If kids don’t understand nature...
At a time when the nation needsto inspire our next generation ofenvironmental stewards morethan ever, we are proud to reportour 2015 accomplishments. Thanks to the support of ourvolunteers and donors, TheNature Generation is helping toprotect nature by inspiring ourfuture generations throughengaging interactive education.
We donated over 1,500 environmental books to kids this year, sothey can read for themselves about the beauty and awe of nature.Schools and hospitals that received the books, including those thatserve military families and families in need, were able to reinforce themessage of stewardship through these beautifully illustrated andwritten stories. In addition, more than 3,000 students read eco-books for our Growing Green Reader Challenge contest where thewinners won Kindles! After reading about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in our Green Earth Book Award winning book “Plastics Ahoy,” this 5th grader from a school in Washington, D.C. writes how he plans to help the environment.
When authors accept our awards, they also visit local classrooms to read and donate their books. They leave lasting impressions on the students as they tell their stories aboutcaring for the earth. Pictured here is 2015 Picture Bookwinner Nicola Davies, who tells the kids what happens when her protagonistdiscovers she held a bag of acorns: “I held a forest in my arms, and myheart was changed.” During our Green Earth Book Award ceremony , keynote speaker Bob Deans, Director of Strategic Devel- opment with the Natural Resources Defense Council, celebrated The Nature Generation as the modern storytellers of the earth. It is here where we honor and encourage the authors who are writing the books that inspire our youth to take action. In our 11 years of bestowing award, we’ve recognized and supported 42 winning books and 76 honor books that teach kids the message of environmental stewardship.
