b) Wearing thin 18 2 For many years, people have criticised the fashion industry for promoting the idea that women must be thin to be beautiful. However, their complaints have fallen on deaf 10 ears. Fashion designers continue to use ultra-thin models to display their clothes because they think skinny models’ gaunt frames make clothes look better. Unfortunately, this means that many clothes are designed to suit unnaturally thin body shapes, causing many normal-sized women to feel that they are too fat to be fashionable. Critics believe that this effect on women’s self esteem can lead to increased risk of eating 15 disorders and unhealthy weight loss. 3 To make things worse, the message that thin equals beautiful is not limited to fashion shows. It is being constantly reinforced by the media. Every day, women are exposed to thousands of advertisements featuring skinny fashion models and messages about the importance of losing weight so as to appear more attractive. In addition, many 20 clothing shops and boutiques only display the smallest sizes, and do not stock larger sizes. What’s more, the sizes that they do stock are likely to run small, meaning that even a normal-sized woman may have difficulty fitting into a large-sized garment. 5 The belief that thin is beautiful is obviously very damaging to women’s mental and emotional health. It is also harmful to their physical health as it encourages unhealthy weight loss and increases the risk of developing a potentially fatal eating disorder like anorexia nervosa. The HKEDA is working hard to help Hong Kong women avoid eating 30 disorders, but its task is made much harder by the irresponsible actions of the local fashion and slimming industries.5. In paragraph 2, which phrase means ‘been ignored’? _____fallen on deaf ears____8. In paragraph 3, which word means ‘item of clothing’? ______ garment _______14. Find an adjective in paragraph 5 that means ‘causing death’? _________ fatal ________c) NET STAR OR NET VICTIM? 1 When a recent dust storm gusted down from the barren plains of northern China and deposited more than 300,000 tons of yellow sand and dust on Beijing and its inhabitants, meteorologists at the Beijing Weather Modification Office did what they have been doing for decades — they made their own rain. The storm, reportedly 5 the worst of its kind to hit the region in five years, caused health officials to advise children and people suffering from respiratory ailments to stay indoors. However, in a matter of hours after the rainmaking, the dust had cleared, the sky began to reappear above Beijing, and it was once again safe to venture outside. 5 Even though the sometimes unpredictable results of cloud-seeding have become a source of contention within China and the technology remains a debatable 45 topic among scientists around the world, Chinese meteorologists maintain that the results from cloud-seeding speak for themselves. For the 3,000-plus people employed in the rainmaking field throughout China, the technology is not ‘unclear’ or ‘questionable’. To them, the only thing that is unclear or questionable is why the rest of the world is not embracing the technology and making their own rain.1. It has a high culture that other cities lack and has more rock music than – well, all you need to say is that it has rock music. But I’ve always been a big believer that Hong Kong is so sui generis that it would overcome anything fate could throw at it. It certainly seemed unlikely that a city like Shanghai that is both literally and figuratively built on sand could overtake it in terms of its finance industry or general international standing any time soon. The fact that it has managed to rise again from the ashes of the Asian financial crisis and SARS seemed to prove the point, as did the Shanghai corruption scandal last year. Walking on the Air 1 The Grand Canyon is one of the world’s most amazing sights. Carved by the Colorado River over millions of years, the massive, steep-sided gorge runs for almost 500 kilometres through the US state of Arizona. In some places, the canyon is over 1,600 metres deep and up to 24 kilometres wide. Millions of tourists visit each year to hike, raft on the5 Colorado River or just take in the spectacular scenery. 2 The Grand Canyon Skywalk, a horseshoe-shaped walkway that extends out over the canyon’s rim, is the area’s newest tourist attraction. The skywalk is situated within the Hualapai Indian Reservation, a 160 kilometre stretch along the southern rim of the Grand Canyon. The Hualapai, a tribe of Native Americans whose name means ‘The People of the10 Pine Trees’, were behind the planning and construction of the skywalk and expect it to boost the number of visitors to the area. 3 The skywalk opened to the public on 28th March this year. The official opening ceremony took place on 20th March, and was attended by tribal leaders, developers and even former astronauts — John Herrington and Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon,15 were guests of honour. 4 Conservation groups have criticised the new attraction, fearing that the tourist traffic it brings will ruin a previously unspoilt section of the canyon. They have also voiced their concerns about the possible over-development of the area in the future. Some of the Hualapai elders believe that the skywalk should not have been built on tribal land, since this land holds20 religious significance for the tribe. On the other hand, younger members of the tribe view the skywalk as vitally important for their people. They stress the need for income from tourism to help solve the problems faced by the tribe, which include high rates of unemployment, alcoholism and poverty.1. 6 The members of the Dangerous Sports Club invented modern bungee jumping. However,35 after setting up a company to bring bungee jumping to any willing customers, A J Hackett became recognised as the founder of the sport. In 1986, Hackett made a name for himself with a highly-publicised bungee jump off Paris’s Eiffel Tower. Two years later, he established his company, which over the years has seen tens of thousands of people jump head-first off high structures all around the world. Yet, despite the terrifying nature of the sport, today’s bungee40 jumping is actually very safe. Commercial operators, like Hackett, take the safety of their clients very seriously. They follow strict safety guidelines and carefully calculate the exact length of the bungee cord required for each jumper. 7 In December 2006, Hackett opened his latest commercial bungee jump at the Macau45 Tower. When Hackett jumped from the 233-metre-high platform on the tower, he set a new world record for the highest bungee jump from a building. However, not being one to let the restrictions of building heights hold him back, Hackett is now planning to attempt the highest bungee jump ever — from a helicopter. The world-record attempt will take place above Malaysia’s capital city, Kuala Lumpur, at a height of 1,500 metres. That is twice the height of the existing record, and more50 than three and a half times higher than Two IFC, Hong Kong’s tallest building. It sounds scary, but as Hackett says, ‘Why live life on the edge when you can jump off it?’The sentences below are possible summaries for paragraphs 6 and 7 of the article.
