Background & HistoryThe J opened in 1983 and serves all residents of the community, regardless of ethnicity, ageor disability. Its premier special needs summer camp, Camp Giborim, serves over 145 childrenand young adults between the ages of 3-22. The mission of Camp Giborim, meaning “heroes”in Hebrew, is to offer a traditional recreational summer camp environment for special needscampers with autism, Down syndrome, developmental delays and various other disabilities.The camp is filled with innovative activities and creative programming within a culture ofinclusion.The special needs population expressed a need for a year-round program for youth and adults.The J, committed to meeting these needs, developed Giborim U (Gib U), a program offeringenrichment classes and social events.Giborim U MissionGiborim U is a program for children, teens and adults with special needs and includes courses in fitness, the arts, sports, recreation,life skills and health and wellness. Giborim U Team Dr. Diane K. Wilen Risa Spevack Giborim U Co-Chair Coordinator Dr. Diane K. Wilen is a Florida Risa Spevack has worked with special licensed psychologist and school needs clients since 2000. She is a psychologist. She received a certified personal trainer with the Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish American Council on Exercise (ACE) with distinction from Northwestern aand is a nationally certified and University in Evanston, Illinois and state licensed athletic trainer. She a Master of Arts and doctorate received a Bachelor of Arts degree in natural science anddegree in school psychology from the University of Illinois in athletic training from Hofstra University and is a FloridaChampaign-Urbana. She is currently retired after 36 years of licensed emergency medical technician (EMT) and a certifiedservice as a school psychologist for Broward County Public CPR/AED/first-aid instructor.Schools. Dr. Wilen is a member of the Board of Directorsof the David Posnack Jewish Community Center and was a Kevin Trooninkey proponent in the development of the DPJCC’s Ben and CoordinatorDorothy Spencer Special Services Camp in 1991 (CampGiborim), a highly acclaimed special needs day camp. Kevin Troonin obtained his bachelor’s degree in exceptional student Beth Allen, M.S. education from the Teacher Education Giborim U Co-Chair Program at Broward College.
