ACT VIT E REFLECT DIVERSION Concentration on learning was softened by the crowded laugh- ter and appreciative applause which were the sounds of diver- sion. Trembling with excitement, a tearful girl was crowned Junior Prom Queen; scrawling \"Remember the fun we had in English\" in a friend's yearbook, a sophomore recalled his first high school experiences; marching solemnly across the stage to receive his diploma, a senior performed the final act in his role at Hillcrest. Whether the tones of response were solemn or humorous, activities provided students with an outlet for creative talents and a chance for social expansion. Diligent preparation by a soloist A cappella member, a dance clubber in the Spring Concert, or a leading actor in Brigadoon was re- warded by the personal triumph of accomplishment and the pleased response of audiences. Our delight was in shared ex- periences: a cast party for Inherit the Wind, a joke on the B.Y.U. assembly, or the tranquil winter mood of the Senior Hop. Contagious animation and enthusiasm engulfed us in our activ- ities and each individual contributed to the Spirit of Hillcrest. 157

Proving their loyalty to Hillcrest, almost the entire 1967 Chamber Choir returned to sing' Mr. Frog Went A Courtin'.\" Their voices blending in an almost unbelievable fashion, John Sagen and Laury Hammel perform an off-key, off-beat parody of \"This Land Is Your Land.\" Judges Mrs. Glenna Dodge, Mrs. Loren Mark, and Mr. Pouwel Vuyk make a few last-minute compansons before choosing the winning entry in the \"Parade of Floats\" contest. 159

Involved in designing and painting scenery, fixing lights, and moving props were some thirty other students from Mrs. Glenna Dodge's Stage Design class and Mr. Duane Densley's Stage Crafts class. Coached by Mr. Pouwel Vuyk, the cast held re- hearsals before and after school for more than a month which enabled them to present a well acted, meaningful presentation to the public. In- herit the Wind, taken from the quotation \"He who troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind,\" was presented last November 29th and 30th to students and parents at Hillcrest High School. OPENING DAY ASSEMBLY In welcoming Hillcrest Huskies back to school, soft-spoken Pat Knibbe challenged the student body to meet a successful year and participate in school activities from \"the first kickoff to the last strikeout.\" Filled with an introduction of new teachers, a songleader routine, songs and dances, and an anticipation of events to come, the Opening Day Assembly left each Huskie with a determination to make \"The Year to Meet the Challenge\" a working success. Opening Day Assembly finds an enthusiastic student body ready to start a new year of school. SPIRIT ASSEMBLY Tricycle-riding contests, a medicine ball tournament, and a water- soaked tug-o-war, were typical of the activities participated in by students and teachers at the Spirit Assembly. Generating spirit and enthusiasm for the football game with Judge, the assembly held in October also provided an opportunity for a change in the pace of the regular school day. Topping off the day's events was a powder puff football game, which depicted members of the Pep Club as players in a mock game between Hillcrest and Judge. Using tricycles as an added challenge, representatives from the speech department defeat the music department in a medicine ball game re- fereed by Mr. Del Mar Schick. Dressed in oversized jerseys, the members of the Pep Club wait for the signal to begin the powder- puff football game. 162

B.Y.U. ASSEMBLY Nearly forty Brigham Young University students came to Hillcrest to present the1r annual traveling assembly last November. Sketches of people from various countries set the background for ballroom dancers, comedian singers, and a ventriloquist. By running up the aisles and shaking hands with students, they cl1maxed the assembly with patriotic songs sung against a background of florescent pictures of American soldiers and the American flag. Poised at rigid attention, the team wa1ts for the drum major' s shrill whistle before moving into a precis1on movement. Although the team consisted of twenty-five mem- bers, only twenty-one musicians and their drum major took part in the drill. Their fifteen bugles, five drums, and a cym- bal created a rhythmic beat that filled the gym with sound. Hillcrest students, the only student body in the state to hear this musical group, gave them a standing ovation. FOOTBALL ASSEMBLY Receiving a standing ovation from the student body, mem- bers of the football team were individually honored at the assembly held last October. Superintendent Beckstead, Coach Pearce, and co-captain Brent Sorensen delivered speeches praising the team for their success in winning first place in Division Two. After receiving a boutonniere from the cheerleaders and songleaders, each member marched from the auditorium through an archway of green and white flashing pompons formed by the Pep Club. 163

BRIGADOON Work on Brigadoon began last December with the casting of leads and the building of flats, backdrops, and props. Rehearsals began in January, and extend- ed through February and March, with practices before and after school. Chosen for its variety of enter- tainment, Brigadoon offered parts for one hundred- six people in singing, dancing, and dramatic roles. Playing three nights to four thousand people, the two tho usand dollar production boasted life-like scenery, authentic costuming and a professional bag piper's group. SENIOR HOP Centered around the theme \"The Dawn of Winter,\" the Senior Hop, held on December 16, portrayed a winter wonderland of glimmering icicles and wintry forest scenes. These decorations added the finishing touch to the dance to create just the right atmos- phere for the Silos, a professional group who pro- vided musical entertainment for the evening. By pop- ular vote the Senior Class selected Susan Brennan as snow queen and Allyson Clawson and Robyn Samuelson as her two attendants to reign over the Hop festivities. CHRISTMAS Becky Urry watches the frenzied Christmas shoppers Cherrie DANCE Peterson, Kevin Barnhurst, and Deylene Moffett in the opening scene of the Christmas Dance Assembly. ASSEMBLY Combining old favorites such as \"Sleigh Ride\" and \"Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer\" into a meaning- ful musical play titled \"One Little Christmas,\" Hill- crest's dance and music departments presented their Christmas Assembly last December. Based on the devotion of two children for their reincarnated mother, the play enabled students to sing and dance while gingerbread men, candy cane girls, and snow- men performed to entertain the faculty and student body. CHORAL ASSEMBLY Singing the \"Cerem~ny of Carols\" by Benjamin Brit- ten as they entered the auditorium, the Chamber Choir set a serious mood for the Christmas Choral Assembly. Joined into one group, both Junior Choirs sang Handel's \"Hallelujah Chorus,\" \"Mistletoe,\" and other Christmas songs. Numbers such as \"Carol of the Drum \" and ''T'was the Night Before Christmas\" sung by the A cappella Choir concluded the assembly. RUBINOFF ASSEMBLY Playing a medley of television commercials and a little classical music on his Stradivarus violin, Rubin- off, the world-famous violinist, kept the audience entertained and gave a preview of his evening per- formance. Talking excessively between numbers, Rubinoff told the student-body of his trip to VietNam, and that his son was an aide to General Westmore- land. UTAH Strains of 'The Sound of Music\" fill the auditorium as Rubinoff plays his one-hundred thousand dollar violin. SYMPHONY Following an intensified program to expose secon- dary school students in the Salt Lake area to the cultural aspects of classical music, the Utah Sym- phony Orchestra presented a two hour program at Hillcrest High School. Students from schools within the Jordan School District were brought in by buses on January 30 to hear classics at their best, played by the orchestra under the direction of Maestro Maurice Abravanel. Performing on a bare stage to attain better acoustical arrange- ments, the Utah Symphony, under the direction of Maestro Maurice Abravanel, plays Sousa's \"Stars and Stripes Forever.\" 169

A-WEEK Establishing an \"Association Week\" as a Hillcrest tradition enabled both the Boy's and Girl's Association to jointly combine their interests. Activities began on Wednesday with Mr. lrresistable Day, a popularity contest based on getting girls to talk to boys. Thursday was Miss lrresistable Day. At an assembly on Friday, lrresistable awards were presented to students and teachers, miss-match outfits were judged, and the dance club put on a skit. Because of a lack of snow, the scheduled snow sculpturing contest was cancelled. Con- flicting events forced the postponement of the carnival and dance, the climax of \"A-Week,\" until February 10. Mr. Kreuger, chosen as the most \" lrresistable\" member of the male faculty, admires his badge. Not knowing exactly how or where to pin the badge, Craig Grif- Dianne Halpin listens as Shauna Hansen expresses her feel- feth attempts to present Linda Clark with her Miss lrresistable ings about winning first place in the miss-match contest. aw ard. 170

TOURNAMENT WEEK During the busy week of March 4-9, the week when tournament games were being held for the top teams in the state, Hillcrest High became a hive of activity. Homeroom doors wore green and white crepe paper, slogans, balloons, big H's, and every other type of spirited paraphernalia that the students could devise. Morning pep rallies, conducted by the cheerleaders, songleaders, pep club, and pep band organized all faithful Huskies into a cheering, spirit-filled mass of exhuberance. Pep assemblies on the days of the big battles came in varied forms Hillcrest students will never forget Monday's program when faculty mem- bers, counselors, the principal, and the vice-principal were transformed into a pep band, pep club, cheer- leaders, card section, and even a Huskie mascot. Mr. Krueger's homeroom mixed up a magic potion of school spirit a Ia Shakespeare, where famous char- acters were portrayed as Huskies and their oppo- nents. YEARBOOK DAY Long-kept secrets and new additions to the Yearbook were revealed to all Hillcresters as another tremen- dous \" Hillcrest\" was presented on Yearbook Day, May 17. \"What's the cover like?\" \" How many pictures do I have in this year 's book?\" \" Are the color pic- tures neat? \" These and other questions were whirl- ing through the minds of all Huskies as they penned precious memories and feelings in the books of never-to-be-forgotten friends when the \" Year to Meet the Challenge\" drew to a close. Representing the excitement and curiosity of yearbook day/ students try to get past Karan Bond to catch a glimpse of the 1968 'Hillcrest\" in the distribution room . GRADUATION Each year, the achievement, leadership, and person- ality of Hillcrest are transferred to the Junior Class, the seniors of \"next year.\" Once we were those jun- iors, g1ven seemingly huge responsibilities. We met and su rpassecf the challenge the year offered: 1968 was Hillcrest's best. Then, as seniors, faces solemn and tear-streaked, we marched resolutely down long auditorium aisles; said good-bye to the teachers, the lriends, the routine; and were no longer part of the whole. But we left behind us tradition, example, and reflection. With this legacy, Hillcrest will continue to advance. And with the learning and growing exper- ience our school has given us, we will go forward and become involved in Life. Each of us is leaving a part of himself at Hillcrest, and we are each taking a part of Hillcrest with us. Hillcrest's last four-year class/ with its four-hllndred graduates/ is exemplified by Pauline Astorga and Ron Hatch as they leave the auditorium as graduating seniors . 182

IN CLOSING Words, shouted across a greening lawn Of the end, the goodbye ... Clamorous pleadings for victory, Flushed ripples of laughter, Incessant murmurings of question, Have so long filled my mind. Now, at the end, I am surrounded By an unfrequented silence. Sensations, sun-warmed memories Of half-forgotten days ... Crushing into the whole at a game, Blending with glossy friends at a dance, Merging into a between-class hall, Became so much a part of my being. Now, at the end, I am submerged In an unfrequented solitude. Empty quiet ... suspended motion ... I am alone With my past actions, present decisions, And my Future. But I am a dreamer and a doer. Soon the sound and feeling Will again fill my individual existence And with acceptance, confidence, resolution, I will go forward to meet the challenge.

Betsy Arnold Ass't. Editor Mary Beckstrom Denise Anderson Ass't. Editor Editor Jeff Cartmill INTRODUCING Ass't. Editor Next year's staff organization introduces an innovation necessitated by a growing studentbody's interest 1n extracurricular and academic activities. As Hillcrest branches out into departmentalized projects and new competitive sports, better organization within the yearbook staff is required to keep pace with these changes. For this reason, the former tradition of one assistant editor has been expanded to include three assistant editors, each to be in charge of accumulating particular information covering the year's activities. Denise Anderson will, as main editor, have the responsibility of selecting the cover, form, and theme of the yearbook, as well as composing layouts, supervising the overall appearance of the book, and regulating the assignments of individual staff members. She will look at thousands of pictures, read tens-of-thousands of words, wear out dozens of pencils, and spend close to a thousand hours of planning, worrying, writing - all to produce the record of 1969. Assisting Denise will be Betsy Arnold, Mary Beckstrom, and Jeff Cartmill who will respectively compile the record of all clubs, activities, and sports. 191
