitor which happens to be the robot named Vehktor. The host then continues to explain the relevance of AI and computers when it comes to art. He states that artists use AI as a creative tool and helps artists experiment with different styles and aesthetics. He continues on to explain the negative aspects of these which include AIs taking away certain jobs from people, accelerated hacking, and AI terrorism.
07 Storyboard Our host then introduces our next competitor, the human named Meruna. He then talks about her, Meruna is a 20 year old freelancing artist. She started painting at a very young age and knew from the very beginning that this is what she was meant to do for the rest of her life. She, like other artists, has felt the impact of the sudden rise of AI with the hardships of finding jobs these days. With that being said, she did not let that affect her love for painting and hopes to show how humans still do things better in the end. Panel 02 The Host Introducing Meruna
The host is explaining the rules of the competition and the rules are, both competitors will have 2 hours to recreate the masterpiece, Ecco Homo by Elias Garcia Martinez. While you guys recreate this and make it your own, our judges will be observing the entire process. As soon as he finished explaining, the competition began. Panel 03 Competition proper 08 Storyboard
PANEL FOUR Vehktor begins his artwork As the host was explaining the rules, Vehktor immediately thinks of how it will do its artwork and begins right when the timer starts. This shows how the AI is just programmed to immediately react and work once things are said or inputted into its system. 09 Storyboard
10 Storyboard Meruna, on the other hand, takes a little longer as she takes the time to really think and PANELplan what she’s going to do. Unlike Vehktor, who is powered to move FIVE quickly, she likes to take the time to compose her thoughts before she Meruna begins proceeds. her artwork
Meruna finally comes up with PANEL an idea and began to drawSIX Meruna is finally happy with the concept she has come up with and proceeds to begin her painting. Behind her is one of the judges checking her progress. Meruna can feel the judge watching over her and she can’t help but get a little worried about the time frame since she can see that Vehktor is about to finish its artwork. 11 Storyboard
PANEL Vehktor has already SEVEN completed its artwork, and the judges are evaluating it. We now go back to Vehktor and we can see that it is about to finish its artwork. Unlike Meruna, we can already start to see how its artwork was rushed and that there is not much detail in its artwork. The judges see the same thing and proceed to start writing comments about the artwork. 12 Storyboard
13 Storyboard PANEL After evaluating the finished EIGHT artwork of Vehktor the judges go back to check on the Meruna is still working progress Meruna has made. They see that she is about to on her piece, but the finish. Just like the judges we see how much detail and work judge is evaluating it she has put into this artwork. It clearly shows how Meruna is truly giving it all she’s got. After seeing this the judges start to write their comments about her artwork
PANELWe now go back to NINEVehktor and we can see that it is about to finish its artwork. Unlike Meruna, we can already start to see how its artwork was rushed and that there is not much detail in its artwork. The judges see the same thing and proceed to start writing comments about the artwork. The results have been released and the winner will soon be declared. 14 Storyboard
PANEL The judges have TEN finished deliberating and seem to be very A winner will be named satisfied and content 15 with their decision. The host gets everyone's attention and announces our winner! This was obviously an easy decision since everyone else can see it as well, but the intricate details and heart poured into the artwork of Meruna clearly outshined Vehktor’s rushed artwork. This shows how at the end of the day a robot can’t do the same kind of work as a human since robot’s can be fed data, skills, and information but it can’t be taught emotions which is a huge part of human’s creativity and makes all the difference.
