Colonel Ralph Sneyd (1863 - 1949) was the last of the Sneyd family to reside at Keele Hall, now the location of Keele University. The estate was originally given to the Knights Templars by King Henry II in 1170, but reverted to the Crown upon the dissolution of the Order in the early 14th Century. The Sneyd family, successful drapers and merchants from Chester, bought the estate from the Crown in 1540, moved onto the estate in 1544 and the first Keele Hall was built in 1580. In 1890, the estate fell to Ralph Sneyd. ‘Sporting Ralph’ was a keen sportsman, yachtsman, serial husband (3 times, with an expensive divorce shortly afterwards), horse breeder and racer. Outside of sporting pursuits though, his interests were less concerned with the Hall or the family businesses and by his death in 1949 most of the family wealth was lost and its property sold. Whilst serving as a Colonel in the Staffordshire Yeomanry, some sources have Sneyd linked to the arrest of the notorious Dutch exotic dancer and courtesan Margaretha Zelle, better known by her stage name ‘Mata Hari’ during the Great War. Hari was accused of spying for the Germans and that the repercussions of secrets revealed by her caused the deaths of at least 50,000 men. In a somewhat controversial closed trial she was found guilty and executed by firing squad on the 15th October 1917. Hari was exculpated by Germany in 1930 and later research would indicate her to be more likely the victim of her own naiveté and the manipulation of various security and political agencies than a genuinely effective espionage agent. 113

IN THE GUNROOMLOT 525 – THOMAS BOSS PERCUSSION BALL AND SHOT GUN By Donald DallasWhen it arrived on the Holts premises, I was immediately struck patchbox as Captain Ponsonby would have been either very braveby its condition. For a percussion gun built in 1854, this Thomas or foolhardy to go anywhere near a lion with a 15 bore ball gun!Boss gun was in excellent original condition. The stock was crisp, I think it is quite interesting that Captain Ponsonby had his namethere were traces of colour hardening upon the locks and the and regiment engraved on the under rib. It was quite commonwhole gun looked like it had seen very little use. for an officer serving abroad in India or Africa to take sporting guns and rifles with them in pursuit of the wide variety of sportHowever when I picked it up I was struck by how heavy it was, far available. Very popular was the combination gun, one barrelheavier than you would expect from a normal percussion rifled and the other barrel smooth to cope with all eventualities.gun. Then I spotted a patch box in the butt – unusual – then I This 15 bore ball and shot gun could fit into this category ifspotted a rear sight on the top rib – unusual. I glanced at the bore Captain Ponsonby decided to take it abroad whilst on active– smooth bore – and for a few moments I was confused. What service hence the engraving on the under rib.was it? Due to its remarkable original condition it was more likely used at his home in Gloucestershire both as a game gun and as a deerThe one factor that makes a Boss gun stand out from all their rifle in the parkland upon his estate. It is a wonderful item andcontemporaries is their consistent quality. From Thomas Boss’s has a little bit of star quality as it is so rare and desirable.early ventures in the 1820s right up to the present day withoutexception, Boss have built one class of gun only, the best. Theirmotto “builder of best guns only” is entirely apt. This gun, no. 1360, a 15 bore percussion gun is of the usual Bossquality coming out of the workshop at 73 St James’s Street in theyear 1854. But what is it? I looked up the Boss records regardingthe gun and they were quite confusing as they were rambling andincluded a lot of details about the original buyer trading in a pairof Mantons and so on. But amongst this were the details of thisgun. It was described as a “heavy gun” and the patch box, rearsight and sling swivels were all mentioned. This gun was built tothe order of Captain The Hon’ble Ashley Ponsonby of theGrenadier Guards and is engraved as such on the under rib.Thomas Boss specialised in percussion shotguns and they madeup the bulk of his production. He did build single and double riflesas well but they are quite rare with only 31 percussion rifles beingrecorded. This gun no. 1360 is not a double rifle as it has no rifling but isalso not a shotgun as it has substantial barrels, a back sight, apatchbox and sling swivels. What it is, and this makes it evenrarer than Thomas Boss percussion rifles, is a Thomas Boss balland shot gun. I have never come across another Boss percussionball and shot gun hence lot 525 is an extremely rare item.A ball and shot gun means that the gun could be used as a Thomas Boss’s premises at 73 St James’s Street, conventional shotgun but in addition, the slightly more London where no. 1360 was built.substantial barrels could fire solid ball as well. As a ball gun therange was relatively short as is evidenced by the 100yd. rearsight. They were primarily used in this capacity as park rifles forshooting deer at close range in enclosed parkland. The barrelsare shorter than normal at 28” and this was designed not only topare down weight but to bring them on to a moving target quickly. The patchbox was necessary in the butt as the balls werewrapped in cloth patches soaked in wax for lubricant. I did smilewhen I saw the beautiful Sumner engraving of a lion on the 143

A very rare Thomas Boss percussion ball and shot gun no. 1360 built in 1854. Lot 525 in this sale.144
