Weston-Simons saw action in North Africa in WWII, leading a squadron of tanks against the Germans. His tank was hit by enemy fire and he sustained serious leg injuries, which left him with a significant disability. After the war his military career continued, but mainly in diplomatic postings. He saw service in Germany, Norway, Jordan, Italy and Northern Ireland. His final posting was as Defence Attache to the British Embassy in Beijing, which was closed during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Weston-Simons was part of the team which re-opened the embassy. He passed away in Beijing at his post in 1974, and this gun was then held in storage in Edinburgh until 1985 when it was given to Col. Weston-Simons’ son-in-law and was taken to Australia. 315
