Around Our Temple 3 Message from our new Director of Education Happy Anniversary Shalom to my new Temple Emanu-El family. I am March thrilled and honored to join you and deeply appreciate Anniversaries the kindest of welcomes each of the lay and professional leaders have bestowed upon me during my interview David & Caleigh Alevy process. The warmth of this community made us feel Hilton & Robin Berger at home; my husband Yaacov and I realized that we Samuel & Emily Friedman want to be part of the Birmingham Jewish Community. Phillip & Joye Madden Being part of any community means caring to know Eric & Amy Morrison each other’s stories. As I look forward to hearing each of your stories and Colter & Carlie Somerville connecting with you, I will start with briefly sharing my story. Chris & Sydney Walker My love of Torah and pride in being Jewish were instilled in me by my parents. I was born in India and my family made Aliyah to Israel when I was A Special Thank You 11 years old. I grew up in Israel, served in the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) and graduated with a BA from Haifa University along with a teaching degree. to congregants Marilynn & Earl I arrived as a graduate student in the United States with my husband Rothstein for hosting our and toddler son. Seeking the local Jewish community on campus led to an Newcomer Happy Hour on offer to teach religious school. I loved teaching my religious school students and sharing my passion for Judaism with them. Seeing their eyes light up March 1 and Jan & Ron Hirsch as they learned about their own Jewish history, traditions, and values, for hosting our Newcomer made me realize that this was what I was meant to do. The transition Brunch on March 6! from being a secular teacher in Israel to a Jewish educational leader in America was meaningful and exciting, making me want to learn and grow Marilynn & Jan are co-chairing as a professional Jewish educator. I have been a professional Jewish our newcomer events. These two educator for over twenty years serving large and mid-size congregations. My most meaningful educational journey earned me a master’s degree in events were geared toward Religious Education from Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion. our new and returning members In my sacred work, as your Director of Education, I plan to build on the strong and meaningful curriculum that has been put in place by my as of January 2019 as a way colleague Lynda Gutcheon, as well as create opportunities for connection to welcome them and connect and bonding among our students of all ages. I believe that creating a them with other congregants! sense of community in each classroom, school, and synagogue-wide, alongside a creative, dynamic, and inspiring curriculum, leads to meaningful Jewish living. My work cannot exist in a vacuum. Partnering with our clergy, professional and lay leaders, teachers, students, and parents will ensure a shared vision and common goals while meeting the specific needs of each individual family. I would love to hear your family story and what suits your family’s needs for Jewish learning and growth. I look forward to meeting you very soon. Finally, I count my blessings. I am thankful to be joining such a warm and wonderful community at Temple Emanu-El. I feel blessed to be married to the love of my life – Yaacov for over thirty years and to have two adult children that amaze and inspire me every day.
