MESSAGE “When the CHURCH looks Msgr. Francis Kolencherry for JESUS, she always knocks at his mother’s Vicar General door and asks: Syro-Malabar Eparchy of St Thomas. It is from MARY that the Seeing his mother and the disciple he loved standing CHURCH learns true discipleship. near her, Jesus said to his mother, ‘Woman, this is your That’s why CHURCH always goes son’. Then to the disciple he said, ‘Behold your mother’. out on mission in the (John 19: 27) For this precious moment, the mother of footsteps of MARY”. God took her eyes off her son Jesus and gazed upon John, her new child in grace. John, the beloved disciple -POPE FRANCIS who remained close to Jesus throughout the suffering and death, stayed with our blessed mother as she stood before the cross. John then lovingly looked upon his new mother. This act of giving and receiving was not only meant for our blessed mother and John, but it was also meant for all of us. We are all called to be at the foot of the cross in the person of John the beloved disciple. Jesus looks at us from the cross and says, ‘Behold your Mother’. Jesus from his infinite love and mercy directs his dear mother to turn toward each one of us with love and compassion as her own precious child in each one of us. Our blessed mother is the mother and queen of the ‘Love Kingdom’ and new family of God. If we really want to be a member of this Love Kingdom, we must love and accept our Blessed Mother Mary. Let us embrace her as our own and of course, blessed mother in turn would take us as her own and lead us to her son Jesus, our Lord. As we are traditionally, in the month of the Rosary, with all the affection of our hearts and the full submission of our minds to the truths of our holy Faith, we repeat the Church’s familiar words in praise of the Mother of Jesus: Blessed be the great Mother of God, Mary most holy. Blessed be her holy Immaculate Conception. Blessed be her glorious Assumption. Blessed be the name Mary, Virgin and Mother. Blessed Virgin Mary, pray for us! My loving Jesus, I totally put my Trust in you! 3

REPORT PARISHDIARY JULY - OCTOBER 2021 8 During the last quarter the parish was drastically impacted by COVID pandemic and its unpredictable nature. Many parish events had to be cancelled or postponed multiple times. Despite these challenges, by the grace of divine providence, the parish was able to continue some of its important activities. SANTHOM INSIGHTS The parish published the first edition of its own magazine Santhom Insights on the 3rd of July 2021. The magazine was well-received by the wider community in South East Queensland, especially among the Malayalee Christian communities. Combining with the online distribution we were able to reach out to about 8000 people with the first issue. We thank all the teams working under this project making it a success story of the parish. CATECHISM SEMESTER EXAM Despite COVID restrictions, the Parish was able to continue the faith formation of Children uninterrupted through flexible delivery - both online and face to face as logistically possible. Hence it was a notable achievement that Sunday School was able to conduct the semester exams on 10th July 2021. Exam results suggested that though there was some decline in overall performance, most of the students were able to keep up with the learning. Parish would like to acknowledge the commitment and hard work of teachers ensuring the continuity of this very important ministry amidst difficult circumstances. EXODUS 21 Another important achievement during this period was the commencement of Exodus -21, a ministry to facilitate ongoing faith formation of the young and adults. It is a program that helps our parents to accompany the faith formation journey of children. The first EXODUS-21 meeting was held at our church on Saturday, 12th June from 10 am – 2 pm. Rev. Fr. George Mankuzhikari (Vicar, St. Alphonsa Syro-Malabar Parish, North Brisbane) led a special session during the program. The second meeting of EXODUS-21 was held on Saturday, 17th July, and Rev. Fr Anto Chiriyankandath (Vicar, Ave Maria Syro-Malabar Mission, Ipswich) was the resource person for the programme. Each session was attended by nearly 60 members of the parish. Special sessions were conducted for kids and teens on the same days. FUNERAL OF LOTSY, CHRIS AND CATELYN Our community was shocked and horrified at the news of the tragic accident that prematurely ended the beautiful lives of Lotsy (beloved wife of Bipin) and their children Chris and Catelyn. The funeral service for Lotsy, Catelyn and Chris was held in our parish at 11.30 am on Tuesday, 10th August 2021. Let’s continue to pray for Bipin and his son as they continue to recover from this trauma and grief in their life. PARISH FEAST 2021 It was truly a blessing to have been able to successfully organise our parish feast amidst the current pandemic. The quiz, essay and speech competitions organised for kids in preparation for the feast were beneficial in helping the community to increase the knowledge of the Gospel and the life of our patron, St. Thomas the Apostle. The celebration of the feast was finally held on Sunday, the 29th of August.

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION Simon Mulangan Secretary to The Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Communion lay the Parish Pastoral Council foundations of Christian life. Hence, the preparation and reception of first Holy Communion is an important milestone in the faith formation of our Children. In spite of the restrictions of the pandemic, the parish was able to prepare 31 children (17 boys and 14 girls) for this important moment of grace in their life. The event was held on two days - 25th and 27th September. kotdmae_mÀ k`bpsS kn\\Um\\´c ]{X¡pdn¸nsâ kw£n]vXw. kotdmae_mÀ k`bpsS kn\\Unsâ 29þmw kt½f\\¯nsâ cïmw `mKw BKÌv 16 apX 27 hsc Hm¬sse\\mbn \\S¶p. k`sbbpw kaqls¯bpw _m[n¡p¶ \\nch[n hnjb§Ä kn\\Un NÀ¨m hnjbambn. FAITH STORIES Manifestation of “The greatest love story of all time is contained in a tiny white Host.” -Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen It is through the sacraments that we receive the grace of the living God. First Holy Communion 2021 was another important event in the history of St. Thomas the Apostle Syro Malabar Parish. As in the previous years, this year 33 children completed about seven months of intensive training as preparation for their special moment of grace in which 31 children received the first Holy Communion in our parish with their parents, other family members and friends. The event was held on two days - 25th and 27th September. Of course, these 31 little angels would have a lot of experiences to talk about this event. Let us read the experiences of some of them… Leah Augustine Michael Johns Joanna Joseph As I approached the day of my When I received Holy Communion, When I received my first Holy First Holy Communion, I knew I was really happy Jesus came into Communion, it was the greatest that something special was my heart. How else could you explain a man getting Therefore, I urge you all to remember our wonderful out of a cave full of hungry beasts without even a Father not just when you find yourself in a pit full scratch? And so, to quench my thirst for an answer, of lions (metaphorically and literally). Even Daniel I turned to the only primary source I had - The Holy found time to kneel down and talk to God in his Bible. You can look through the book of Daniel again every day life. and again, yet the only thing Daniel did out of the Then why can’t we? ordinary was ... nothing. Gianna Robert Literally nothing. I became aware that I’d mistaken the character of Daniel. Many people think that Daniel strode into that den without an ounce of fear in him. You’d have to be pretty daring to walk into the jaws of a lion, right? But the truth is, I believe Daniel was afraid. He was a man, a human that also faced all the doubts and fears that we face today which, keep us from reaching our full potential. I bet Daniel was more frightened than anyone could’ve ever been at that moment. But it was only when he overlooked this fear in him that he saw light in the darkness. “Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.” Daniel 6:10b (NIV) He prayed. Just as he had done since the moment he arrived at Babylon. Just as he had done when the chiefs tried to find fault in him. I don’t know what he prayed, but the important thing is that God heard him. And if God heard the prayers of this man, then why wouldn’t he listen to ours too? PARISH MINISTRY In this unprecedented time, after many changes, we were blessed to celebrate the Feast of St. Thomas , the patron saint of our parish, in the month of August. Mathruvedy would like to acknowledge the enthusiasm showed by the mothers who decorated our church and prepared ‘nercha’ to celebrate this special day. The Feast of Assumption was commemorated by Mathruvedy members differently this year by offering fruit trees and flowering plants which were planted later in the church premises. The day of Nativity of Blessed Virgin Mary was honoured in our parish with a special rosary procession and sharing of food that showed the manifestation of the love we have to our Blessed Mother. A new Mathruvedy leading team for the year 2021- 2023 was THE NEW elected. The leaders were selected by the panel consisting of the ELECTED MEMBERS elected members from the general voting and the selected ward representatives from eighteen wards. President - Deepa shojan By the grace of God, under the leadership of Fr Abraham, with the Vice President - Manju Delvy exceptional co- operation of each and every member of Mathruvedy, the leaders and the ward representatives of last two years, we Secretary - Preethi Renjith were able to serve the church for the praise and glory of God in many ways. We take this opportunity to thank each one of you who Joint Secretary - Sheela Jaison have supported Mathruvedy in the past years. Treasurer - Sheeja Judin A meeting was held on Sunday, 24 October 2021 after 9.00 am Holy Mass to handover the charge to the newly elected members. We are Parish Council extending our support and best wishes to the newly elected team leaders and representatives for the coming years. Member - Sojet Sony Safety Officer - Rasin Augustine Commitee members - Reny Shabin & Tessy Jogy. SMYM BRISBANE SOUTH SOCCER TOURNAMENT 2021 After a lot of planning and hard work, we had our first Soccer tournament on July 17th at Toowoomba. Due to unforeseen hurdles, the date and venue of the tournament had to be changed but nevertheless Gods blessings shone brightly on the event. We had the presence of Fr Thomas Areekuzhy, other parents and youth to support us at the ground. An early start of the day, long drive and the cold weather didn’t tire any of the players but kept the spirit going towards the end for the final win. The Tournament consisted of 4 teams: Unleashed Warriors of St Joan of arc, Purple Crowns of St Philomena, Arrows of St. Sebastian, St. George Dragons; with over 40 participants. All four teams had been training very hard particularly after youth Mass on Sundays, having friendly matches and making friends. In spite of injuries, tiredness and hunger, everyone had a lot of fun. The Soccer Tournament 2021 focused on bringing new youth to increase participation and created fellowship among the youth of our parish and a lot of excitement was evident on the final day. Special thanks to Justin Alex (Sports Coordinator), rest of the SMYM team and all the players to make this a successful event. 22
