in awe of him > By Courtney Donald summer ministry team leader This past school year I had been praying and seeking the Lord in what He would have me do this summer. Through prayer and an internet search the Lord brought me to Camp Tejas. I was extremely nervous and worried because I was leaving home in South Carolina and traveling 17 hours away to Texas without knowing anyone. The Lord gave me courage and I came with confdence knowing that the Lord would provide and take care of me the whole time I was at camp. These past couple of months at Tejas I have grown so much in my relationship with the Lord. He has taught me to have patience with others and in His timing all things will come. I have truly sought out the Lord and what He looks like and how I want to mirror that image in my own life. I have been given the opportunity here at Tejas to be a team leader and grow in my leadership by being an example to those around me. I spend time with believers just like me, who enjoy talking about what the word of God says, and what it means to each person. Also, I have more knowledge of what the Lord wants a follower of Him to be like and the characteristics I should have. As a SMT member here at camp, I have learned the importance of scripture memory and “i have truly how I should make it a daily habit in my life. No matter what the situation is, I can always recall the truth in His sought out word to be my guide and help. I have enjoyed being able to develop lifelong friendships with the people I have worked the Lord and along with this summer through praising and serving the Lord as one body of Christ. I am forever grateful for this what he looks opportunity that the Lord has given me to spend this season in my life at Camp Tejas, and the growth I have experienced like and how i through the amazing discipleship program here. I will take back home with me my experience and remember that the want to mirror Lord will always provide and never leave me to stand alone, but will be my strong hold through the good and the bad that image in times. I have to just trust in Him and have faith that could move a mountain, because He created me and the Lord my own life.” wants to use me to teach others of His goodness through me. Summer (CamP) humility through Service > By Scott Daugherty recreation intern Perhaps our greatest asset and the one thing that we cannot obtain more of is time. Thus, whatever we spend our time on is the biggest indicator of what we value most, such as when we decide to spend our time with the ones we love most. If time is the biggest indicator of what we value, then what we spend our summer doing will show us where our hearts lie. Many people will spend their summers serving themselves by pursuing self-benefting acts of pride. However, Christ has called us as Christians in Mark 8:24 that “whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.” One of Christ’s biggest prerequisites for His leadership to be bestowed upon us, his followers, is that we must deny ourselves. We must give up our desires, plans, and image by humbling ourselves with the knowledge that His purpose is incorruptible. This required me to give up my biggest asset, the summer, to follow Him by serving kids at Camp Tejas. One of Camp Tejas’ primary ministry focuses is on the campers that we directly accommodate. However, our roles as the Summer Ministry Team aren’t necessarily ostentatious. Rather, our service to the campers resembles that of support, that campers may forget about their needs to better focus on a life- changing week of camp. We scrub toilets, clean dishes, and lifeguard so that they can forget about the worries of the world and make growth in God the center of their efforts. Even though the work isn’t glamorous, the joy that propagates from seeing a smile stemming from our service resounds so much greater than anything the world may offer. >> “if time is the biggest indicator of what we value, then what we spend our summer doing will show us where our hearts lie.” > A summer camper races down the red slide at the pool. camp tejas t 3 magazine.indd 13 11/12/2009 1:15:51 pm

How do you convey that to a group gathered in an offce 150 miles from here? This particular does Camp group had been attending very nice upscale hotels for their conferences for several years and was looking for someplace new and different. Within a brief moment I looked out the large Tejas have an glass windows of the offce and took immediate notice of the large pine and oak trees gently swaying in the breeze. It was then that the image of the sign at the camp entrance fashed in environment my mind and one word stood out. Retreat! The very name we have given the season from late August through May here at the camp. to get us Most think of the word only in the sense of getting away from the daily grind of the proverbial rat race. But in this instance, it would be retreating from the objects of steel away from and concrete within the cities created by man in an effort to wow us. God, in His incredible love, has given us His creation not only to admire and enjoy, but also to foster that intimate our daily relation He desires with us, and to remind us that He is the Creator. Psalm 23:2 tells us that “He makes us to lie down in green pastures and leads us beside still waters.” He actually routines draws us to His creation through the beauty and wonder of it, if we take the time to allow it. Verse 3 of the same chapter begins by telling us “He will restore our soul,” and His creation is and clear one of the methods He uses. So not only does Camp Tejas have an environment to get us away from our daily routines and clear our minds, but also to restore our relationship with God, our minds, the Creator Himself, through the beautiful setting that He has graciously given us. >> but also to restore our relationship with God.” camp tejas t Magazine.indd 15 11/12/2009 1:15:57 PM

Group (VOLunTeer) What a Volunteer year serving > By mike newton facilities director with heart What a year! Our frst year at the & camp has been flled with learning and progress. Since moving to soul the camp, I’ve been amazed by the scale of the construction and remodeling projects that get done around here. Large things happen fast. If you come to the camp at least annually, you can’t help but notice that we are continually growing. Improvement to existing structures and new facility construction is frequently under way. We do a good job, too. But, we don’t do all of it. We don’t even do half, really. The labor of some very special folks we call volunteers is evident in everything we offer our guests. “The labor of Retreat, for many, has so much to do with what we see around us. The ability to relax in mind is infuenced, in large part, by what we see. These servants are making a tremendous difference in some very what our guests see. It would be diffcult to have a conversation with someone about the growth of Tejas without mentioning volunteers. These projects would be obstacles without the skill and special folks we sacrifce of organizations such as the Texas Baptist Men, Mobile Missionary Assistance Program (MMAP), Campers on Mission, Roving Volunteers in Christ’s Service (RVICS) and SOWERS. These call volunteers folks descend upon Camp Tejas during the retreat season like a small swarm of bees and things start is evident in happening. This past retreat season, with the help of volunteers, we were able to complete the construction of everything the frst house in our off-site staff housing plans. So many other things have been done to improve the appearance of the camp in the short time I’ve been here. From paint at Four Seasons to outdoor we ofer our lighting and sprinkler systems across the Meadows Retreat Center; from repaired masonry at the main camp to trash can covers campus-wide. guests.” The transient nature of their service -moving from one project to the next and spending so much time away from home- is inspiring to me. I hope that I have the energy and means to serve in this way if the opportunity comes. Thank you, volunteers.
