POCKET GUIDE INTRODUCTION TAPERED THREADS THREAD IDENTIFICATION METAL SEAL The RYCO Thread ID Booklet is to assist with SOFT SEAL identification of hydraulic threads and connectors. Correct identification is of vital importance, as the incorrect application of high pressure connectors presents an immediate safety risk. Selection of hydraulic connectors can be complex due to the large array of thread types that are commonly available. While some people become conversant with hydraulic connector standards through experience, others can become confused by the similarities between some connector types. While the connector types and standards shown within this publication are by no means exhaustive, the standard hydraulic connectors are shown in detail to help identify the correct thread and connector type. INTRODUCTION EXAMINE IDENTIFYING THREADS What is the sealing method? 1 Is it used in a port? Is it used with a hose coupling or connector? 2 COMPARE Look through the pictorial index (Pages to 12) for the most likely connector type. Start by identifying the sealing method and checking that section of the index. 3 MEASURE Measure the thread or other diameter as indicated in the illustration. TIP: Male threads are always easier to measure than female threads. 1 RYCO 24·7 THREAD IDENTIFICATION POCKET GUIDE

IDENTIFYING THREADS INTRODUCTION 4 CHECK THE TABLE Look for the closest match in the table. Ensure that you are reading the dimension from the correct column. 5 CONFIRM THE PITCH TAPERED THREADS Once the nearest match METAL SEAL is established, you can confirm your selection is SOFT SEAL correct by checking that the pitch is the same as that listed in the chart. If it is not the expected pitch, go back to step 2 and choose the next similar connector. 6 CONFIRM THE SEAT You can also confirm your selection by measuring the angle of any sealing surface. The gauge will be parallel to the connector axis when correct. RYCO 24·7 2 THREAD IDENTIFICATION POCKET GUIDE

INTRODUCTION IDENTIFYING THREADS HOW TO USE THE SEAT GAUGE 1 The seat gauge is used to determine the seat angle of the fitting. When a matching angle is found, the gauge will be parallel to the connector axis. 2 The gauge can also measure internal angles. Note: Internal angles may be difficult to measure due to varying inside diameters. 3 Seat angles can be found in the ‘Quick ID’ sections throughout the booklet. Thread Form: JIC Thread Angle: 37º 3 RYCO 24·7 THREAD IDENTIFICATION POCKET GUIDE

IDENTIFYING THREADS INTRODUCTION HOW TO USE THE PITCH GAUGE 1 To determine the thread TAPERED THREADS pitch, use the RYCO 24•7 19 pitch gauges and check the thread against each gauge INCORRECT until you find a match. In this example BSP gauge 19 (TPI) is incorrect. 2 When you find the matched METAL SEAL pitch, the gauge will sit neatly 28 within the thread form. CORRECT In this example BSP gauge 28 is the correct TPI and thread form. 3 Once the pitch is established, SOFT SEAL identify the thread type by using the tables. NPTF threads (also known as Dryseal) are an improvement to NPT. Controlled truncation of the NPTF threads means that the metal-to-metal seal is at the root and crest of the threads in addition to the flanks of the threads, unlike NPT threads which seal on the flanks of the thread only.
