Event OverviewIndian economy is one of the fastest growing economies in the world with rapid urbanization. Theurban population is set to rise to more than 400 million people by 2050. It is also estimated that inthe next 15 years, the urban population will contribute nearly 75% to India’s GDP. The governmenthas identified the need for creating well planned cities that can match and foster this growth. Inlast 12 months, India has been extremely aggressive in executing its vision of setting up 100 SmartCities and the cabinet on the 29th of April 2015 has approved the Centre spending of about INR 1lakh crore (USD 15.6 Billion) on urban development under two new urban missions — Smart CitiesMission and the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) of 500 cities withoutlays of Rs. 48,000 crore and Rs. 50,000 crore respectively. The vision is to preserve our traditionalarchitecture, culture & ethnicity while we implement modern technology. These smart cities arecurrently attracting global investment, will create new job opportunities, improve communication andinfrastructure, decrease pollution and ultimately improve the quality of living. Some of the top challenges will include devising a fool-proof plan to develop smart cities, meaningful public-private partnership, increasing the renewable energy, water supply, effectivewaste management, traffic management, meeting power demand, urban mobility, ICT connectivity,e-governance, etc., while preparing for new threats that can emerge with implementation of thesenew technologies. Average age of urban population in India will be 29 years by the year 2020, makingIndia the largest youth workforce. Nispana Innovative Platforms has identified the necessity to hostthe “Sustainable Smart Cities India” to bring in national and international experts and stakeholders inthis sector to discuss the opportunities and challenges in creating smart and responsible cities andcitizens.
