STUDENT NEWS South Beach Miami SPRING BREAK 2023 Fort Lauderdale, Fla., –Fort Lauderdale and Miami, have gained reputa- tions for attracting large numbers of students for Spring Break. This report aims to highlight the big differences in student behavior between Fort Lauderdale Beach and Miami during spring break. South Beach was bustling with excitement this year as thousands of young vacationers flocked to the vibrant coastal para- dise. However, amidst the sun-kissed shores and pulsating nightlife, a dark un- derbelly of crime and bad behavior began to cast a shadow over the otherwise idyllic scene put Spring Break 2023 in a Declared State of Emergency As the nightfall brought an array of neon lights and thumping beats, the allure of South Beach's party scene drew in a diverse mix of revelers. Among the multi- tude of law-abiding Students, a small but noticeable contingent engaged in unru- ly behavior, fueled by excessive drinking and a disregard for the rules. Instances of petty theft and pickpocketing soared as opportunistic criminals took advantage of the crowded streets and distracted partygoers. The festive atmosphere be- came tainted by reports of stolen wallets, cell phones, and other valuables, leav- ing some visitors feeling violated and unsafe. Drunken brawls erupted sporadi- cally, fueling a sense of unease and pushing the local authorities to their limits as they tried to maintain order amidst the chaos. The police were stretched thin, at- tempting to manage the wave of incidents while still ensuring the safety of the law-abiding Spring Breakers. While most visitors were well-behaved, there was a large number engaged in more serious criminal activities. Compared to Fort Lauderdale, our city officials have implemented various suc- cessful measures to curb rowdy behavior during spring break. This includes strict regulations and increased police presence. The Broward Student Authority lends its support by setting up Spring Break HQ 23 and working with the Beach Café at the Fort Lauderdale Beach Place Main Stage. As the 2023 Beach Place Spring Break host, our MC’s used the venue for promotion of local places to go, alternative events and attractions to satisfy a different demographic of visi- tors. In the past, Fort Lauderdale's spring break was associated with excessive drinking, public intoxication, and rowdy behavior. This reputation led to increased law enforcement presence and stricter regulations, resulting in a sharp decline in extreme partying. Today, Fort Lauderdale emphasizes a more family-friendly and relaxed atmosphere, promoting outdoor activities, watersports, and cultural at- tractions. Join Nova Southeastern University to Eliminate the Use of Plastic Straws FORT LAUDERDALE/DAVIE, Fla. – Join NSU and an ever-growing list of corporations, organizations and municipalities that are taking steps to re- duce their dependency on single-use plastic. “This was something we heard about from students, faculty and staff,” said Dr. George Hanbury, President of NSU. “The time has come for NSU to take a first-step in addressing single-use plastics on our campuses. It may be a small step, but every bit helps address the bigger issue.” Dr. Hanbury hopes that by NSU taking this step, it may inspire public and private sector organizations to explore the possibility of doing so as well. While NSU has replaced plastic straws with more environmentally-friendly paper versions, the university will still have plastic straws on hand for indi- viduals with disabilities or special needs who need to use them, and they’ll be made available upon request. The fact is in most cases, straws are not needed – they aren’t the product people are purchasing, they are an accessory. You can still buy a soda or cup of iced coffee and simply drink from the cup – the straw is superfluous. For many years the outcry about plastics polluting our oceans has been heard near and far. Almost weekly there are news reports of marine crea- tures washing up on beaches that have their digestive systems clogged with plastic trash. Plastics have been found in all of the world’s oceans, in the polar ice caps and even at the deepest part of the ocean, the Marianas Trench. “Many people have said that, in the grand scheme of things, reducing straw usage is just a drop in the bucket when it comes to addressing plastic trash,” said Dr. Derek Burkholder, a marine research scientist in NSU’s Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography. “While that may be true, the fact remains that plastic straws are part of the problem, so we can start there and then see what else we can do to reduce our plastic foot- print.” Burkholder, who is also the director of the Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program and the Marine Environmental Education Center at the Carpenter House, said there are some reports that show that just in the United States and United Kingdom, nearly 550 million plastic straws are thrown away every day. In fact, approximately 50% of all plastic is single use, with an average “useful lifetime” of 12 minutes. There are simple steps that people can take to help reduce their plastic footprint. From not using plastic straws to using reusable bags when grocery shopping, each action, no matter how small, helps remove plastic trash from landfills or the ocean. Working with sea turtles, Burkholder and his colleagues have had to deal with the unfortunate reality of dead animals washing up on our beaches. And when they perform a necropsy he said that, inevitably, they find various bits of plastic in the turtle’s stomach. Burkholder said it’s not just sea turtles – plastics are find- ing their ways into all sorts of marine creatures, great and small, from plankton to sperm whales. Even shore birds are being found with significant amounts of plastics in their digestive systems. Plastic isn’t biodegradable, it simply breaks down into smaller and smaller particles, including micro plastics, that are in- gested. “If you think about it, we’re polluting ourselves,” he said. “The fish eat the plas- tics, which metabolizes in- to their fat reserves and then we catch and eat the fish. We’re throwing plas- tics into the oceans and then, sooner or later, we wind up ingesting those same plastics.”
