Lester Bowles \"Mike\" Pearson (1897-1972) 14th Prime Minister of Canada, Nobel Peace Laureate (1957). Born in Toronto, graduate of history from the University of Toronto, Lester Pearson was a rare hybrid – a public servant and then elected politician who reached the top of both fields. Many Canadians remember him as the prime minister who brought in medicare at the federal level, a new flag, and a pension plan. But to others all over the world, his principal legacy is international peacekeeping. As Antony Anderson notes in his superb book The Diplomat: Lester Pearson and the Suez Crisis, Pearson’s idea of a United Nations peacekeeping force was born in crisis and achieved with alacrity. With Israel and Egypt on the verge of war after Egypt nationalized the Suez Canal in 1956, Pearson, as Canada’s external affairs minister, recognized that the potential engagement of Communist China and the Soviet Union on one side, and France and Great Britain on the other, meant the situation had become a tinderbox for a larger conflict between the East and the West. Speaking to the United Nations General Assembly, he argued that countries must ‘take advantage of this crisis…to do something about a political settlement.’ He suggested an emergency force on the border of Israel and Egypt. Using contacts developed in his previous role as president of the UN General Assembly, he pushed his resolution to passage. The crisis was averted, and the concept and reality of UN peacekeeping was born. He won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. Behind his rather milquetoast appearance, Pearson was tough and pragmatic. He was no stranger to war, having enlisted in the First World War, and then, as a diplomat, served in London during the late 1930s buildup to the Second World War. Pearson saw peacekeeping as a way to buy time while working to resolve fundamental differences. That role as honest broker has come to define Canada on the world stage – and shape our vision of our country at home. Historica Canada’s programs, which encourage Canadians to learn about and reflect on our country’s history and culture, reach more than 16 million people annually. Boutari Winery in Crete

The new, Boutari Winery in Crete was completed in early 2004 and is one of the best-equipped, state of the art wineries in Europe. Visitors can enjoy a tour of the cellar, the production area, and the rest of the estate and they can enjoy the impressive multimedia show which has gained major awards at international competitions. The Boutari Winery in Crete is built outside Skalani village, on the Fantaxometocho Estate. It is located a few kilometers outside the centre of Heraklion city, close to the archaeological site of Knossos, and is the jewel of the viticultural VQPRD zone of Archanes. The planting of the southernmost privately-owned Boutari vineyards began in 1990. References in bibliographies confirm the close relations of the region with viticulture and the production of wine in antiquity. It is worth noting that the discovery of the first grape press in the Vathypetro area, dates back to 1600 B.C. The main objective of the Boutari company was to set the foundations for the further promotion of Cretan wine worldwide, through the production of high quality wines. In a region that was famous for its ecosystem and its tradition in viticulture, the company managed to enhance the potential of local varieties and made Cretan vineyards known to the broader public, through major distinctions. At an altitude ranging between 170 and 215 metres, on a 7-hectare plot, the privately-owned Boutari vineyard is cultivated based on the principles of organic farming, hosting various Greek and –international varieties. The density of the planting is 3300 plants/hectare. Thanks to the particularly well-studied choice of location, on the northern side of the hill, the vineyard is protected from the \"livas\", the hot summer wind from the south, and benefits from the cool \"meltemia\" winds of the Cretan sea. The soil type is clay, limestone, with good drainage. The vineyard includes the red varieties Kotsifali, Mantilari, Syrah and the white varieties Chardonnay, Malvasia Aromatica and Moschato Spinas, among others. Visitors can enjoy a tour of the cellar, the production area, and the rest of the estate. Its impressive multimedia show has gained major awards at international competitions, and offers a unique journey back in time to the history of Crete. A visit to the wine-tasting hall is definitely worthwhile, to enjoy the wines of the Estate, including the experimental ones, accompanied by dishes of the renowned cuisine of Crete. Scalani Hills Residences is a collection of three accommodation suites within the Boutari Winery. The three luxurious residences have been sensitively renovated to harmonize with the surrounding area. They all enjoy beautiful views of the Fantaxometocho Estate featuring seven hectares of vineyards and olive trees Set in the Archanes wine region with the important archaeological site of Knossos under 5km away, Scalani Hills Residences offers a unique experience amid classical antiquity and viticulture for a truly exclusive getaway or celebration. Guest accommodation comprises three independent residences within the former estate cottage. Each is named after local grape varieties: Kotsifali, Malvasia & Liatiko. The cottage has been completely renovated with stylish, luxurious residences that all feature modern comforts and amenities. A large hall is also available for private dining, celebration events and corporate meetings.

W. David Ward Born in West Yorkshire, England, David immigrated to Canada in 1977. In 1985 and 1986 he studied Graphic Design at George Brown College, then embarked on a career in commercial art. He freelanced as a designer for two years and created book cover illustrations for a number of major publishing companies, among them, Penguin and Viking Press. Despite early successes, Ward left the world of commercial art behind in October 1988, when he moved to the artist colony of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, to concentrate on his own art full-time. The artist's twenty-six year career has been shaped by his extensive travels. He is known primarily for painting the more remote corners of North America: from the windswept coastline of British Columbia to maritime outposts in the east, the American Southwest and Canadian Arctic. In late 2012, the Royal Canadian Mint selected one of David's arctic landscape designs for a limited series of 1 Kilogram, gold and silver, investment coins. These are the latest in a collection of large format coins, which include 'The Spirit of Haida Gwaii,' by Bill Reid. Although David's paintings depict a wide range of subjects, the arctic has been a major theme since 1990. His work can be found in numerous private, corporate and public collections, including: The Gail Art Museum, Seoul South Korea; The Vancouver Maritime Museum; The Provincial Art Gallery in St. John's Newfoundland; The Manx National Gallery and the Government of Ontario.

Emerging ￿￿￿Technology ￿￿￿and ￿￿￿Digital ￿￿￿Currency ￿￿￿ ￿￿￿ Global ￿￿￿Banking ￿￿￿of ￿￿￿the ￿￿￿Future ￿￿￿

Technology ￿￿￿Weapons ￿￿￿of ￿￿￿“Mass ￿￿￿Disruption” ￿￿￿within ￿￿￿the ￿￿￿Finance ￿￿￿ Digital payment systems are the newest form of electronic currency to hit the markets and are widely accepted, by many, as an official form of currency. According to Wiki, Bitcoin, for example, is a decentralized digital currency that enables instant payments to anyone, anywhere in the world. Peer-to-peer technology is primarily used to operate with no central authority: transaction management and money issuance are carried out collectively by the network. Digital payment systems use digital currency, which is sent easily through the Internet, without needing to trust any third party. • Transactions: o Are irreversible by design o Are fast. Funds received are available for spending within minutes. o Cost very little, especially compared to other payment networks. • The supply of digital currency is regulated by software and the agreement of users of the digital payment systems and cannot be manipulated by any government, bank, organization or individual. The limited inflation of digital currency and its supply is distributed evenly (by CPU power) to miners who help secure the network. Digital currency has managed to create a financial system designed to “Disrupt” the banking/finance industry. From reading various sources, the intent behind the technology was to create a way to exchange currency without the rules that govern banks. The technology behind the digital payment systems and digital currency is not regulated and is self-policed. Was there a demand for this market? This is the kind of “out of the box” thinking that created services like Bitcoin, Paypal, Google Wallet and Apple Pay. The launch of several major digital payment system services is now going on 6 years with a growing customer base year after year. It stands to reason that this Digital payment systems service and digital currency is not going away.

The technology behind digital payment systems Is the focus of this blog. The emerging innovation that controls the digital payment systems are built on top of Big Data, Machine Learning and FINTECH Technology. The systems utilize thousands of nodes, hundreds of thousands of database records, if not millions, and it utilizes these technological layers with split second response time. The traditional banking transactions systems cannot match the transaction performance demonstrated by the Big Data Technology driving the digital payment system transactions. The traditional banking transactions must cross through several layers of technology in order to reach its customers.** The data associated with these traditional banking systems are heavily regulated, secured, encrypted, monitored and otherwise policed, so that every transaction is accounted for. (**Note: Depending on when you read this post the previous statement may no longer be true. Backend banking systems are not being armed with Big Data technology and are quickly coming up to speed to keep up with the disrupting technologies) With the current technology driving traditional banks, I think it would be safe to say that the banking industry is more than likely going to transform over the next 3 years into more of a digital payment systems look alike. I believe this due to several factors. The heavy investments being made within the financial technology, or FINTECH, arena. The emerging of digital currency and how, through its disruption, is forcing this transformation. I also believe the customer experience that the digital payment systems provide is a huge reason this form of banking is widely accepted today and this is proven by the recent burst of online consumers of these systems. Look at the partnerships between digital payment systems like Paypal and Bitcoin accepting payments on behalf of digital shopping carts for major retailers. These same digital payment systems are now offering credit and other financial services as well. This is what industry experts consider to be the making of digital transformations and how they take shape. One day some college` students created a networking system that was made so that students could communicate, share pictures, share ideas and much more which ultimately created something new called Social Networking. This might be a crude example of a digital transformation, but I think you all get the point.

Data, Machine Learning and Data Analytics is currently dominating technology, once called the future of technology, but quickly now becoming the standard of technology. I do not think that anyone who understands the contributions Big Data innovation has had on emerging technology would disagree. Within this future are many new technological advancements, innovations and emerging technologies. Google Wallet, Paypal, Apple Pay, Bitcoin and other cloud based digital payment systems are just a few examples of what has happened since 2010. Hadoop was first released in 2008 and it has taken a huge presence within the innovative ranks. I would consider this a larger example of emerging tech since 2010. The future is now. With the number of tech startups that have surfaced within the last few years, bringing their innovation and technological “Weapons of Mass Disruption”, entire industries are using data to revamp the way they do business adding the “Customer Experience” to the forefront for building a competitive edge., with DATA. This is a representation of an army of technology inventors that are releasing new inventions daily, weekly, monthly and yearly continuously impacting the Technology landscape. Banking, as we know it has already changed. Traditional banking is also transforming but this transformation will take some time as banking is redefining itself within the global community.
