When they weren't throwing the javelin, Kilo Sumslon and Jaime Lopez fit the image of African Head Hunters Jamie Durrant \"jumped\" for joyl On Your Marks Get Set Go and their off, this years boy's track team ran their little hearts out. Senior Shawn Christensen had this to say about track. \"Track- the feeling of speed, the wind in your hair, the breaking of the tape, the glory of the win, the spewing up of the lunch after the race. These are the things that make my life complete, without track I don't feel I would have experienced the full joy of a high school career. Good Luck to the future tracksters of Hillcrest High.\" Good job Boys! Pictures by Chris Bown Kirt Nielsen measured up In every wayl BOYS TRACK/ 99

Varsity Baseball Ryan Mayne issued the call for team work. As soon as the snow started melting, thoughts tum to America's favorite past time: baseball, and Hillcrest is no exception to that rule. Even before the ground is uncovered though, players are downstairs in the gym batting and warming up their arms for the upcoming season. This year's team, under new varsity coach Craig Haslip, is young, but promising and talented. There's a lot of Senior support and encouragement for the juniors and sophmores on the team. Practices were held every day after school, as each individual player strengthened his batting, running, hitting, and catching abilities, and as all those players together became a winning team. Coach Haslip felt that he had a solid team, both offensively and defensively. He also felt that they would, \" find themselves in the state tournament.\" As a whole, the team displayed a positive outlook for their success, as they were determined to use their potential. Robbie Andrews summed it up best by saying, \"They laughed at our record last year, but this year, we'll have the last laugh .\" IOO/Varsity Baseball 1st Row L-R: Mike Bowlden . Junior Varsity Baseball Although thejunior varsity team didn't get the recognition and the fame that the varsity team received, they were just as important. Practicing just as hard and just as long as the varsity play- ers, the J.V. team learned, and gained the ex- perience needed to advance their playing abili- ties and knowledge. Some young members played for the varsity team, and all hope to be on the varsity team in years to come. Their po- tential was high and success was inevitable for the Hillcrest Junior Varsity Team. Were Robbie Andrews and partner avid bird watchers or a catcher and an umpire waiting for the play? Danny GOing awaited the ball at home plate. l02/J .V. Baseball

Pam Severe is just bouncing around at an early morning practice. Brook Kontgis struts her stuff on the beam. This year our gymnastics took state for the 4th time in a row. No other school in the state has ever had such a record. Eleven out of the eighteen gymnasts were seniors. Janica Hayes, Megan Fenton, and Heidi Granere were the top three seniors in the state and went on to compete in the nationals. The entire team worked hard and had many early morning practices which really paid off in the end. We would like to give a special thanks to the team coach Mechele Bosco for her many hours of hard work. Page by; Tricia Grangroth. This year had surely been a turn around for the softball team with a striking new coach and an all star line up. The tryouts, had the best turnout in softball's history here at Hillcrest. The team consisted of mostly sophomores and freshmen. Only a few from last years team were kept. such as, Christine Axtel, Stephanie Greensides, Stacie Reynolds, Casey Elder, and Kim Wilson. l06/Softball

But, we were able to get these shots of them in their drudgerous hours of practice. They are learning techniques from their new coach, Larry Wilson, who coaches one of the best teams in Utah. They're going to be very aggressive, intelligent and a good offensive team. \"We have really improved a lot since last year.\" -Leesa S. No problem, right? Wrong! It is not as easy as it sounds. It takes a lot of teamwork to play soccer. As senior Kevin Webber put it, \" As long as we aren 't selfish with the ball, we will kick some butt because there are so many good players.\" Soccer also takes a lot of practice. \" Last year's defense all graduated, so this year's defense is new. But, with hard work and determination, we 'll have a good shot at taking region,\" said varsity goalie Steve Knubel. They were a great team with lots of talent and ability and great coaches.
