This is Beatrice Campion. She was not a very nice character and was certainly not popular and now she is dead. Apparently poisoned after drinking a glass of punch at Lady Henrietta Emerald’s Murder Mystery Party. But who poisoned her drink?

Lady Henrietta Emerald had invited almost everyone in Little Puzzling to her murder mystery party. She was planning a fun evening but now there has been a real murder and she is shocked. She was once great friends with Beatrice Campion when they were both much younger.

As the butler at Puzzle Hall, Gerald Garnet was serving the punch to guests as they arrived for Lady Henrietta’s Murder Mystery Party. That means he must have handed Beatrice her drink and he could have had ample opportunity to pour poison into her drink.

Dr Diamond was invited to the Murder Mystery Party and was one of the first guests to arrive. Everyone saw him chatting with Beatrice and, as a doctor, he must have had access to poison. Could he be the killer?

Little Puzzling village’s Mayor Elizabeth Stamp has had a lot of dealings with Beatrice Campion recently. The mayor was planning a new children’s playground in the village but Beatrice wanted to it stopped because it was near her home.

George Letterman, the village’s famous author, hasn’t been getting along with Beatrice too well lately. Beatrice had started writing a blog about his books and had posted some terrible reviews of his work. Could he have acted out of revenge?

Movie star Scarlett Leigh was looking forward to a leading role in a new movie directed by Alfred Hatchback. But Beatrice Campion was putting the money up to make the movie and she wanted Scarlett removed! Perhaps Scarlett took matters into her own hands and removed Beatrice?

Madame Futura claims to be a ghost hunter. However, rumour has it that Beatrice Campion had proof that there was nothing spooky about Madame Futura at all and that she was nothing but a fraud. Could Madame Futura have struck Beatrice down before she could produce the evidence?

Before you start your investigation Detective Puzzler has something to add.

This appears to be the glass that Beatrice Campion drank from. A quick examination reveals that there is an odd smell from the liquid inside. It would appear to have been poisoned.

This is such a terrible shock! You see, I gave Beatrice Campion my glass of punch. When she arrived my butler gave her a glass of punch but she knocked it over so I gave her my glass. It was my glass she drank from. I think someone had poisoned my drink. Was someone trying to poison me?

Ah, but now you’re thinking that if it was my glass that held the poison I must have added it and then handed the glass to Beatrice. Of course, I didn’t! I was surrounded by people when Beatrice knocked her glass over. Ask any of my guests, I wouldn’t have had the chance to add poison without being seen!

Detective Puzzler has been able to speak to some of the other guests at the party. Did any of them see Lady Henrietta add anything to her glass?

I had poured a glass of punch for Mrs Campion but she spilled it. I was pouring her a fresh glass when Lady Henrietta handed me her untouched drink and told me to give that to Mrs Campion as it would be quicker. I think the poison was meant for Lady Henrietta!

I saw no one touch or add anything to the punch while I was serving the drinks. But I didn’t see what happened to Lady Henrietta’s drink so someone may have added poison to that. I wish I could help you more!

What does Detective Puzzler think about Gerald Garnet’s statement?

I can’t pretend I like the old bat and we certainly had our arguments. Have you seen the things she wrote on her blog about my books? I was chatting to Lady Henrietta when Beatrice arrived.

Lady Henrietta put her drink down and went to welcome Beatrice but I would not have had time to put any poison in the drinks as I was with Dr Diamond and Mayor Stamp. I’m sure they would have noticed me do anything like that.

This is just so terribly shocking! I didn’t like Beatrice Campion, I don’t think I know anyone who did, but I would never wish any harm to another person. Let me tell you what I saw.

I was standing in the entrance hall when Beatrice arrived. I had been talking to Scarlett but she moved away when Beatrice entered. Beatrice picked up a full glass of punch from the table.

Scarlett told Beatrice that the glass belonged to Lady Henrietta and suggested she go to see the butler for a fresh glass of punch as he was pouring drinking for everyone. I saw Beatrice replace the glass and walk away.

What does this piece of evidence from Madame Futura mean? Does it help you decide who killed Beatrice?
