Preface ClassKlap partners with schools, supporting them with learning materials and processes that are all crafted to work together as an interconnected system to drive learning. ClassKlap presents the latest version of the VISA NEP series. Designed specifically for CBSE schools, the VISA NEP series endeavours to be faithful to the spirit of the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2005. The VISA NEP Look and Learn textbooks and workbooks envisage language learning through concerns pertaining to the learners’ immediate environment. They recognise the potential of languages available in the classroom for the enhancement of cognitive abilities along with language proficiency and sensitivity. They also strive to ensure inclusiveness in terms of gender and diversity in representation, catering to the heterogeneous Indian classroom. The themes of the lessons are aligned with the themes recommended for English by the NCF 2005. The books are split into two parts to manage the bag weight. The VISA NEP Look and Learn textbooks and workbooks for CBSE schools offer the following features:  Interactive content that engages learners through a range of open- ended questions that build curiosity and initiate exploration of the immediate environment  Effective use of visual elements to enable learning of personal relationships, the neighbourhood, and the larger community  A focus on vocabulary building through observable materials, structures, processes and phenomena  Integrated learning of values and life skills  Promotion of participatory and contextualised learning through the engagement of all relevant stakeholders in the learning process Overall, the ClassKlap VISA NEP Look and Learn textbooks, workbooks and teacher companion books aim to enhance language acquisition through exploration of the learners’ immediate physical, social and cultural experiences. They also hope to inculcate healthy habits, skills and values among learners to help them become responsible individuals. – The Authors

The water from rain is called rainwater. rain 25

Rainwater goes to rivers, ponds, lakes, wells, streams and waterfalls. These are called water bodies. river pond lake well stream waterfall Some other water bodies are seas and oceans. They are huge. They contain a large amount of water. Rain is the main source of water. Rivers, streams, ponds, lakes and wells are sources of water. sea ocean All water bodies are sources of water for living things. • Trees get water from the rain. • Animals get water from rivers, ponds, lakes, streams and waterfalls. • We get water from wells, rivers, lakes, tap water pipeline ponds and waterfalls. Water from these sources come through the taps and pipelines in our houses. 26

Some rainwater flows into the rivers water spring and streams. The water from the river goes borewell or tube well to the seas and oceans. Some rainwater collects over the ground to form lakes and ponds. Some water goes under the ground as groundwater. Sometimes, it comes out in the form of water springs. To use the water stored under the ground, we dig wells, borewells and tube wells. Train My Brain well 1) Name any one natural source of water. 2) Name any one artificial source of water. Sometimes, the water hand pump looks clean to our eyes. But it may have germs in it. 28

To use this water boiling water water filter water purifier for drinking, we need to boil it first. Boiling makes the water fit to drink. Nowadays, water purifiers are used to make water fit for drinking. Be Amazed Did you know that the salt we use at home is got from sea water? I Explore (H.O.T.S.) People in the olden days made houses near the water sources because there were no taps, wells or hand pumps. Only natural sources of water were there. Then they started building artificial sources like wells, taps and pipelines. Today also, some places have very few sources of water. In these places, every day people walk to faraway places to get water for daily use. Water is not easily available to them. women bring water from faraway places Water, Water, Everywhere 29
