MARCH 2023 | VOL. 1 HIKING, HIKING AND MORE HIKING! Three of the Scouts organised hikes during the first term. Melissa and Sharvani completed their hikes for Discoverer, while Mikayla completed hers for her First Class. Mikayla Mikayla's 1st Class Hike took place on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 March at Ezembelo Nature Reserve. Not even the rainy start on Saturday morning could dampen the group's spirits as they set of for the two-day hike. Michaela was joined by Callista, Kean and Hein. During the hike the Scouts saw different species of buck. It was not only the big animals that drew their attention, but also the small ones - especially the many spiders under the beds in the overnight hut! Due to the weather, it was very misty at times, creating great photo opportunities.

MARCH 2023 | VOL. 1 On 5 March, I ran a hike at Groenkloof Nature Reserve for my Discoverer advancement. We did a 10.5 km hike, which only took us 3.5 hours to complete. We took several breaks and we saw a lot of plants and wildlife. There were many zebras, some interesting birds and various fascinating plants. The hike was really calm and relaxing but there were a lot of loose rocks and down and up hills to navigate. Andrew showed us a science experiment with Coca-Cola and Mentos, which exploded everywhere. I would highly recommend doing your discoverer hike at Groenkloof Nature Reserve, as was really fun and easy. We all enjoyed the hike! Melissa

MARCH 2023 | VOL. 1 Sharvani On 5 March, I ran my Discoverer hike at Groenkloof Nature Reserve. It was a joint hike with Melissa, making planning a lot easier. My patrol was four people in total, and the hike took us about four hours to complete. We completed the yellow trail, which was 10.5 km. The hike was very relaxed, allowing us to stop frequently for breaks. There were beautiful views and surroundings, and we spotted a few animals. We had planned on stopping for lunch at 7 km but could not find any decent shade until 8 km when we finally stopped. We also saw some zebras along the way and sat near a few while eating lunch. We were all a bit tired towards the end, but we definitely sped up once we saw the 10 km mark and finished the hike well. ~ Sharvani
MARCH 2023 | VOL. 1 Ho … ho … ho … me hearties! Our cubs Cub camp joined the Pirates Ultimate Survival Camp in March. We sailed the high seas and were washed up on shore at the pirate island, where we pitched our tents, played lots of fun games and ate worms, cockroaches and fingers in boats. Luckily no one had to walk the plank!
