Sidney Sheldon an American writer, playwright and novelist, was born in Chicago, Illinois, on 11th February 1917. Sidney Sheldon is one of the world's handful of top bestselling authors who have sold more than 250 million books. He is also the only writer to have won an Oscar, a Tony, and an Edgar, and one of the most translated writers in the world.

Chapter 1 The story started by describing that Ashley, the main character of this story is being followed by people that belonged to different world. Ashley has been living in Cupertino, California for three years. Ashley works at Global Computer Graphics Corporation as an expert in advertising and graphic design, creating layouts with text and images. The writer made a light appearance of Ashley's two co- workers, Shane Miller and Dennis Tibble; Shane Miller is her supervisor and Dennis Tibble has a secret crush on her. It was also told that Ashley's father is Dr. Steven Patterson, a doctor that is famous in California. Ashley only has her father; her mother died when she was only 12 years old. There was a flashback to Ashley's high school life, specifically what happened to her and Jim Cleary, her first boyfriend, back then. Ashley loves Jim Cleary so much, but her father does not approve of Jim that's why they tried to leave and go to a place far away from Ashley's father so that no one would object to their relationship. But on the day they were going to meet as they were about to leave, Ashley was very surprised because Jim didn't come. She thinks until this day that Jim suddenly abandoned her.

Chapter 2 Another character is introduced to the readers, and it is Toni Prescott. Toni Prescott was born in London; she likes to sing and she loves sports. She also works at Global Computer Graphics Corporation, the company where Ashley Patterson also works. One day, Toni discovered the world of the internet through the help of her friend, Kathy Healy, who is from the rival company she works for. Toni met many different people because of that. She was able to talk to people from different parts of the world. Then, one night, she came across Jean Claude Parent, and eventually developed a crush on him even though they were just talking through chat. This guy is from Quebec City in Canada. It was also told about how much Toni hates Ashley.

Chapter 3 Once again, another character is introduced to the readers; this time, it is Alette Peters. Alette was born in Rome and loved everything about art. Just like Toni and Ashley, Alette also works for Global Computer Graphics Corporation. Alette is very close to Toni, they talk a lot and they have Ashley as their favorite subject. Alette went to church every sunday morning. She likes to do charitable activities and devoted much of her time doing such acts for people. One day, when she went to a museum, she met Richard Melton. Alette eventually developed a crush on him from the very moment they started talking. One factor that made Richard be able to come close to Alette is the love he also have for art.

Chapter 4 Going back to Ashley, Ashley is still full of wonder because there are things happening in her house but she doesn't remember doing any of them. She really thinks that maybe she has a stalker and that person is the one who did all of this. Because of this, Ashley is always afraid and doesn't have any idea of what to do. There was an envelope in Ashley's mailbox in the downstairs entrance hall; it was a letter of invitation for their class reunion. While reading the invitation letter, she thought of Jim Cleary and remembered the pain of desperately waiting for him at the station but he did not come; that's why she thought of not going to the reunion anymore. But Ashley had second thoughts and in the end, she decided to just attend because she thought that Jim wouldn't have the guts to show up; she just wanted to meet some of her classmates back then. When Ashley arrived in Bedford, the place where the reunion is held, she met her other classmates and soon after, Florence, one of her closest friends, approached her. Ashley was shocked when she told her that Jim was murdered the day after their graduation party. Jim was found dead as he had been stabbed to death and castrated. Ashley didn't know about Jim's death so she felt very shocked and scared when she found this out. She thought that maybe it is her father who killed Jim since her father dislikes Jim very much.

Chapter 5 Dennis Tibble asks love advice from Ashley and he wanted her to come over in his apartment for this. When Ashley arrived at Tibble's apartment, Tibble offered a glass of wine to Ashley, and just after having atleast two sip, Ashley lost consciousness as if she's been drugged. Ashley then woke up not knowing where she is currently at; she later found at that she's been laying at a bed of a cheap hotel room in Chicago, naked. When she went to Tibble's apartment, it was Friday, and today, it's Monday. Time surely vanished in a mist. She can't remember anything that had happened after taking the two sips of wine given by Tibble. She doesn't have any idea why she's been naked in that bed, she felt as if every part of her body has been violated. Ashley contacted her father to ask for help to buy a ticket to go back to San Jose since she doesn't have any money in her pocket. The next day, Ashley was about to leave for work when Shane called him asking her if she had already heard of the news that Tibble was found dead, as he had been stabbed to death and castrated, too.

Chapter 6 Deputy Sam Blake is a detective that married the Sheriff's sister, Serena Dowling. This sheriff is also his bestfriend and the reason why he joined the Sheriff's department, he is Sheriff Matt Dowling. Deputy Sam Blake is the detective assigned to Dennis Tibble's murder case. While investigating the crime behind Dennis Tibble's death, he thought that maybe the one Dennis admires has something to do with this, that's why he talked to Ashley. She thought she have got to be careful talking to Deputy Sam Blake as she wants to protect his father from this; Ashley thinks his father is the one who killed Dennis because his father hates this boy so much.

Chapter 7 Deputy Sam Blake then appeared at Ashley's apartment that evening and asked her questions for things related to Tibble's death. As usual, she answers every single question carefully. Then, the story slightly shifted to Tony. Tony would be finally meeting Jean Claude Parent for the first time in person for the computer convention in Quebec. When Toni have already arrived at Quebec, she and Jean finally met in person and they get along very well. They even spend much of their time together when Toni is still staying at Quebec for the computer convention. One day, Jean invited Toni to spend the night in his house. The next day, Jean was found dead, as he had been stabbed to death and castrated, just like Jim and Dennis. Fingerprint of Toni was found in the crime scene but there was no record of Toni Prescott.

Chapter 8 Alette Peters and Richard Melton arranged to meet at De Young Museum. They spent the day together and did a lot of things. Richard invited Alette to come over his house. The next day, Richard was found dead, as he had been stabbed to death and castrated, too, just like the three other men from the earlier chapters. The detectives are now wondering because there have been consecutive cases of murders through this way of killing and they suspected Ashley Patterson that's why Deputy Sam Blake invited Ashley to do a polygraph test to see if she's lying for the questions he is throwing. The test result then showed that there's a less than one percent chance that Ashley is lying.

Chapter 9 Ashley called Deputy Sam Blake to come over her house as she's been frightened of the message written at her mirror, \"You will die.\" She wanted to have someone to be with as she is afraid for his life because it seems like someone wants to kill her. Ashley requested Deputy Sam Blake to stay with her until morning since she really can't handle the fear she's been feeling. The next day, Deputy Sam Blake's naked body was found by the wife of the building superintendent in the alley that ran behind Ashley Patterson's apartment building. He had been stabbed to death and castrated as well.

Chapter 10 Sheriff Dowling interviews Ashley as they think she is the only one who could help to solve the murder case of Deputy Sam Blake since she's the last person to be with him before he died. Sheriff Dowling's team also raid Ashley's house and they found out things related to the murder case of other men that was also stabbed to death and castrated. They have figured out that Ashley Patterson, Toni Prescott, and Alette Peters are all the same person.

Chapter 11 David Singer is a corporate lawyer who used to be a criminal defense lawyer living with her wife, Sandra, and they are approaching their baby coming soon. The flashback of what happened years ago regarding David, David's mother, and Dr. Patterson was narrated. It was told that David's mother was ill and only Dr. Patterson could help her mother. Given that Dr. Patterson is a busy man, it is difficult to reach him and have appointment with him. But David did all what he could to go near Dr. Patterson for the sake of her mother. In the present day, Dr. Patterson asked David to represent Ashley in the court. But David is having a second thought on this since he's not a criminal defense lawyer anymore.

Chapter 12 Since David Singer is having a second thought on whether he will take Ashley's case or not, he is thinking of turning the information he will get from Ashley and turn it over to Jesse Quiller, one of the best criminal defense lawyers in the country. David believes if anyone could help Ashley, it would be Jesse. David Singer meet with Ashley to ask Ashley questions about the murder that they suspect her to be the person behind all of this. Ashley's answers just proves that she is innocent, and she didn't know some of those people they mentioned that she killed. But the Sheriff told David that Ashley must have also fooled David since they have all the proofs that she really did that crime. David looked at Ashley and it can be seen that she really believes to what she is saying, that she is innocent. Something must be really wrong, he thought. David arranged an appointment with a psychiatrist to see if what's really with Ashley. They had a hypnotherapy session. David Singer found out that Ashley has MPD or Multiple Personality Disorder as Ashley's other personalities, or what we also call 'alters', started to talk since she is under the possession of this psychiatrist.

Chapter 13 It was told the reason why David isn't a criminal defense lawyer anymore; that is because he once failed the accused person of the case he's handling. Back then, he was taking a case of a person that was accused of killing her wealthy stepmother, and later on committed suicide because David did not believe her. At that time, David is a pupil of Jesse. And when the incident happened she quit to Jesse's hands and later on works for corporate lawyers. David doesn't want to have someone's life at his hands anymore.

Chapter 14 Since David got involved in the trial of the century, it has a big effect on him. The partnership that would change his life would be gone if he decided to really take Ashley's case. The life he wanted to provide his family wouldn't come to reality anymore. So he have to decide between this partnership and Dr. Patterson, the one who saved his mother from its illness. Since he's choosing the partnership, he tried to refer Jesse Quiller to Dr. Patterson but Dr. Patterson wanted only David to defend Ashley in the court and no other else. Since he will defend Ashley in the court, he'd be having a leave on absence without pay. Jesse lend a hand to David to be able to have access to papers he will need for Ashley's case. His wife also helped him since she is a paralegal. While preparing for the trial, they did all the best that they could to find witnesses that could help to them. David also meet with the judge to talk about the case to save some of their time, and eventually, the talk didn't go well. The trial then started to took place at the Hall of Justice in San Jose.

Chapter 15 David made an appointment with Dr. Salem to hypnotize Ashley again. He wanted to talk with her alters. The hypnotherapy session lasted briefly. They were able to talk with Toni and Alette. They asked her questions about those men that got killed and Toni told them that if you have to protect yourself, it is a right to kill people. David and Dr. Salem exchanged look after Toni said this. There have been multiple juror interrogation and every single meeting held, it always seem like they feel like they are going to waste their time for this.

Chapter 16 The day of the trial finally came. It took place at the Hall of Justice in San Jose. They have Judge Williams as the judge. The prosecutor is Mickey Brennan. The trial finally starts. Brennan told them that Ashely used an allas to do this crime. Then, David said that Michley has MPD or Multiple Personality Disorder and he explained what that illness is. After that, Brennan called his first witness, Special Agent Vincent Jordan. He testified about the fingerprints of Ashley that was seen in the place where the murder took place. David then asked Agent Jordan regarding of Ashley tried to remove her fingerprints at the murder scene, then Agent Jordan said no; that mean Ashley made no attempt to remove her prints because she was innocent. Brennan then proceed with his next witness, Stanley Clarke. He is with National Biotech Laboratory work with DNA. He is the one who assessed if who owns the DNA found on the murder scene. He said that in the different places where different person were killed, Ashley's DNA can be found in all of it. Next witness is Detective Light man, he is the one that the building superintendent summoned to Dennis Tibble's apartment. He said that the victim had been stabbed to death and castrated, and also, had sex before he died.

He also said that the fingerprints they found doesn't match any record they have, but when they already had Ashley's prints, they have concluded that the prints were from her. On the following day, they first had Brian Hill for the witness. He is a guard at the De Young Museum. He told the court that Richard Melton had spent some time together with a girl, and its name was Alette Peters. Brennan asked him if he happen to see that woman he's talking about and he said yes, then pointed to Ashley. He said that he also saw her with Richard Melton on the day it was murdered. David then started to ask the witness regarding his hesitation earlier when he got asked whether Ashley Patterson was the woman Richard Melton was with. The witness said yes, because it seemed like the woman he is with was younger than Ashley. David then started talking about the reason and that is because Richard is with Alette that time, Ashley's alter that is 8 years younger than Ashley but he was stopped by the judge. The next witness is Bernice Jenkins, a waitress at the cafe in the De Young Museum. She said she saw Richard with a girl named Alette Peters at the cafe. After that, Gary King was on the stand, he is Richard's roommate. He said Richard is interested in a girl named Alette Peters then also pointed to Ashley. The trial for that day was already finished and David, together with her wife Sandra, were having dinner at San Fresco, ahen an urgent telephone call for David was given.

Chapter 17 Since the trial was the topic all over the internet, David considered Jesse's suggestion to air for a mistrial since jurors might be influenced by what the people all over the intermet says. But it wasn't guaranteed. The trial started again. Brennan was questioning Sheriff Dowling. Sheriff Dowling said that Deputy sam blake had been stabbed and castrated. He also said that Ashley's fingerprints were positive on the crime scene. David then asked the witness about the bloody knife that was found in Miss Patterson's kitchen; he asked if it was hidden or was it wrapped, and the witness said no. David wanted to prove that Ashley was truly innocent. Brennan then proceed to have the mirror from Ashley's medicine cabinet that has the phrase \"YOU WILL DIE\" written using a red lipstick get in the courtroom. He called the next witness, Miss Laura Niven, a handwriting expert. She said that Ashley's penmanship matches the phrase written on the mirror. David felt like the judge hates him from that moment. He felt like he really can't defend Ashley and he wasn't the right person for this. That's why, she tried to resign for the case but Judge Williams said he can't. David was trapped.

Chapter 18 It was said that more than three months had already passed since the beginning of the trial. Sandra's giving birth was also approaching. They had hoped that the trial would end before Sandra gives birth. David asked Emily, Jesse's wife, to take care of sandra while he's busy with the trial. On the next day, there was a session in the court; still about the case of Ashley Patterson. Brennan called Dr. Lawrence Larkin as its witness. He is a psychiatrist and he said he have not yet seen any case of multiple personality disorder. He also said he doesn't believe that MPD truly exists. David then started questioning the witness. He asked if Dr. Larkin knows Dr. Salem (he was the psychiatrist who hypnotized Ashley and discovered that she has mpd), Dr. Donovan, and Dr. Ingram. The witness said yes. David said that all those three doctors have treated cases of MPD. Brennan then proceed to the next witness, Dr. Upton. He said that there are no test to knowing if someone who claims they have MPD is truly real. He also said that at some cases, even when a person was under hypnosis, we really can't tell if they're faking it or not. Many doctors/psychiatrist were brought to the witness box and they were all testifying about the existence of MPD; if it is real or not. Brennan then showed police photographs to the jurors leaving them in awe.

Chapter 19 David attended the trial even though he's feeling ill. He still wanted to continue. David then proceeded that Brennan and his witnesses, doen't know much anything about MPD. He told the court that there must be guilt on the act, but Ashley doesn't have this, she doesn't have guilty intention as she is innocent and was unaware of the crimes that was done by her alters. David called Dr. Ashanti as his witness. Dr. Ashanti said he voluntarily come to stand for those suffer from MPD. David asked him questions about MPD, like \"Was the host aware in the take overs of its alters\", and many more. David wanted to give the people view about what MPD really is. Brennan then proceded questioning the expertise of the doctor in this aspect. Since he has given him number of people he have treated. Next witness was Dr. Salem. David asked him questions about what does Ashley experiences in having MPD. Just like what Dr. Salem said; every time Ashley's alters take over, she is in a state of fugue amnesia. Brennan then questioned him to prove that the one who does the hynopsis can affect how the patient would behave. David then called Shane Miller as the next witness. David asked him questions to prove that Ashley's been showing symptoms of MPD. The trial then ended for that day. David was still hopeless because he doesn't have any idea on how he is going to make jurors believe that MPD really exists.

Chapter 20 David asked Ashley to stand on witness stand and just answer his questions. The trial has began. David asked Ashley questions about the three men. He asked if she knows them and she answered that she knows some of them and she doesn't know some of them. David also asked her if she ever had problem with law, and she said no. Brennan then proceeded questioning Ashley. He asked her if she had sex with those men since traces of a vaginal discharge were found on the bodies of all three men and the DNA tests matched Ashley's DNA, and she answered no. Brennan said he wanted to talk with Ashley's alters but Ashley said she can't make them appear when she wants to; it is them that must voluntarily appear and take over since she doesn't have any control over them. Brennan then said that she can't show it to them since they are not real. David then asked for Ashley to be hypnotized but the Judge said he can't do that in the court room. David tried to make a scene by triggering Toni to come out, but unfortunately, she did not appear. Same thing to Alette, she did not appear as well. The hope to win the case is slowly vanishing .

Chapter 21 Brennan is making his closing argument since the end of this trial is approaching. He's saying that Ashley is indeed guilty and the claim of having MPD wasn't true— but an excuse. David is the next one to make his closing argument. He said once again that Ashley is not guilty and is truly suffering from MPD. The jurors then have their verdict. They all concluded that Ashley is guilty in the three murder case. David is really scared at that point because he is thinking he might lose another person as well— he's thinking he might fail another person again. Later that, David come up with an idea to have Ashley hypnotized at other place and show it to the court through a video record since they do not give him the permission to have Ashley hypnotized there. On the following day, David showed this film to the court. The people watched the film and they have seen Toni and Alette and heard them talk. This is the only time they've got to witnessed Ashley's alters. The judge then finally believed that David's claim was true— that Ashley suffers from MPD. David requested the judge to have Ashley be sent to a Psychiatric Hospital to get treated. Dr. Patterson visited Ashley in her cell. He tried to comfort her and told her everything would be okay. But after the trial, Ashley with that he should have just proven guilty even though she's not and had the death penalty so that her sufferings would finally come to an end. She thought; it would be better if she's just dead. On the other hand, David's wife has given birth already. They named it Jeffrey Singer. Since David won the trial, he did not lose the partnership that would make his family have a better life. They would also finally buy the penthouse they want.

Chapter 22 Ashley was sent to Connecticut Psychiatric Hospital to get treated from MPD. The doctors tried to make Ashley feel welcome from its new home. They briefly discussed that there will be sessions of therapy with Dr. Gilbert Keller that would hopefully help Ashley recover from MPD. They also send Ashley to its room with pastel blue walls, a small couch and a comfortable-looking bed.

Chapter 23 Dr. Gilbert Keller is the one assigned to Ashley's case as she is specialized to treating patients with MPD. He surely is the one that would help Ashley to recover. The next day, Dr. Keller started making Ashley comfortable with her; that is the first step he's taking in order to achieve his goal of treating Ashley. Dr. Keller wanted to talk with her alters that's why he later then hypnotized Ashley as it is the only time when her alters could appear and could be talk with. Since the plan is just starting, his conversation with Alette and Toni wasn't smooth. Toni didn't like the thing that Dr. Keller is doing, that's why she talked to Alette and warned her to not get fooled, because if they successfully treat Ashley, Alette and her would be dead.

Chapter 24 Toni came up with an idea that she will seduce the man escorting them to their room. She thought that through this, the man could help them escape from the hospital; by that, Ashley would not get treated, and they would not be dead. But little she did not know that what she's expecting won't come to reality. The man she's trying to seduce is loyal to Dr. Keller. He told him about what Toni have done to her earlier. When Toni found this out, she was very pissed off. At this moment, Toni also attacked Ashley. Ashley felt hopeless at that moment. She thought of ending her life through something sharp. She saw a paint brush and took it. Since the handles of the paintbrushes were wooden, she snapped one in half, making it to expose sharp, jagged edges. She then took the sharp edge and placed it on her wrist. Fortunately, they immediately found Ashley. Dr. Keller talked to Ashley and asked her to never hurt herself again. He reassured her that she will be treated, and she will leave this place one day in the future. Months has passed, but there is still no progress that can be seen. Dr. Keller tried all the way he thought of to help to Ashley's recovery. It also seemed like Dr. Keller developed feelings for Ashley, which is definitely not good for them.

Chapter 25 Since Dr. Keller tries his best to communicate with Toni and Alette, for Toni, it seems like this is a warning because their death is approaching. Toni once again came up with an idea that she and Alette would make Dr. Keller believe that there's been a progress to Ashley's recovery. Therapy sessions has been held. Toni and Alette carefully answers Dr. Keller's question as they are sticking to the plan. But the therapy sessions had different effect for Ashley, Toni, and Alette. They all kind of felt sad because of this since they were having flashbacks from all the memories they have gone through in the past. A year has already passed, but still, no progress can be seen in Ashley's case. One day, Dr. Patterson visited the hospital together with Miss Victoria Aniston and her daughter, Katrina; they are his new family. Dr. Patterson told Dr. Lewison a story that he said could be of help to Ashley. He said that her wife had an elderly cousin over there named John and he told Dr. Lewison that this person molested Ashley when she was young. Dr. Lewison then immediately told Dr. Keller about this. While Ashley is outside, she saw her father playing with Katrina. She started to act not normal. She began to scream and she can't be stop. It took half an hour for Ashley to be calm and that's when they were just able to have a conversation with Ashley to know what is the reason she acted that way earlier. While they are talking to Ashley, Toni suddenly appeared and she answered for Ashley. She told that Ashley is afraid he's going to do to the little girl what he did to her. Then, Toni and Alette began narrating what had happened that night in London and how they were born. The truth is, Ashley was raped by her father.

Chapter 26 The truth behind the real reason why Jim Cleary, Dennis Tibble, and Richard Melton got killed by Ashley's alter, Toni, unfolds. Dr. Keller held a hypnotherapy session, and that's when he was able to talk with Toni and Alette. They are the ones who knows what truly had happened from those times. Toni and Alette told him that all of those men raped her. Toni was reminded of what Dr. Patterson did to Ashley when she was just young, and she wasn't able to stand it. The fact that Ashley was currently being raped by those men at that moment, and she was also having flashbacks of the trauma she got from her father as well. It made Toni do that thing to protect Ashley from everything.

Chapter 27 The truth behind the murder of two other men, Jean Claude Parent and Deputy Sam Blake, who also got killed by Toni, unfolds as well. It was told that these two men also raped Ashley. Same thing happened to them. Toni also killed them because of the teribble thing they did to Ashley. At that moment, Dr. Keller made Ashley, Toni, and Alette talk with one another, and that's when the progress started to be visible. The progress became consistent and eventually, Ashley were finally cured.

Chapter 28 Even though Ashley is finally cured, she still needed to be checked by the doctors to see if how she's doing. Otto Lewison had three psychiatrists examine Ashley. They interviewed Ashley about the thing she feels towards the things happened to her.

Chapter 29 The day when she can finally step outside the place where she spent lots of her time to get treated from her illness has finally come. Ashley faced a very hard situation for the past years; from what she experienced to her childhood, to the things she have gone through to her adulthood. Ashley finally got the happy ending she deserves.
