EDITOR’S LETTER EAZZY #01 It’s easy to discover something new, but it is so much harder to make it stay in our lives for long enough to be remembered. I am thankful to have met so many people who played a part in my project. Behind every article of fashion is a brand with its own distinct ethos, and behind every piece of art is an artist with a unique perspective. For all the creatives whose work make a change in other people’s lives, there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes. Creating a brand means constructing an image and defining it in a way that makes it second nature for audiences and consumers to absorb. In this editorial, we look into the brands, artists, and institutions that have developed a distinct image throughout the time. Andrei Han Editor in Chief

A PAINTED ECHO With Charles II

I first got into music when I was in primary school. I quickly realised that I had more of an interest and understanding of music than my peers. Unfortunately I did not have much access to musical instruments or regular classes outside the school curriculum. This meant that music became a fascination to me but never really a defining aspect of my life.. In my later years as a teenager, I accidentally rediscovered my interest in art. I watched as a close friend of mine played the guitar in front of all my classmates. I saw the attention he got and all the support everyone gave him for doing this. This brought out a competitive side in me because I felt as though this was incredibly easy and I could do better. My motivations were a little petty to begin with but I'm glad it happened because while trying to out-do my friend, I discovered my passion for music and need for a creative outlet. I became completely obsessed with it, I would compose songs everyday and post them every week after learning techniques online and incorporating them into my style. I still had limited resources in Kenya and I remember having to delete all my songs after creating them simply because my computer did not have enough memory to hold them. This was really the reason I started uploading the songs online. With time people started to notice my sounds and helped me craft the style I have today.

INTERVIEW Q&A How would you describe your style? My style of music is a varied mixture of very acoustic natural strings, pianos, drums and native instruments, with a modern electronic touch. When did you start DJing – and what/who were your early passions and influences? I started being a DJ 3 years ago, this was after I had produced a good number of tracks and wanted to display them in a more concise fashion that took their best elements but didn’t give everything away. My earlier influences were EDM celebrities like Steve Aoki, Skrillex, Calvin harris, Getter; and my band. I wanted to create tracks that reflected all these elements. How many hours do you typically spend on a track? I typically spend at least an hour everyday producing, it’s always an adventure learning something new and improving my craft. I just love creating music I like. If you could eternally be stuck in one year’s music scene, which year would it be? It would be 2012 I guess. This is because it’s around the time I started DJing and the music really influenced me as it was going through this transition. It’s gave me a realistic sense of purpose and I liked knowing that I could do it too. 22

AMONGST FEW Q/A What hobbies do you have that relate to the fashion industry? Something that I love to do is work in Illustrator and Photoshop to practice my digital design skills, and translate my creativity from paper to digital art. 28

INTERVIEW What do you think are the current and future trends in fashion? I think a lot of cultural fusion will be prominent in future trends in fashion. There's a real sense of unity and togetherness within the industry right now, and having links with people all over the world is important for moving forwards in the future. My education is preparing me both practically and creatively, but also socially. I am learning the essentials such as pattern cutting, textile design, digital design, but also how to communicate with other designers and photographers as a means of making links within the industry. How do you think education is preparing you to work in fashion? How would you describe your personal style? I would describe my personal style as colourful and fluffy. I always dress to reflect my mood or influence how I want to feel on a particular day. But usually you'll see me wearing bright printed trousers and colourful shoes. What do you think is the rewarding part in fashion? The sense of achievement and pride from creating a project from start to finish. It's always so rewarding to see how you develop your own work from the first initial research point to the very end result when you have your finished garments. 29
