Faith in the >> Darkness By Nerys James, SMT International Team Leader >> “Sometimes The dark can be a scary place to be. However, one thing God has been teaching me is that sometimes, God will being in the darkness is a great gift. Psalm 42:8 says, “Each day, the Lord pours His unfailing love upon me, and take us to through each night I sing His songs, praying to God who gives me life.” Therefore, we have no reason to fear. Today our darkest we have become too consumed with doubt, worry, and insecurities, all of which lead us away from God. If we change our perspective and reach out to Him in the dark moments, as Psalm 121 teaches us, then the darkness is often the places as it is place we see Him most clearly. Just like worshiping in the back of a truck under the stars at eleven o’clock at night, there that we sometimes God will take us to our darkest places as it is here that we become most humble -- being on bended become most knee to our God who provides. So look for the light. Whether it is a guitar in a truck, the moon at midnight, or humble.” continual prayer, the light is there. We simply have to be willing to look for it and be open to receive its glory. 6 pages 2010 904771 Camp Tejas Mag.indd 6 11/8/10 12:24:32 PM

The Hope of a New Beginning, The Hope of a New Beginning, plus, old experiences plus, old experiences By Scott Daugherty, SMT Rec Supervisor >> Nostalgia keeps attacking me as my inevitable end at Tejas approaches the horizon. If my time at Tejas can be compared to a solstice, then I would be in the winter’s coldest chill, gazing upon the past season’s experiences and missing the summer’s warm embrace. This is perhaps due to the fact that I have one week left before I leave the place that I have invested deeply in for the better part of the past four summers. But, just as we have the choice to defne a glass as either half-full or half-empty, Christ is asking me whether or not I would like to defne this last week as flled with cold nostalgia or full of warm, uplifting, and encouraging hope. And I’m going to choose the hope! Not only have I found that there is warmth in this hope, but I have also discovered that this hope is contagious! Let me try to explain. When involved with ministry at the State School in Giddings, we weren’t able to take anything either in or out of the facility, except for the experiences that we received. In that light, I have learned that the friendships, character, and understanding that are built through those experiences are the only things that I will always be able to take with me, no matter my physical state. Thus, those are the blessings from God that I will treasure most. That is the hope that I am trying to explain. Just as the word hope is the instrument that I used to give continuity between these two paragraphs, the experiences that I undergo are the links that God uses to join one chapter of my life to the other. There were friend- ships that were developed that had massive impacts on my life and I on theirs that will last for eternity. Yes, that’s right, eternity! They have pushed me to build character and shared understanding that I will be able to take into the Kingdom of Heaven. If eternity starts now, then start investing into human accounts where moth and rust don’t destroy. It is said in Ecclesiastes 3:1 that, “To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.” Then Paul says in Philippians 1:25 that his purpose to remain on earth was for others because he decided to “remain and continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith.” So, even though my time at Tejas is coming to an end, the purpose to which I strive towards will follow me wherever I may wander, that I may invest in others because of His grace. And, even though it will look diferently, the great thing about a solstice is that the summer is coming again! And the great thing about Jesus Christ is that my story never has to end. That is my hope. What is yours? 8 pages 2010 904771 Camp Tejas Mag.indd 8 11/8/10 12:24:37 PM

Summer CAMP Far from Distraction >> By Jenifer Bernstein, Sagemont Baptist Church This summer, I had the privilege to come back to Camp Tejas as a leader for my church’s 7th grade retreat. This was a very special time for our church. We usually do high school camp there every year, but this year God had diferent plans for us. The opportunity to take a younger class, the 7th graders, LAZY RIVER PHOTO was incredible. Aric Harding, our worship leader, would open us up with some great worship. Then, Scott Condict, our youth pastor, got a chance to preach from the Word. God didn’t wait until the last night of our retreat to move. Our frst night of small group, girls began to open up. I also really enjoyed our cabins at The Meadows. Our small group’s room was connected to another group’s room, which made it very easy to have long, late night chats with the girls and see what they all had to say about camp and the message for “Camp Tejas is a great the night. It was an over- place to get away, get whelming joy to be a part of into God’s word, and have God’s will for these girls’ lives. Each morning, we would have a great time with fellow a devotional time where Scott believers and friends.” would give us a passage and pose pretty basic questions so that the students could individually go deeper and challenge themselves to learn more. My small group told me that they loved this idea. It was the foundation for how they could continue their quiet times and stay in the Word once they got home. By the end of our week, the students did not want to leave; they loved it. Camp Tejas is a great place to get away, get into God’s Word, and have a great time with fellow believers and friends. I have been to Tejas every summer since my 8th grade year. As I’m going of to college this fall, it’s awesome to see the students’ faith become their own, as mine did. Tejas is a great place to just get away from the everyday things, like our usual group of friends, our phones, and our iPods. Getting away from those distractions helps us focus on God and give Him our full attention. Being a leader at Tejas this summer was awesome. God has challenged me to build relationships with the younger class within our church and has shown me that leadership is a part of glorifying Him. I look forward to what God has in store for my life and the lives of the students who attended the 7th grade retreat at Camp Tejas. camp tejas t 11 904771 Camp Tejas Mag.indd 11 11/8/10 12:24:45 PM

Summer CAMP More Than Works >> by Esther McClure, media intern >> One evening during SMT training I heard someone say, “It’s so hard to act like a lady at Tejas.” I thought about that for a minute and realized it’s absolutely right. The SMT work very hard all day and spend a lot of time outside. Girls usually wear t-shirts and shorts and hardly anybody wears make-up (it all eventually sweats of anyway, so we really don’t wear any on a regular basis). But, aside from the external, it’s even difcult to feel like a lady on the inside. We’re usually running around on important errands, so it seems a bit unnecessary to take the time to let a gentleman open the door for us and say “thank you” to him. As I thought about that statement, I realized it could just as easily have been “It’s so hard to act like a Christian in the world.” We get so busy accomplishing important things – helping build houses, feeding the hungry, donating clothes and money to charities – that we forget the importance of acting like a Christian while we’re doing these things. It may seem a bit unnecessary to be patient with the clumsy guy on the house-building team (his dropping the hammer on that other guy’s hand didn’t help with the building process at all), or to be kind to the girl who tries to come back for more food one too many times in the soup kitchen line (there’s no doubt she’s hoarding food for herself and there are other hungry people here). But we have to step back and look at the bigger picture. We can do good deeds all day and accomplish real earthly good, but if we don’t do our works in a Christ-honoring way, we’re not helping the Kingdom of Heaven. Come back to the smaller picture for a moment. It may seem unnecessary for us girls to let a guy open the door for us or carry a heavy box when we are perfectly capable of doing these things for ourselves, but it’s important for us to be examples, to the male SMT and to anyone else who might be around, of gracious godly ladies. People at Tejas come from all over the world and from every sort of home-life. For some of the people here, the female SMT may be the only true example of a godly lady they are ever exposed to. It’s important that we show them what a lady is re- ally like. In the same way it’s important that we show the world what a Christian is really like. At camp, we can work hard without acting like ladies (or gentlemen in the guys’ case) and actually accomplish things that are very helpful to Camp Tejas. In the “real world,” we can do the same thing. We can do wonderful things without showing that we are Christians and no one will know the diference. People will have houses, food, and cloth- ing whether we provide them as Christians or just as nice people. But we may be those people’s only opportunity to see Christ. The word Christian literally means “little Christ.” If we behave like Christ in the world, we’ll accomplish good things not only for life right now, but for eternity as well. camp tejas t 13 904771 Camp Tejas Mag.indd 13 11/8/10 12:24:50 PM

Westbury LAKEHOUSE Westbury Lakehouse by Mike Newton Facilities Director As 2009 came to a close, Camp Tejas was preparing to start construction on the Westbury Lake House. This new retreat spot would sleep 24 in the retreat season and 32 as a bunkhouse in the summer. With doors between the rooms in a similar Retreat Season fashion to Four Seasons, the private rooms would become a communal space. It would breathe new life into the Tejas side of the camp and bring the aesthetic taste of the Meadows Retreat Center to a four room bunkhouse sitting on the water in view of the Marmax Conference Center. There was much work to be done and, as usual, retired volunteers would be shouldering the bulk of the labor. We had already emptied about six feet of water from the lake, and set seventy piers that would support the structure. Now, the volunteers would show up and work their magic. As always, I would meet with the volunteer coordinator on the Friday prior to starting the project. I remember a good, long conversation with a 79 year-old volunteer named Bill Lehman who had come to the camp with his crew of SOWERs. Those volunteers are good for a long conversation. They have some good stories that draw your attention to our God and bring Him glory. After some time was spent listening to me carry on about Camp history, he began to share about growing up As with the myriad of color variations that are utilized in the décor of facilities here in a little town called Berne, Indiana. THE DINING HALL EXPANSION The dining hall expansion will be the largest single construction project in our history. including the porches, it will be over 20,000 square feet. The total dining area will seat over 400 people in fve diferent air conditioned seating areas. A tower with stairs will rise up in the middle giving guests the ability to eat at tables over 50 feet in the air and look out over the surrounding landscape. The lower level provides multi-use areas for conference, extra dining, over-fow sleeping, and storage. We will also be expanding the drink service area, kitchen, food storage, and cleaning areas. >> The expanded dining hall will change the landscape of the camp and meet a signifcant need. The current dining hall can seat about 175 people inside. Our retreat weekends average over 200 guests and the summer camps average over 400 campers. as we continue to grow, so does our need for more dining areas and space for fellowship.
