2 HANDLING THE MOUSE AND KEYBOARD Hey Gini, can you Sure Clicko, I do tell me what the remember! They are main parts of a computer are? Monitor, CPU and Keyboard. Let Us Start Gini forgot to mention one of the main parts of the computer. It is also called a pointing device. We can give input to the computer with the help of this device. Let Us Do 1: Can you remember the name of the device? Name and draw the device in the space below. 12 14-12-2017 16:51:53 JSNR_181310002-_BGM_CSGK-G2-Integrated Book-Computers+GK-FY_WK_Text.pdf 18

Yes, Clicko, Now I Gini, we will remember all the parts discuss the mouse of a computer. Look at the keyboard. It has so many keys and keys on the on it. What are all these keyboard here. keys used for? In this lesson We will know ‡ 'LIIHUHQWPRXVHDFWLRQV ‡ 7KHNH\\ERDUGDQGLWVNH\\V Using the Mouse The mouse is an Input device also known as a pointing device. It is used to point out the items present on the computer screen. A mouse is used to select and open programs using the pointer. When we move the mouse around, the arrow on the screen also moves around. The arrow is called the mouse pointer. The mouse is XVXDOO\\NHSWRQDÁDWVXUIDFHFDOOHGWKHmouse pad. Parts of a Mouse: Mouse pad A mouse has two buttons on the top. The button on the left-hand side is called the left button. The button on the right-hand side is called the right button. A scroll wheel is there in between two buttons. It helps us to move the cursor JSNR_181310002-_BGM_CSGK-G2-Integrated Book-Computers+GK-FY_WK_Text.pdf 19 13 14-12-2017 16:51:53

Scroll A long wire attaches the mouse to the CPU. Nowadays wireless mouse (Fig. 2.2) is also available. Fig. 2.2 Wireless Mouse Let Us Do 2: In the mouse given below, mark and colour the left button Blue and right button Green. Mouse Actions Pressing the button is called a Click. Clicking these buttons tells the Computer what to do. These are called actions. There are different types of mouse actions. Let’s learn them. 1. Left Button Action ‡ L eft Click: Click the left button once. This is used to select an activity after you point to it. ‡ Double-Click: Click the left button twice, quickly. This is used to open a document or program. 14 14-12-2017 16:51:53 JSNR_181310002-_BGM_CSGK-G2-Integrated Book-Computers+GK-FY_WK_Text.pdf 20

‡ D rag: Click-and-hold a mouse button. Then move the ‘pointer’ (object) to a different part of the screen while keeping the mouse button pressed down. 2. Right Button Action ‡ Right-Click:&OLFNWKHULJKWEXWWRQRQFH'LVSOD\\VDOLVWRIFRPPDQGV 3. Scroll Wheel ‡ Scroll: Moves up and down pages. Friends! We learned the different actions in the mouse. Now, let us read the purpose for which the keyboard is used into a computer. Keys on the Keyboard The Keyboard is used to type numbers, words and symbols on the computer. The keyboard is made of several small buttons called ‘keys’. A standard keyboard has 104 keys. Each key corresponds to a number or letter or some special function. The keyboard is connected to the CPU by a wire. Fig. 2.3 Standard Keyboard 15 JSNR_181310002-_BGM_CSGK-G2-Integrated Book-Computers+GK-FY_WK_Text.pdf 21 14-12-2017 16:51:53

Let Us Do 3: In the keyboard given below color the Letters of your favorite place you visited or you wish to visit. Then write few lines about it in the space given below. There are different types of keys on a keyboard. The QWERTY keyboard was developed by Christopher Sholes in 1874. NUMERIC KEYS The number keys (Fig. 2.5) are also called numeric keys. There is a total of 10 QXPHULFNH\\V RQWKHNH\\ERDUG Two sets of numeric keys are there on the keyboard. The number keys on the right side of the keyboard are called as the Numeric Pad. All the number keys have special symbols printed on them. These keys are used for other purposes as well. Fig. 2.5 Number Keys CURSOR CONTROL KEYS A cursor is a small blinking line on the monitor. It shows the position of the next letter or number to be entered. The cursor control keys (Fig. 2.6) are also called as the arrow keys. These keys are used to move the cursor up, down, left or right. Fig. 2.6 Cursor Control Keys CAPSLOCK KEY Pressing the Caps Lock key allows you to type in capital letters. Press the Caps Lock key once again to type in lower case letters. 18 14-12-2017 16:51:53 JSNR_181310002-_BGM_CSGK-G2-Integrated Book-Computers+GK-FY_WK_Text.pdf 24

A small green light on the keyboard indicates the status (light on – Capital letters, light off – lower case letters). SHIFT KEY Shift Key is used with the other keys for different purposes. Pressing and holding the shift key along with a letter key will type that letter in the capital even when Caps Lock is turned off. For example: gives ‘A’ (when the Caps Lock is off). Also, gives ‘a’ (when the Caps Lock is on). SYMBOL KEYS Symbol keys have special signs and symbols. These are present to the right of the letter keys such as: /, “, :, <, > etc. The special characters are also placed over the numbers on the Number keys such as: !, @, #, $, %, * etc. We can use these as Symbol keys by pressing the Shift key along with the Number key. Fig. 2.7 Signs and symbols Fig. 2.8 Special Characters above numbers SPECIAL KEYS Special keys are required to perform some special functions. Some of the special keys work in combination with other keys. JSNR_181310002-_BGM_CSGK-G2-Integrated Book-Computers+GK-FY_WK_Text.pdf 25 19 14-12-2017 16:51:53
