For manythe fear of failure is enough to hold them backfrom taking the chance at starting their own smallbusiness; however, with careful planning and someluck a small business will be set for success. When starting a small business it is important tostep back and decide what exactly the company willbe focusing on. What type of products or serviceswill it be providing and to what group or nichewill the company be aiming towards as its targetaudience. This seems like a simple enough stephowever many people many people either try tocater to too broad of an audience or to too smallof a group. Although trying to appeal to a largeaudience may sound great at first, it can be

harmful for a small business. Trying to cater toa broad spectrum of people makes the company losefocus and ultimately lose its identity. Targetingtoo small of an audience is a problem simplybecause a small target group makes for a smallpopulation of potential customers.Another thing to consider is the supply and demandof the market that the company will be focused on.A company will need to either be excellent at whatit does, very unique in what it does, and mostimportantly lucky to succeed let alone survive.Choosing a market that is largely in demand andshort in supply will increase a company chance ofsurvival immensely. The opposite can be said fora market that is low in supply and large in demand.Try to study where current business trends areheaded towards and what is needed or wanted bytoday consumers. Also, it is important whenlooking at trends to try and think about its longterm viability. The last thing that you want todo is start a business based on a fad that is over

within a year or two. When a general direction is decided for your smallbusiness, it is important to then think about thethings that your company will do better than yourcompetition. What will make you unique? What willmake people choose your products and servicesover anyone else? Most importantly, is theresomething that will make people choose you overyour competition? There is definitely a problemif the last question was met with hesitation ora no. There needs to be something that sets yourcompany apart from the rest and pulls you out fromthe mold of every other business. Finally when all of that is set, it is importantto think of how you will get your name out to yourconsumers. Marketing and advertisement arecrucial in getting your business known to youraudience especially at the start of your business. If it possible getting a public relations firm tohelp market your name will help immensely.
