6 Around Our Temple UPCOMING EVENTS Violet Watson May 3 Lester Siegel Scholarship Award Winner Last Day of Hebrew School Violet is a 5th grader in our Religious School May 4 and is so excited to be going to Jacob’s Camp for her second summer, where she knows this Kesher End of Year Party will reinforce her Jewish values and at Urban Air instill pride in our shared Jewish heritage at 5:30 pm and traditions. Violet is an active member of our Youth Choir and has Adult Ed - Judaism in Art: volunteered with Family Promise. She volunteers with Team Kick Images of Prejudice & Pride Cancer, which is a program that teaches soccer to children with special needs while raising money for cancer research at UAB. at 6:00 pm Violet is active in Girl Scouts and has helped design and build Buddy Benches for two elementary school playgrounds. Buddy Benches May 5 help kids find friends at school, so they don’t feel lonely. Around Our Temple 7 BAT MITZVAH May 19 Millie Blair Annual Meeting, Shabbat Service, & Dinner Saturday, May 6th at 10:00 am starting at 5:00 pm My name is Millie Blair and I am a 7th May 20 grader at Mountain Brook Junior High. I was born in Jacksonville, FL and Confirmation moved to Birmingham when I was at 10:00 am 3 years old. My parents are Alyssa and Bradley Blair and I have two little May 25 sisters – Charlotte (10) and Goldie (7). I am lucky to have all my grandparents, Erev Shavuot – Elyse & Ken Blair and Rhonda & Harry Weinberg living in Birmingham. Book of Ruth Text Study I am so thrilled to become a Bat Mitzvah on May 6! I follow in the footsteps of my mother, great-grandmother, uncle, and cousins who have been a with Rabbi Wright Bar or Bat Mitzvah at Temple Emanu-El. at 6:00 pm My favorite subjects in school are Math and Science, but I’m also May 26 really starting to enjoy French. When I’m not studying for school or my Bat Mitzvah, you can usually find me on the track, soccer field or swimming Office Closed for Shavuot pool. I run cross country, track and swim for Mountain Brook Junior High and play academy soccer for AFC. During my free time, I love to travel Shavuot Shabbat Service with my family, hang out with my friends, read books, listen to music, at 6:00 pm and go shopping. May 27 During the summer, I attend Camp Barney Medintz which gives me an opportunity to be around other Jewish kids. I have been going to Camp Yizkor & Shabbat Service Barney since I was 8 years old and I am a 3rd generation Barney Medintz at 10:00 am camper. My time there has been incredibly rewarding as I’ve been able to connect with so many Jewish girls that are just like me and made May 29 me proud of my Jewish roots. Office Closed for Memorial Day I am also so thankful for the Jewish education I’ve received at Temple Emanu-El and would personally like to thank Cantor Wittner SAVE THE DATE: and Rabbi Wright for helping me throughout my Bat Mitzvah studies. I am looking forward to becoming a Bat Mitzvah on May 6 and can’t wait June 3 to celebrate this simcha with my family and friends!
