Christoph Schrein With wavy, flowing streams of colour, Christoph Schrein’s work takes the viewer into a new realm of time and space. The artist creates shapes that reflect light and float through the air like metallic veils, winding around and overlaying each other in zero gravity. The abstract acrylic glass paintings from the series TARA call forth the complex illusion of spatial depth, creating new spheres beyond the existing reality. Schrein lets viewers discover the sculptural creations from different perspectives; his work offers a chance to pause and reflect. Using a special brush technique, the artist applies oils to both sides of the acrylic. Traces of the artist are barely visible in the works themselves. These monochrome pictures appear to originate from within, the otherworldly matter consisting of shimmering, nuanced colours has taken on a life of its own. There is no beginning and no end, there is no subtle message – these veils of colour move weightlessly on a metaphysical plane beyond the realm of stigmatizing discussion. In his artistic creations, Christoph Schrein always strives for unity and to depict an inner necessity, so that the paintings “divulge and reveal [his] innermost feelings.” He succeeds in creating an ancient and sublime form of matter with gentle waves and gleaming reflections; a material so precious its origins feel more extra-terrestrial than human.

Dining in the Distillery - El Catrin Mexican Memories with Chef Olivier Le Calvez There’s no question – its’ the most popular restaurant in the Distillery District. El Catrin is one of the city’s sweet spots to people watch amidst the revelers on a bright summer’s day. To many – it’s the heart and soul of the “DD” and if you’ve ever strolled by the sprawling courtyard patio of this casual Mexican bistro, you’ll know exactly what I mean. Amidst the clinking of frozen margaritas over the buzz of conversation and the din of laughter, patrons flirt shamelessly under the bright chandeliers in the sunshine to a funky Latin soundtrack. What’s not to love? So, take note – to all you downtown hipsters who wouldn’t dream of setting foot in the Distillery District – here’s what else you’re missing: A riveting two-storey mural by renowned Mexican graffiti artist Oscar Flores (called a “Fever Dream” by the New York Times); Canada's largest mescal and tequila bar with over 120 different labels; and last and best - an amazing menu by one of Mexico’s top chefs, Olivier Le Calvez, who was recruited directly to Toronto to bring his vision to El Catrin. “When I was asked to come here, I went to all the markets and tasted the restaurants and there was nothing approachable to real traditional Mexican – so, I wanted Canadians to learn what is Mexican cuisine.” As Le Calvez talks about the various regions of Mexico and how each plays a part on the menu, the show begins on the table. Olivier summons up charred corn served off the cob, a trio of veggie tacos, shrimp ceviche and the trademark, “made at the table” El Catrin guacamole. All are fresh, simple and scrumptious. Then the highlight appears, Pulpo Zarandeado. It’s a grilled octopus tentacle seasoned with pineapple and ahi panca sauce on a nest of grilled onions. The rustic, peppery sweetness of it all demands a beverage to go with. After sip tasting some of the house cocktails - the tamarind margarita wins the best supporting beverage award.

I ask about the inspiration behind his food and Olivier drifts off to a vision from his youth: “I was born in Mexico in 1974 and all my memories … everything that I cook and entertain with is based on my memories and those smells. Like when I was young, walking on the streets with my grandfather through the market and picking up the masa for the tortillas.” He pauses, then continues: “We Mexicans enjoy being at the table, so we will arrive at a restaurant at around three o’ clock and finish maybe around six o’clock and then more friends will come by and so you stay a little longer – there’s a whole festivity.” I glance at the time. “Is that why you invited us down here for two-thirty?” I jest. “Exactly,” he says without missing a beat – “to feel what is real Mexican.” By Kim Gertler @kgertler Olivier Le Calvez, Executive Chef, and Stuart Kempston, General Manager, El Catrin El Catrin 18 Tank House Lane 416.203.2121 www.elcatrin.ca

ERWIN Wine%Tourism%in%Chile% BLUMENFELD Article%&%photos%by%Sonia Khurana The publication of Chile has been blessed with natural beauty as dramatic and varied as the country his photos in is thin and long. But even more remarkable are its inhabitants, the way in which renowned they employ their resources and the effect this has on the visitors who slip in and out of their midst. Our adventure began in San Pedro de Atacama, where our guides at Cosmo Andino made us privy to the stunning valleys, volcanic formations, red rocks, salt lakes, flamingo reserves, thermal springs, shooting geysers and blue lagoons that make the Atacama Desert so magnificent. After much deliberation, we chose to explore the Colchagua Valley in the central wine region. Best known for its voluptuous reds, producers in this region offer a wide assortment of varietals, scale and style. We chose to stay at Casa Pando in Santa Cruz, a lovely B&B run by a couple who know and love this region and were able to orchestrate our every desire. Their worthy advice included a visit to the Colchagua Museum, which was unexpected and unparalleled treat. It is necessary to make reservations to visit the wineries, some of which have fabulous restaurants, but this can be done a day in advance. We began at Montgras, which was such a civilized affair. Welcomed into a large courtyard surrounded by the beautiful building and grounds, we took our pick of the intimate tasting areas where we sampled and discussed their easy drinking well priced range of wines one with our host. Based on our tastes, he helped us to select more to take home and try from their Antu and ultra premium Ninquén ERWIN lines. Montgras offers an interesting range of activities for visitors to make a day BLUMENFELD of it, if so desired. François Lurton was a bit different. We walked right into the action of new barrels being rolled through the production area to meet Carlos, who showed us The publication of around this modest but effective facility where we tasted a handful of biodynamic his photos in beauties. The Lurton family is very well established in Bordeaux, but has put down roots in pursuit of fruit in other parts of the world such as Spain, Portugal, renowned Argentina and Chile. They are especially proud of their Gran Araucano which has thrice been named best Cabernet Sauvignon in Chile, and their iconic Alka Carmenere is also highly regarded.

OWM was by far the most intense and involved experience to date - anywhere. Antonio began his lifework in winemaking in Chile, which led him to Mendoza then Sonoma, but brought back by his roots to Chile, he and his cousin Jaime started this small scale exercise in alchemy. They combine skill, passion and playfulness to create their blends which may well differ from year to year. After getting an overview of their operation, we ended up in the barrel room, where Antonio pulled samples of each varietal for us to try and then invited us to create our own blends, which we then tasted blind and chose the winner (OWM’s of course). Our first night in Santa Cruz, intuition led us to Etiqueta Negra for dinner. After a wonderful meal, we found ourselves sitting around the firepit until the wee hours with Mika, the passionate proprietor, chef and bon vivant with whom we shared stories, wine and smoky morsels of meat which he periodically tossed onto the grill. After that, we didn’t feel like going anywhere else, and in unprecedented fashion, returned for the remainder of our dinners out, bringing fellow travellers along, feeling like we were returning home. On the last day, we opted for a change of pace and headed to the coast in search of olive oil, salt and seafood, stopping frequently to photograph the forest, mountain and ocean views that commanded and received our full attention. And then we stopped at Lapostolle, in the Apalta region of Colchagua. Our anticipation grew as we drove through the vast and undulating property, to the architectural sculpture of a building nestled into the landscape. It’s difficult to appreciate the magnitude of what lies inside until you are surrounded by massive oak vats in the fermentation room, and begin to descend the spiral staircase exploration of each level dedicated to a separate stage of wine production. Our tour ended at the glass topped tasting area featuring a tantalizing view of the wine collection amassed below, where we sampled a selection of good to better to best. James Suckling has scored their flagship Clos Apalta 2014 100% impending its release. We luxuriated at the Aubrey Boutique Hotel perched atop Santiago’s lively Bellavista neighbourhood before flying home. This was a mere glimpse into Chile’s endless possibilities. With so much to explore and experience, book your trip and embark upon an adventure of your own.

John Lennon “War is Over” poster Meeting between Pearson and Lennon, Dec 23, 1969 \"When I was 13 years old, my grandfather, Lester Pearson, came to our home for dinner. On the flight to Toronto, John Lennon happened to be on the same plane. This was 1969, the year that John and Yoko launched their peace crusade. When informed that Pearson, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, was on the plane, Lennon approached my grandfather. They spoke briefly and Lennon presented Pearson with one of his “War Is Over” posters including the scribbled message you see above. At dinner that night, my grandfather gave me the poster. You can imagine my shock and gratitude! I was a huge Beatles fan. I put this precious memento away for safekeeping. At one point, I lent it to my brother who wanted to show it to his friends. I never saw it again until recently. Eleven years ago, while moving, I came across an envelope stuck in between other papers in an old box. You can guess what was inside! To my great shame, all those years, I had accused my brother of losing it! Profuse apologies followed, the poster came out of hiding and is now proudly displayed in my living room.\" Barb Hannah
