After the chanting of the Torah ‫אחר הקריאה יברך‬ Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu, ‫ ֶמ ֶלְך‬,‫ָּברּוְך ַא ָּתה יהוה ֱאֹל ֵהינּו‬ Melech ha-olam, asher natan ,‫ ֲא ֶׁשר ָנ ַתן ָלנּו ּתֹו ַרת ֱא ֶמת‬,‫ָהעֹו ָלם‬ lanu Torat emet, v’chayei olam nata b’tocheinu. Baruch Atah .‫ְו ַחֵּיי עֹו ָלם ָנ ַטע ְּבתֹו ֵכנּו‬ Adonai, notein haTorah. .‫ נֹו ֵתן ַהּתֹו ָרה‬,‫ָּברּוְך ַא ָּתה יהוה‬ Blessed are You Lord/‫ יהוה‬our God, Ruler of the universe, who gave us the Torah of truth and implanted eternal life within us. V’zot HaTorah: As We Lift the Torah ‫וזאת התורה‬ V’zot haTorah asher sam ‫ְוזֹאת ַהּתֹו ָרה ֲא ֶׁשר ָׂשם מ ֶׁשה ִל ְפ ֵני‬ Mosheh lifnei b’nei Yisra-eil, .‫ ַעל ִּפי יהוה ְּב ַיד מ ֶׁשה‬,‫ְּב ֵני ִיְׂש ָר ֵאל‬ al pi Adonai b’yad Mosheh. This is the Torah that Moses placed before the children of Israel upon God’s command, through Moses’ hand. 93

Gladden us, Lord/‫ יהוה‬our God with Elijah the prophet, Your servant; the sovereign house of David, Your anointed. May he come speedily and cause our heart to exult. Let no stranger sit on his throne, let not others continue to inherit his honor. You swore to him by Your holy name that his lamp will never be extinguished. Al hakol Adonai Eloheinu, anachnu modim lach, umvarchim otach, yitbarach shimcha b’fi kol chai tamid l’olam va-ed. Baruch Atah Adonai, m’kadeish haShabbat. For the Torah and for the prayer service, for the prophets and for this Sabbath day that You, Lord/‫ יהוה‬our God, have given us for holiness and rest, for honor and glory: for all this, Lord/‫ יהוה‬our God we gratefully thank You and bless You. Returning the Torah to the Ark Y’hal’lu et sheim Adonai, ,‫ְי ַה ְללּו ֶאת ֵׁשם יהוה‬ ki nisgav shmo l’vado. .‫ִּכי ִנְׂש ָּגב ְׁשמֹו ְל ַבּדֹו‬ Let us praise the divine name, for this name alone is exalted. Hodo Al Eretz: All the Earth Gives Thanks ‫הודו על ארץ‬ Hodo al eretz v’shamayim. ‫ ַו ָּי ֶרם‬.‫הֹודֹו ַעל ֶא ֶרץ ְו ָׁש ָמ ִים‬ Vayarem keren l’amo, ‫ ְּת ִה ָּלה ְל ָכל‬,‫ֶק ֶרן ְל ַעּמֹו‬ t’hilah l’chol chasidav, livnei Yisra-eil am k’rovo, ‫ ִל ְב ֵני ִיְׂש ָר ֵאל ַעם‬,‫ֲח ִסי ָדיו‬ hal’luYah. .‫ ַה ְללּו ָיּה‬,‫ְקרֹבֹו‬ God’s splendor covers heaven and earth. God has exalted the horn for God’s people, for the glory of all the faithful ones, the beloved people, the children of Israel. Halleluyah! Psalm 148:13-14 God’s teaching is perfect, renewing life; God’s decrees are enduring, making wise the simple. God’s precepts are just, rejoicing the heart; God’s instruction is lucid, making the eyes light up. Eitz Chayim: It is a Tree of Life ‫עץ חיים‬ Eitz chayim hi lamachazikim ,‫ֵעץ ַח ִּיים ִהיא ַל ַּמ ֲח ִזי ִקים ָּבּה‬ bah, v’tomcheha m’ushar. ‫ ְּד ָר ֶכי ָה ַד ְר ֵכי‬.‫ְו ֹת ְמ ֶכי ָה ְמ ֻאׁ ְָּשר‬ D’racheha darchei no-am, v’chol n’tivoteha shalom. .‫ ְו ָכל ְנ ִתיבֹו ֶתי ָה ָׁשלֹום‬,‫נֹ ַעם‬ Hashiveinu Adonai eilecha ,‫ֲה ִׁשי ֵבנּו יהוה ֵא ֶליָך ְו ָנׁשּו ָבה‬ v’nashuvah, chadeish yameinu k’kedem. .‫ַחֵּדׁש ָי ֵמינּו ְּכ ֶק ֶדם‬ It is a tree of life to those who hold it fast, and all who support Torah are happy. Her ways are pleasant and her paths lead to peace. Return us Lord/‫ יהוה‬to You, that we may return. Renew our days as of old. Proverbs 3:17-18 98

The Eternal’s place of glory is in the heavens above, and the dwelling of God’s strength is in the lofty heights. The Lord/‫ יהוה‬is our God, there is none else. This truth is our power, none can compare. Ki hamalchut shel’cha hi ul-olmei ad timloch b’chavod, kakatuv b’Toratecha: Adonai yimloch l’olam va-ed. 100

We will place our hope in You Lord/‫ יהוה‬our God, to quickly see the splendor of Your might--to remove idolatry from our world so that false gods will surely perish. You will repair the world with divine rule, and all flesh will call upon Your name, and You will turn all the earth’s evil toward You. Then will all the inhabitants of our earth openly acknowledge that to You every knee will bend and every tongue will swear loyalty. To You Lord/‫ יהוה‬our God, let them bow low, and to Your glorious name let them give honor. Let all accept Your sovereign obligation, so that speedily You will ever rule over them. For this realm is Yours, and forever You will reign in glory, as it is written in Your Torah: “The Lord/‫ יהוה‬will reign for ever and ever!” Exodus 15:18 V’ne-emar: v’hayah Adonai ‫ ְו ָה ָיה יהוה ְל ֶמ ֶלְך ַעל ָּכל‬:‫ְו ֶנ ֱא ַמר‬ l’melech al kol ha-aretz; bayom ‫ָה ָא ֶרץ; ַּבּיֹום ַההּוא ִי ְה ֶיה יהוה‬ hahu yi-h’yeh Adonai Echad .‫ֶא ָחד ּוׁ ְשמֹו ֶא ָחד‬ ushmo Echad. We remember these, our beloved, not to be sad, but to remember. Our sorrow that accompanies their death does not diminish the joyful gift that was their lives. We remember their kindness and their nobility and their goodness. They taught us to live and love, inspiring us through the grace of their best selves. Al hanisim, v’al hapurkan, v’al hag’vurot, v’al hat’shu-ot, v’al hamilchamot, she-asita la-avoteinu bayamim haheim baz’man hazeh. Bimei Matityahu ben Yochanan kohein gadol chashmonai uvanav, k’she-amdah malchut yavan al amcha Yisra-eil, l’hashkicham Toratecha, ulha-aviram meichukei r’tzonecha. V’Atah b’rachamecha harabim, amad’ta lahem b’eit tzaratam. We thank you for the miracles, for the salvation, for the mighty deeds, and for the battles and victories that You performed for our ancestors in those days and in our own time. In the days of Mattathias son of Yohanan, the Hasmonean high priest, and in the days of his sons, a cruel power rose against Israel, demanding that they abandon Your Torah and violate Your mitzvot. In Your great mercy, You stood by Your people in time of trouble. You defended them, vindicated them and brought vengeance against those who wronged them. You delivered the strong into the hands of the weak, the many into the hands of the few, the corrupt into the hands of the pure of heart and the guilty into the hands of the innocent. You delivered the arrogant into the hands of those who were faithful to your Torah. You have brought great victories and miraculous deliverance for Your people Israel, revealing Your glory and Your holiness to all the world. Then Your children entered into the Holy of Holies, cleansed Your Temple, purified Your sanctuary, and then kindled lights in Your sacred precincts. They set aside these eight days as the days of Chanukah, a season for thanksgiving and reciting praises to Your great name. 127

Prayer for our Congregation: May the God who blessed our ancestors in every generation bless this holy congregation. Watch over its leaders. Give us wisdom and guide us to act for the welfare of Your Torah and Your people. Bless those who dedicate themselves to its welfare. May they be rewarded for their generosity and kindness. Imbue us with Your love for our people. May we ever reach out to help those in need, and may Your Torah and mitzvot guide us. Remove from us sickness and strife, and may we be forgiven our sins. Open our hearts to be kind and loving to our fellow congregants, and help us bring the blessings of Your love and Your Torah to all those in need. As you have blessed those who came before us, bless us and our children. And we say together: amen. 128

Prayer for the United States of America: Our God and God of our ancestors, we ask Your blessings for the United States of America, for its government, for the office of our president and its advisors and its counselors. We pray for our congress, our governor, our legislators, and for all who tend to the welfare of our community. Bless them with strength and compassion. Help them to be wise in all their deliberations and just in all of their dealings. Guide, too, the fortunes of our land. Protect us. May we and our children dwell in safety and security. May all the inhabitants of our land live in freedom from fear and freedom from want. Broaden our spirits so we might live in accordance with the highest principles of our land. Blot out bigotry and hatred, and help us to work together in concord to advance Your will. May our country be a beacon of justice and freedom to the oppressed of our world. Guard us today and tomorrow, and bestow Your providence upon all of our fellow citizens. And we say together: amen. Master of the universe, who reigned before any form was created, at the time when God’s will brought all into being--then as King was His name proclaimed. After all has ceased to be, the Lord/‫יהוה‬, the awesome One, will reign alone. It is the Lord/‫ יהוה‬who was, the Lord/‫ יהוה‬who is and the Lord/‫ יהוה‬who shall remain in splendor. The Lord/‫ יהוה‬is One, there is no second to compare, to declare as God’s equal. Without beginning, without conclusion, the Lord/‫ יהוה‬is the power and dominion. He is the Lord/‫יהוה‬, my living Redeemer, Rock of my pain in time of distress. He is my banner, a refuge for me, the portion in my cup on the day I call. Into God’s hand I shall entrust my spirit when I go to sleep, and I shall awaken! With my spirit shall my body remain. The Lord/‫ יהוה‬is with me, I shall not fear. 133

You commanded precepts at the assemblage at Mount Sinai, the Sabbath and festivals to keep through all my years; to prepare before me courses and banquets--Sabbath of rest. Chem-dat ha-l’va-vot l’u-mah shvu-rah, ,‫ֶח ְמַּדת ַהְּל ָבבֹות ְל ֻא ָּמה ְׁשבּו ָרה‬ Lin-fa-shot nich-a-vot n’sha-mah y’tei-rah, L’ne-fesh m’tzei-rah ta-sir a-na-chah, ,‫ִל ְנ ָפׁשֹות ִנ ְכ ָאבֹות ְנָׁש ָמה ְי ֵת ָרה‬ Sha-bat m’nu-chah. ,‫ְל ֶנ ֶפׁש ְמ ֵצ ָרה ָּת ִסיר ֲא ָנ ָחה‬ .‫ַׁש ָּבת ְמנּו ָחה‬ Hearts’ beloved of the shattered nation, for suffering people an additional soul; for a troubled soul it removes moaning--Sabbath of rest. 136

Od lo ‫ עֹוד ֹלא ָא ְב ָדה‬.‫ַע ִין ְל ִצּיֹון צֹו ִפ ָּיה‬ av-dah tik-va-tei-nu, ha-tik-vah ‫ ַהִּת ְק ָוה ַּבת ְׁשנֹות‬,‫ִת ְק ָו ֵתנּו‬ bat shnot al-pa-yim, ,‫ַא ְל ַּפ ִים‬ li-h’yot am chof-shi b’ar-tzei-nu, b’e-retz Tzi-yon vi-ru-sha-la-yim. ‫ ְּב ֶא ֶרץ‬,‫ִל ְהיֹות ַעם ָח ְפׁ ִשי ְּב ַא ְר ֵצנּו‬ .‫ִצּיֹון ִוירּו ָׁש ַל ִים‬ So long as still within the inmost heart a Jewish spirit sings, so long as the eye looks eastward gazing toward Zion, our hope is not lost-- the hope of two thousand years: to be a free people in our land, the land of Zion and Jerusalem. 12. Ashreinu ‫אשרינו‬ Ash-rei-nu. Ma-oz Tzur/Rock of Ages ‫מעוז צור‬ Ma-oz tzur y’shu-ati l’cha na-eh ,‫ָמעֹוז צּור ְיׁשּו ָע ִתי ְלָך ָנ ֶאה ְל ַׁש ֵּב ַח‬ l’sha-bei-ach, ,‫ִּתּכֹון ֵּבית ְּת ִפ ָּל ִתי ְו ָׁשם ּתֹו ָדה ְנ ַז ֵּב ַח‬ ti-kon beit t’fi-la-ti v’sham to-dah n’za-bei-ach, ,‫ְל ֵעת ָּת ִכין ַמ ְט ֵּב ַח ִמָּצר ַה ְמ ַנ ֵּב ַח‬ l’eit ta-chin mat-bei-ach mi-tzar .‫ָאז ֶא ְגמֹר ְּב ִׁשיר ִמ ְזמֹור ֲח ֻנַּכת ַה ִּמ ְז ֵּב ַח‬ ham-na-bei-ach, az eg-mor b’shir miz-mor cha-nu-kat ha-miz-bei-ach. Rock of ages let our song praise Your saving power; You, amid the raging foes were our sheltering tower. Furious, they assailed us, but Your arm availed us, and Your word broke their sword when our own strength failed us. 14. Adir Hu/God of Might ‫אדיר הוא‬ A-dir Hu. Al Shloshah D’varim ‫על שלשה דברים‬ Al shlo-shah d’va-rim ha-o-lam o-meid: :‫ַעל ְׁשל ָׁשה ְד ָב ִרים ָהעֹו ָלם עֹו ֵמד‬ Al ha-To-rah, v’al ha-a-vo-dah, v’al g’mi-lut cha-sa-dim. ,‫ ְו ַעל ָה ֲעבֹו ָדה‬,‫ַעל ַהּתֹו ָרה‬ .‫ְו ַעל ְּג ִמילּות ֲח ָס ִדים‬ Upon three things the world stands: upon Torah, upon worship and upon acts of loving-kindness. 141
