And it has been said: And the Lord/‫ יהוה‬shall be Sovereign over all the earth; on that day there shall be one God with one name. Zechariah 14:9 We remember these, our beloved, not to be sad, but to remember. Our sorrow that accompanies their death does not diminish the joyful gift that was their lives. We remember their kindness and their nobility and their goodness. They taught us to live and love, inspiring us through the grace of their best selves. They have showered us with love and light, and as we remember them in our Kaddish, we bring their light back, to raise up our heavy hearts. These we remember... Rabbi Jonathan Miller 43

A Psalm. A song for the Sabbath Day. It is good to praise the eternal God, to sing hymns to Your name, O Most High. To proclaim Your steadfast love at daybreak, Your faithfulness each night with a ten-stringed harp, with voice and lyre together. You have gladdened me by Your deeds, eternal God; I shout for joy at Your handiwork. How great are Your works O God, how very subtle Your designs! A brutish man cannot know, a fool cannot understand this: though the wicked sprout like grass, though all evildoers blossom, it is only that they may be destroyed forever. But You are exalted eternal One, for all time. Surely Your enemies, O God, surely Your enemies perish; all evildoers are scattered. You raise my horn high like that of a wild ox; I am soaked in freshening oil. I shall see the defeat of my watchful foes, hear of the downfall of the wicked who beset me. The righteous bloom like a date-palm; they thrive like a cedar in Lebanon. Planted in the house of the eternal One, they flourish in the courts of our God. In old age they still produce fruit; they are full of sap and freshness, attesting that the Lord/‫ יהוה‬is upright, my Rock in whom there is no wrong. Psalm 92 48

La-asok B’divrei Torah: We are Commanded to Study Torah ‫לעסוק בדברי תורה‬ Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu, ‫ ֶמ ֶלְך‬,‫ָּברּוְך ַאָּתה יהוה ֱאֹל ֵהינּו‬ Melech ha-olam, asher kid’shanu ,‫ ֲא ֶׁשר ִקְּד ָׁשנּו ְּב ִמ ְצֹו ָתיו‬,‫ָהעֹו ָלם‬ b’mitzvotav, v’tzivanu la-asok b’divrei Torah. .‫ְו ִצ ָּונּו ַל ֲעסֹוק ְּב ִד ְב ֵרי תֹו ָרה‬ Blessed are You Lord/‫ יהוה‬our God, Ruler of the universe, who makes us holy through divine commandments, and who commands us to engage in the study of Torah. These are the things that have no measure: Leaving the corners of the field for the poor, the offering of the first fruits to the priests, making pilgrimage to Jerusalem, acts of kindness, and the study of the Torah. These are things the bounty of which one consumes in this world, while the principle remains for us in the world to come: Honoring father and mother, acts of kindness, supporting the house of study, providing hospitality, visiting the sick, rejoicing with bride and groom, burying the dead, praying with intent, and bringing peace between two people. And the study of Torah is equal to them all. 51

Blessed is the One who spoke, and the world came to be. Blessed is the One, source of creation. Blessed is the One whose speech becomes deed. Blessed is the One who decrees, and it comes to pass. Blessed is the One who has mercy over the earth. Blessed is the One who bestows goodness on the God-fearing. Blessed is the One who lives and endures forever. Blessed is the One who delivers and rescues. Blessed is God’s name. With songs of praise we will exalt, praise and glorify You; and we will proclaim Your sovereignty, our Ruler and our God, the only One, eternal and glorified, to the end of time. David’s Psalm of Praise: I will extol You my sovereign God, I will bless Your name forevermore. Each day I will bless You, I will praise Your name forevermore. Great is God, abundant in praise, whose greatness is beyond compare. Each generation will extol Your deeds and will tell of Your mighty acts. I will tell of Your resplendent glory and Your mighty acts. I will speak of Your mighty acts and recount Your greatness, remembering always Your great goodness and singing of Your righteousness. Gracious and merciful is God, long suffering, abundant in loving- kindness. God is good to all and merciful to all creation. All Your works will praise You and Your righteous ones will bless You. They will tell of Your sovereign glory and speak of Your greatness, to declare Your mighty power, the resplendent glory of Your reign. You reign over the entire universe, Your dominion extends throughout the generations. God upholds all who falter and supports all those bowed low. All eyes look to You for sustenance, and You give them their bread in due time. You open Your hand and provide every thing its desire. Righteous are God’s ways, ever faithful to all God’s creatures, God comes near whenever called upon, to anyone who calls upon God with truth, fulfilling the desires of the upright, harkening to their pleas and rescuing them. God protects all God’s beloved and destroys the wicked. May my mouth utter God’s praise, and may all flesh bless God’s holy name forevermore. And we will bless God now through all eternity, halleluyah! Psalm 14 61

True and upstanding, beloved and precious, awesome and powerful, good and beautiful is this eternal word for us. In truth, the God of the universe is our Ruler, the Rock of Jacob is our protecting shield. Throughout the generations, God is established and God’s name is established. God’s words endure forever, faithful and precious through all eternity. You have redeemed us from Egypt, Eternal our God, and rescued us from the house of bondage. For this, Your beloved people praised You and exalted You as God, singing songs of praise, blessings and thanks. The sovereign ever-living God is exalted and awesome, humbles the proud and raises the lowly, frees the captive, rescues the humble, helps the poor, and answers the people when they cry out. All blessings to God most high! Moses and all Israel sang together this song of rejoicing: 71

‫סדר קריאת התורה‬ For the Reading of Torah For a Bar or Bat Mitzvah: In this holy sanctuary, you join together with generations of young Jewish men and women who stood to receive the Torah for the first time. Your ancestors celebrated their Jewish heritage by studying Torah and living by its precepts. They treasured it and passed it on to their children. We pray that you will live a life reflecting the holiness contained in the pages and words of Torah and be a blessing to our community and to our God. 88
