FEATURES SIR NAVY Member, PLHIV Support Groups Weathering the viral storm is a 38-year-old Batangas native whose dream was just to give his folks a decent living they deserve. Sir Navy (not his real name) inched the hard wire in Saudi Arabia as a hotel receptionist for three years. At that time, everything on his back was smooth-sailing until a series of recurring flu and skin problems raged the winds of his banners back home. 50

FEATURES With the same grit and optimism in 2007, he made a choice to return to Saudi and fixed his documents. The preparations were going well until the doctor who conducted his medical assessment called him for a closed-door sum up. He was told of being positive to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), an incurable virus that threatens the immune system and makes the victim at risk of serious infections and certain cancers. Sir Navy was 27 then and knew that he acquired the virus from his seven Arabian friends who have invited him to a party which turned out to be a drinking spree. He was helplessly raped, thus, stated how it was “normal” in that country to make out with someone of the same sex. He would tirelessly cry in his room for days right after he was diagnosed, but sooner as he felt the need, he embraced the situation and acknowledged his parents’ comfort. A secondary opinion from experts materialized as he ventured at San Lazaro Hospital for a confirmation test and was given various prescriptions with antiretroviral (ARV) therapy, a lifetime treatment after a positive finding of HIV. The remedy requires a tedious process of enduring all the side effects that go along with every tablet and Sir Navy persistently crossed the red lines to help better himself. In 2008, he insisted on a “drug holiday”—no medications nor ARV. This break resulted to a whopping drop in his weight from 85 kgs to 40 kgs. The year 2012 brought the same toll and worsened his body state which made him decide to localize his treatment at Batangas Medical Center. The worst hit for him happened in 2016 when he was bed-ridden and sapped by a stroke. “Kaya nga sabi ko, kunin na lang ako kasi naaawa na rin ako sa mga nag-aalaga sa’kin. Minsan, nagtangka na nga akong mag-suicide, kaya lang, ayaw talaga eh,” he claimed after trying to overdose himself of the meds he was taking. His family’s assistance, however, pretty much boosted his strength and injected confidence within his immune system to continue overcoming the virus. There were non-government organizations in the virtue of Pinoy Plus Advocacy Pilipinas Inc., Positive Action Foundation Philippines, Inc., and ACHIEVE Inc., which contributed to his recovery through counseling and sex education symposia. During distress, he would occasionally travel and push harder to prosper in his newly founded catering business. As a current member of PLHIV conglomerates, Sir Navy stressed the awareness of safer sex. According to him and as statistics show, younger people are tremendously involved in the growing number of HIV+ cases and it is more obligatory than timely to address this major concern. “Mararanasan mo ‘yung pansandaling ligaya, pero ‘yung hirap, panghabambuhay na ‘yan,” he carefully advised. “Para sa aking mga kapatid, lumaban lang kayo nang lumaban, ‘wag n’yong ihinto. I-enjoy n’yo lang ang buhay n’yo, p’wede pa kayong mabuhay nang normal na hindi n’yo iisipin ang sakit na ito. Tuloy lang ang buhay,” he ended. 51

MULINA CABATAY Mulina “Mo” Cabatay grew up in a family of farmers and fishermen by the shores Volunteer of Lobo, Batangas. With three other sisters raised of early childhood education alongside her and the meager income her father makes out from plowing fields and fishing, her 52 parents planned to let her uncle adopt her at the expense of a surname change. Her father couldn’t take that reality, so she was left squeezed between her dream to pursue her studies and the hands of poverty. When she was 12 and had graduated from elementary with honors, she became even more eager to push through with her side of fate. To resolve the lack of resources, Mo was again to be adopted during her high school years, but it was his parents’ godparents who took the initiative that time. She battled her emotions until it was a week after, “…sabi ko, hindi ko kayang mapahiwalay sa family ko habang nag-aaral ako, baka lalong hindi ako makapag-aral.” She refused to live with other people just for convenience and chose to walk on the rough road instead if it would mean staying in the company of her own blood. And alas, with the three-hundred-peso aid of the government every year, she tramped all her days to finish secondary level. Mo dreamt of building her own scholarship foundation because her initial collegiate years were a tiptoe through the deep waters. This was evident in times when she hardly ate her meals and had patis as her viand, and extremely cut her budget for food and rent alike. She was often ridiculed by her mates with how she only had baong gulay for lunch, but during then she found delight in God and became content with what she had. Consequently, she applied for a scholarship offered by the provincial government and laddered her way up to be a university scholar to make ends meet. Clearly, she worried about her expenses no more and succeeded to save up for future endeavors. She firmly believes that God orchestrated her being [until now], that during a discussion in one of her program courses, the vicious cycle of poverty moved a song in her heart for a call to break it. At that point, Mo found that it was what she was driven for. First, she worked for the Department of Social Welfare and Development which stretched her patience to and understanding of people’s grievances. It was full of unbecoming and unjust operations, but her disposition remained in light of what she took on next. Serendipity brought her in volunteerism to teach English for children at a refugee camp in Bali, Indonesia. She witnessed how injustice held Sri Lankan people as captives under persecutions of the tyrannical north. Her stay paved way for her visit to the second poorest area in Indonesia wherein they developed a curriculum for kids as foundation for a quality non-formal education.

FEATURES Marawi, during the siege, was one of her key destinations to share her good news to in the most unconventional sense, “…to really help the community na magkaroon ng good access sa early childhood education kasi those years ang pinakamagandang foundation to seed desire in reading and writing para sa mga bata.” Mo achieved her degree in Bachelor of Science in Development Communication major in Educational Communication at Batangas State University and she is now on her postgraduate study in Early Childhood Education. At 29, she prays for long-term commitment in ministry and focuses on her career for the continuous learning programs set in the local communities, Marawi, and even Indonesia. Even if her primary dream of putting up her own scholarship establishment was not in accordance with the Lord’s will, she realized the importance of education in general through volunteer work. Indeed, she was passionate to break the long cycle of poverty in the ways she could view of her personal life when she was little. She still is. To breathe is to live and you have dismissed such beliefs that seemed to smear your crystal vision and gauged on the more relevant themes that finally bring zest in the life of you. Reflect on the truth that comes with it. Consider yourself as one of the world’s greatest assets, for no man is ever born without purpose to live. ● 53

It also caters different departments in the University including Food Innovation Center (FIC) and VIP CORALS. Currently, the models that have been made through the fablab are the following: plaques and tokens for VIP CORALS; packaging for FIC; 2D designs for logo and branding for MSMEs; project prototypes through 3D Printing for the Mechatronics Engineering students; thesis prototyping of casing and design of different types of wind turbines for the Electrical Engineering students; and prototype of chase or casing for the electronic trainer of Electronics Engineering students among others. 56

FEATURES What are its plans for progress? LIKHA FabLab will be transferred to the Science, Technology, Engineering, Environment, and Research (STEER) Hub as its permanent location. The facilitators anticipate for a more spacious lab wherein in-house training can be conducted and the possibilities of inviting different schools and institutions to visit the establishment will increase. It also looks forward to opportunities where they can expand their networks such as the Manila Minimaker Fair. They exhibited prototypes and some giveaways to the attendees and made a brief orientation regarding the fablab. The lab aims to establish a positive effect towards the industry through its potential to increase the productivity of business enterprises and also towards the whole student body through providing them the technology they need for thesis prototyping and other school-related projects. LIKHA Fablab is a growing niche that can boost the development of not only the institution, but also the province by providing Batangueños high-quality service and highly- advanced technology. ● 57

FEATURES Sublian festival the barako version of worship and serenade WORDS BY: NORIENE JOYCE D. ANARETA | PHOTOS BY: BRYAN JED C. BAROLA If you’re a tourist planning to visit the cradle of barakos, you surely want to experience the Sublian Festival. Explore the wonders of this feast beyond what Google offers you, for here are more about Sublian that you wouldn’t want to miss. Recalling radiant roots Every year, Batangueños commemorate Christ’s sacrifice and unconditional love by celebrating Sublian, one of their biggest festivals that primarily features the subli dance, from the Tagalog words subsub, which means falling on the head or being in a stooped position and bali, meaning broken and bent. Subli is religious in origin, embarking glorious histories in the towns of Bauan, Agoncillo, and Sto. Nino. It is a ceremonial worship dance in honor of the Holy Cross which was found in the town of Alitagtag during the Spanish rule. The term sublian came to fruition and was adapted in honor of Jesus Christ when He carried the Holy Cross, falling multiple times and standing up again. This prominent festival in Batangas City is celebrated every 23rd day of July, with two long weeks of activities and traditional festivities. This year marked the 31st anniversary of the cultural practice as it was first initiated by then-mayor Eduardo Dimacuha in 1988. The highlight of the annual festival is the “Patimpalak Sublian” where different folk dance groups, organizations, and community dancers participate. 59

FEATURES Serenading beyond windows Filipinos’ culture of harana depicts men singing love and court songs outside the windows of women they adore, but in Sublian, you get to experience the act in a different level. Occupying the whole street, male participants sing and dance with their female partners in synch. The subli is made up of prayers or chants, songs, and dances in a predetermined arrangement. The dancers are made up of one, two, or eight couples. The male dancers shuffle in intense fashion and hit the ground using a bamboo stick, while the females dance with sophisticated wrist and finger movements. Subli dance requires discipline and gracefulness for it is danced for the holy patron. Dancers would be seen looking at the patron and are required to only project a half-smile. Minimal actions of female dancers and large steps of males give a combined dancing pattern in the rhythm of the live music. Now, that is barakos’ version of serenade for you. 60

FEATURES Fad and Fascination, the Filipino Way WORDS BY: EDMARIE JOY E. PANGANIBAN ARTWORKS BY: ARAM JOHN ALFRED M. FLOSA Our fanatical admiration for the so called Pinoy 3Bs is undeniably a national obsession considering that we invest a lot of time (and even money) to watch and support our representatives who compete in basketball tournaments, boxing matches, and international beauty pageants. Our fascination to these fields is culturally entrenched that it is difficult for Filipinos to simply leave it altogether. Be it because of the pride brought by our contenders or just escaping from our mediocre lives, Filipinos would always find time to watch and enjoy any of these three events. 62

FEATURES burger mania What separates Burger Mania from your typical burger restaurant is their pursuit of advocating mental health awareness through incorporating the different terms in psychiatry as the names of their burgers. Their so-called stigma burgers, a menu of gourmet burgers, feature different names derived from personalities and mislabeling of different types of mental disorders. Ms. Lelaii Garcia, owner of Burger Mania, shared that the burgers’ unique names remind that suffering from mental disorders are a reality. Burger Mania is also her way of proving that any mental disability will not define a person. At the age of 21, she was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, a condition characterized by difficulties regulating emotion. The entrepreneur also drew inspiration from her experiences as a victim of bullying, a school drop-out, and a teen mother. In a deeper sense, they launched BurgerBot on their Facebook page to let everyone feel that someone is there whenever they need someone to talk to. This is an online chatting robot which basically gives one the words he might need depending on what he’s feeling that day. Burger Mania has their best-seller Bully Burger at only 155 pesos while their monstrous Big Bad Monster good for six is worth 520 pesos. You just need an additional 15 pesos on any meal for an unlimited drinks upgrade. Aside from serving pastas, slushies, milkteas, and milkshakes, they have also introduced the yangnyeom style or Korean fried chickens this 2019. Presently, Burger Mania has four branches opened from three in the afternoon until eleven in the evening: one located at Dayton Food Park in Lipa City, one at 3:16 Food and Chillout Park in Batangas City, and two operating at Calamba, Laguna. 67

FEATURES dreamland Arts and Crafts Café Originally established as an online business for handmade goods and crafts, Dreamland Arts and Crafts Café took a shot in the dark in 2013 and also tried selling pastas and burgers. This one-of-a-kind avenue for art located at Tambo, Lipa City is a perfect escape and breather from the hustle and bustle that social media brings nowadays. Dreamland Café promotes social media detoxification through their “Disconnect to Connect” policy—no wi-fi, just pure chit-chats partnered with a good choice of food to bring people closer together. This means no mobile phones or any electronic gadgets are not encouraged in order to give way for a more interactive eating experience. Formerly called as Indie Green Culture, this business run by Duran family is evidently an eco-friendly shop as it utilizes repurposed materials as interior decorations. The family’s passion for arts and nature is, in fact, exhibited in their posters, signage, and furniture designs. While they have potato mojos and wings as their best eats, Dreamland Café also targets to further one’s creativity as it houses a separate place for making dreamcatchers, keychains, and other crafts. They also have the so-called “Bed and Breakfast” for stay-in customers which basically offers themed rooms aside from their usual menu. Given this unusual concept, Dreamland Café admitted that they are a bit struggling on how to promote their causes such as non-usage of plastic straws. Nonetheless, this arts and crafts advocate is looking forward to expand their horizons in the near future. 68

FEATURES candlelight cafe This cozy and artsy place at JP Laurel Highway, Lipa City where decorative candles, mural paintings, and a classic coffee experience meet, there will surely be a feast of senses and relaxing mood away from the noise and chaos of the metro. The concept of integrating candle making and different forms of art in a coffee shop is from the creative minds of Ms. Marichu Carstensen, a medical doctor by profession, who happens to found her comfort in the paradigm of arts. Their family recipes especially his brother’s own version of Humba are Candlelight Café’s great eats along with the Rigatoni Pasta mixed with ham or tuna and special white sauce. Apart from serving fresh fruit blends, smoothies, and sandwiches, Candlelight Café has been pioneering numerous efforts to brighten up the art scene on the busy streets of Lipa City. Interested protégés who have enough background in arts may enroll in poster making, cartooning, collage making, and candle-making workshops, just to name a few. Candlelight Café, through their kiddie sessions, also urges the young ones to discover their artistic side and trains them to be well-rounded artists in the near future. Aside from the mini-gallery adjacent to the café, they are organizing a major art exhibit during the 30th day of November. They also conducted an art buffet for different artists in dance, theater, music, and visual arts. “It’s like the food for the soul. For me, kahit anong klaseng art [ay mahalaga], basta nandoon ang urge to create, because it’s worth creating or doing art all the time. It’s very important kasi parang mas rich ang pagkatao [mo] kapag mayroon kang ganoon,” Dr. Carstensen said, believing that one needs to appreciate arts and culture more. ● 69

FEATURES To deal or Not all trolls are cheery just like how the movies portrayed them to be. Unfortunately, in real life, we have these so-called trolls who are quite the opposite. They are real people who lurk online commonly masked behind fake accounts and identities waiting to pounce on their prey. This makes them harder to deal with but it doesn’t mean they’re not manageable. The first step in dealing with these online trolls is to identify them. A troll is someone whose main goal is to upset, provoke, or wreak havoc in the online community by posting digressive or off-topic messages or spewing hate speech. Trolls have a fixed mindset and often resort to personal attacks. Surely, you don’t want to have trolls lurking in your online space but you can’t always avoid them. Famous personalities, viral contents, news sites, and businesses are frequent targets as these trolls often try to discredit or spread false information about their product or content. Still, ordinary netizens, especially those who post something political or controversial, are not exempted from their attacks. So if you certainly have to deal with a troll head-on, here’s what you need to remember: • Respond with facts. Arguing with truthful statements makes your reply sound and valid and will also clear the false accusations or personal attacks thrown at you. • Come up with a witty remark. Sometimes, the way to seal a troll’s mouth is to deliver a punchline that burns. Find a way to turn snide comments to your advantage. Own your flaws and turn them into something positive. • Don’t hate, educate. There are trolls who may just be misinformed or uneducated about an issue as they may belong to those people who easily believe what they see online. As someone educated on that subject, it’s your job to inform people like them. Who knows? They might just come into their senses. If not, at least you get to inform other onlookers who have a shallow understanding of the thing you are talking about. Win-win! • Inform the police, online and offline. If the trolling gets too serious and might indicate possible harm to you, go ahead and report them. Social media platforms have rules regarding offensive posts and take them down upon assessment of the offense. Offenders might also face jail in real-time under cases of cyberbullying or libel. This will indeed teach them a lesson. 70

As a result, they might project a higher appreciation towards you and the content you post and some might come into your defense next time a troll attacks. Other trolls might also be wary of you and will know not to mess with you. However, if you tried all of the above and the trolling still continues, be the bigger person and let it go. In situations like this, the best way to deal with a troll is to not deal with them and here’s why: • Most of the time, dealing with a troll will only lead to an endless argument. A troll wouldn’t step back and won’t stop unless you do. It might be tempting to retaliate to prove your point but remember that real winners in an argument are not always those who got the final say or the last laugh. • Arguing with a close-minded person is unhealthy, draining, and stressful. You don’t need that kind of negativity in your life. • The time invested in dealing with one is time wasted. Instead, you can invest it in fighting for your cause, educating people, or just spreading positivity. There’s so much hate in the world, let’s not contribute to that. • Trolls crave attention. They thrive in an environment where people notice them. Their aim is to upset people and when they do, they won’t rest—so don’t feed them. Don’t give them the satisfaction. Deprive them of their life force and they might not want to bug you again. The existence of trolls remains a threat to the online community but you can handle it just fine if you face it with the right mindset. Remember that you cannot control what is being said to you but you can control how you respond to it. To deal or not to deal, it’s entirely up to you. ● 71

FEATURES Film. Create. Innovate. Batangas Film Society WORDS BY: ROLAND R. REYES PHOTOS BY: CAMILLE FE D. MANGUIAT Let me tell you about a particular organization here in Batangas whose ideals and aspirations are clear reflections of how the art of film affects us in our daily lives. Take note of how a humble inkling amplified into a larger construct for a community with common interests. If there is one thing you need to watch out for the following years, it’s the radiant future for artists who fell in love with the art of producing motion pictures. Well, there’s one group that will be commended for this proactive initiative—the Batangas Film Society (BFS) and they are here for the long haul. 72

FEATURES Purpose-driven family The idea of creating an organization for filmmaking amateurs and connoisseurs was realized after the launch of Mr. Francis Adarlo and his company’s third film competition, CineMMediA. Adarlo, a 24- year old AB Multimedia Arts graduate and the founding president of BFS, drew inspiration from Batangueño neophyte filmmakers’ edge in creating films. This dream turned into reality in the late months of 2018 upon Adarlo’s meet-up with his associates Gabriel Paradero and Dan Arvid Castillo. From the four founders of BFS, it eventually grew into a family of 40 members which are mostly composed of students from different universities and colleges in Batangas City. “Kaunti pa ‘yon,” is what they uttered when asked if they are satisfied with that current number of members. Sharing his exact sentiments during the launch of CineMMediA film festival, the organization president said, “Marunong na silang maka-appreciate eh. Nakakatuwa sa mata ng mga manonood sa CineMMediA. Dito sa Batangas, parang ang sarap pa i-bloom ang kaalaman ng mga tao about film.” 73

FEATURES © BATANGAS FILM SOCIETY Given this existing need, BFS created programs and utilized their connections in order to bring to these hungry enthusiasts the learning that they deserve. The launching of their project, “PELIBATA: Panimula sa Paglikha ng Pelikulang Batangueño” last March 2019 catered 200 filmmakers on a one-day event with invited experts on the field all for free. They also participated in an exhibit that showcased art in all forms during the Art Series 2019 by putting up some of their best works to the screen. Two of their featured films are from Red Spartans Judiel De Ramos (Pan De Regla) and Euclid Reign Beredo (Dina)—both are BS Development Communication students of the University. 74

FEATURES On creating advocacy films Even as a young organization, they have already established an uplifting platform both for newbies and film experts. This group also develops the essential resources that they might need for future film endeavors, aside from the connections that they can build along the way. And the great thing is, there’s no stopping from this society. By staying true to their organization’s motto, they are able to produce high-quality projects while staying track on the learning process. With these skills, they would like to bring back to the community by serving as instruments in shaping public opinion through advocacy films that they will venture to. One of the rampant societal issues nowadays they wish to bring down is the negative approach towards HIV-positive individuals as they strongly advocate to break the stigma and discrimination. As they further describe their plans of letting themselves be catalysts of change through creating timely films, surely, a bright future awaits them. Batangas Film Society offers students and filmmakers the opportunity to be part of their family—one in search for committed companions who share the goal of bringing back to the Batangueño filmmakers a chance not to impress, but express the love for creating films. ● 75 © BATANGAS FILM SOCIETY

FEATURES Towards a hassle-free ride A quick guide for on-the-go students WORDS BY: MARJUN R. RAYOS | ARTWORKS BY: JANNELA MAE V. MAGTIBAY If not the piles of revisions for our thesis manuscript or the week-long major exams, I bet, what really makes our stay in the University more challenging are the unplanned and unexpected course requirements which must be inserted in our already demanding schedule; be it a documentary film, a dance presentation, and even a case study or reaction paper due tomorrow. But daunting deadlines are part of surviving college. Real-time adjustments are crucial for us to easily fit and adapt to certain situations since we’re not kids anymore—reality is our playground. In my almost five years of juggling the demands of my program and the duties of being a pabibo student-journalist (not to mention the occasional family gatherings, late night barkada hangouts, and weekend volleyball games), I somehow gained the courage and license (laughs) to share these nine tips for the ninth year of Sensus Communis on how to stay ready and hassle-free in our own bumpy rides and rough routes. 1 Bringing your own bottled water never gets old. At first, I have this very lame idea that tumblers inside our backpacks are only for the weak. Not until I traveled alone and H2O- deprived for almost four freaking hours. Instead of spending a portion of our allowance to buy quenchers from nearby convenience stores, it’s better to be prepared than to be sorry. Our tumblers are best paired with biscuits or cookies especially when we’re in the middle of long lines or three- hour class discussions. 76

FEATURES 2 Choose comfort over style. What you wear is what you are. And I’m a shirt- jeans-rubber shoes type of a person, instead of slaying the wash day with stylish and striking clothes as OOTD. I always have an extra shirt inside my knapsack since going out for field interviews is a typical day at the office and I really sweat easily. Yup, we can be proper and presentable in simplicity. Plain shirts never disappoint and will never go out of style. 3 Phone, powerbank, and playlist are a priority. Given all the convenience that it could offer, from an instant boredom-buster to a reliable location-tracker, we definitely don’t want to have a trip without our smartphone. Whenever I’m visiting places for the first time, I seek for a steady internet connection to check my destination because I’m not that good at following directions. It’s a no-brainer that a handy powerbank will save our day together with a good choice of playlist while riding the bus home. 4 Do not take coins for granted. That single peso you chose to ignore on the streets will surely matter when you run short of coins for jeepney fares. Plus, never forget and be ashamed to present your school ID and avail your student discount even if it’s a holiday. Keep in mind RA 11314 or the Student Fare Discount Act and LTFRB’s Memorandum Circular No. 2017-024, that’s a friendly tip. 77

FEATURES 5 ATM branches are there for a reason. Iknow I’ve done something right this year at least once after I secured an ATM card through my personal savings account. Imagine passing by a book shop, grocery store, or even a clothing boutique only to find out that you’re short of cash to buy something really important. ATMs will surely save our day whenever there are sudden and urgent payments to be made and what we have inside our wallet is a lone Aguinaldo. 6 Search for your safe space. Comfort rooms in the most inconvenient of times are my best friends. During seminars or even group hangouts, low key checking or searching for the venue’s safe space is what I usually do. Sadly, not all public toilets in the country have a bidet shower (or even the reliable classic tabo) and cleaning up sans water is really unacceptable. Nonetheless, my own version of essentials—wipes, alcohol, and tissue—has a special place in my knapsack; my closest friends know that. 7 Mint candies are what I meant. Since dealing and conversing with different people is a must considering our field of work, I always see to it that I have mint candies or chewing gum to pop in. Imagine having sisig as lunch, hours before a face-to-face interview with one of the higher-ups of the University. We only have one chance to build a good impression and we want others to remember our confidence, not our breath, don’t you? 78

FEATURES 8 Be mindful of landmarks and street signs. Unfamiliar places are a familiar sight for campus writers who are looking for unique and in-depth stories. Hence, it is important to be observant along the way and try to take note of certain landmarks, street signs, or even prominent establishments that will help you remember the route easily in case you get lost or whatever. Of course, keep an eye on your valuables. 9 Most importantly, enjoy. Amidst all the honks and horns in that probably rough and stressful ride, never forget to enjoy the twists and turns of your journey. Get along with folks and hear their stories. Be more involved and engaged through sharing your stories, too. I guess you want to update your Instagram feed with a selfie or snaps of a breath-taking scenery. Memories are at their best when shared with your loved ones. These tips might help you one way or another, or even not at all. But here’s the tea: no one wants to get up and leave their houses unprepared. While it’s true that surviving a semester or two is a race against time, we are still the ones who are in control of how to stay in hustle while being hassle-free. ● 79

FEATURES Backstage Stories OF UNIVERSITY WORKERS WORDS BY: DOROTHY LIZZETTE F. ABELEDA PHOTOS BY: JOHN LESTER B. PIOL 80

FEATURES The working staff of the University remains steadfast towards delivering and providing quality service for the Red Spartan community. Hours devoted to work and tireless efforts that presumably go unacknowledged are what kept the four corners of our institution up and running on moments we enter through turnstiles until we leave our classrooms. They are the personnel behind the daily transactions we often choose to ignore. But no matter how big or small their office holds, whether we only know them by their faces or not, it is only rightful to offer them the limelight they deserve. 81

FEATURES Debunking the major misconceptions on students’ majors WORDS and ARTWORKS BY: DANIEL D. DE CASTRO Despite upholding mutual respect as one of the core values of the University, it’s a typical experience along the corridors and inside our classrooms to hear unrealistic expectations (and sometimes demeaning stereotypes) about our chosen programs. While it is absurd to argue that one is more difficult than the other, it is a sad reality that is happening. Herewith, we asked some of our fellow Red Spartans to share the common misconceptions they hear about their majors and their personal stand on such. General rule: Do not assume that you entirely know a person based only on his major because you haven’t been in his shoes in the first place. 84

FEATURES Someone Great Behind WORDS BY: JACOB A. ESGUERRA | PHOTOS BY: JOHN LESTER B. PIOL Darna has Ding. Spiderman has Alpha. Batman has Robin. Behind these superheroes are equally great sidekicks who support and help them in order to fulfill their missions. But sidekicks are not just for our comic superheroes, even modern-day superheroes have them. Just like how jeepney drivers, who make sure that we will safely reach our destination, are assisted by their sidekicks— the barkers. Like other sidekicks, barkers are very dependable and have superpowers of their own. They have super voices, so resounding that it can be heard even from a hundred feet away. They have super endurance which helps them withstand extreme weather. They also have super strength which enables them to help carry a passenger’s baggage. They do all of these things in exchange for some coins, the sum of which, they hope would be enough to get through the day. For these reasons, barkers—the modern-day sidekicks—deserve the spotlight, too. 88

FEATURES AINO PAOR: THE BARKER WHO CAN’T SPEAK Despite being deaf-mute, Aino who was famously tagged as “Apaw” by his colleagues, works as a barker for already five years. “Maingay naman iyan at masayahin kahit ganyan,” added Aile Paor, Aino’s mother. This 30-year-old barker from San Pedro, Bauan, Batangas is the eldest among eight siblings. According to Nanay Aile, Aino went schooling but only until first grade and due to financial matters, she was not able to send Aino to a school for people with special needs. Despite this, Aino grew up as a responsible person and didn’t neglect his duty to support his family as the eldest son. “Masaya ako kahit ganyan siya kasi malaki ang naitutulong niyan sa amin. Siya minsan ang bumibili ng groceries, ganoon. Minsan, binibigyan din niyan ng baon ang mga kapatid niya,” Nanay Aile shared. Edwin Cabungcal, a friend of Aino shared how persevering and committed Aino is in his craft as a jeepney barker. “Para namang hindi iyan iba dahil masayahin at saka maingay, pati masipag iyang pumasok. Lunes hanggang Linggo walang palya. Kahit tag-ulan, makikita mo iyan dito [Mabini Terminal]”. People might think it is ironic how a deaf-mute person performs the job of calling passengers. Nonetheless, nothing is impossible for a man like Aino, who continues to fulfill his work for his family. Masaya ako kahit ganyan siya kasi malaki ang naitutulong niyan sa amin. FEATURES SAMGYEOPSAL ERA: ON THE GRILLS WORDS BY: CINDY B. EVANGELISTA and XAVIER M. TOMAS PHOTOS BY: JAYSON D. BINAY In a scale of one to “Filipino,” how many bulos can you get? We are unquestionably indulgent on food any time of the day. No matter how tiresome our load gets, we will always come home to that holy bowl of rice. Pinoys like going to food chains offering a substantial amount of meat, fish, or another protein source matched with an unlimited amount of this legendary staple as a promo. Your appetite is your only limit. This has earned the well-known tagline “Kapag tumingin ka, kanin pa.” But as time moves forward, our food cravings transition towards multiphasic food ventures and fads. We have witnessed drifts on what’s up and hot with burger and fries, the dilemma between thick or thin-crust pizzas, the rise of milk teas, and all the fresh and sometimes quirky eats the food avenue has to offer in the past years. This year, it’s time to shed light on what’s grillin’, because it’s the era of Samgyeopsal. The term literally translates to “three-layered flesh” denoted by the visible layer of pork dish. In Korea, it is usually eaten at dinner, but if you are a Filipino, time may be only secondary to your appetite. Here are some spots in Batangas that serve these meatilicious bundles: 93
