7 Julia’s Wonderful Find Reading The Fishermen Birds A kingfisher is a bright-coloured bird that has fish for its food. There are almost 90 kinds of kingfishers across the world. They usually live next to rivers or lakes. Most kingfishers are small birds with a sharp beak. They are colourful birds with blue feathers on their back and orange feathers on their bellies. Some kingfishers have a crest too! A kingfisher’s nest is called a ‘burrow’. These burrows are usually found next to lakes and rivers. Like all of us, kingfishers love to stay close to their place of work. To catch fish, they lazily fly over the water, swooping down to spear a fish with their sharp beaks. Sometimes they perch on a branch near a river and dive when they see a fish. Kingfishers who stay in cold countries usually migrate to places like India in winter. They love to stay warm and enjoy their dinners with fish. The kingfisher is called Ramchiriya in Hindi. William Henry Davies, an American poet, wrote a beautiful poem called ‘The Kingfisher’. It begins like this: It was the Rainbow gave thee birth, And left thee all her lovely hues; It means that the kingfisher was born from the rainbow, and it is the rainbow that makes it so colourful. 12 Ascend G2 English G&C Part 2.indb 12 7/19/2023 6:19:40 PM

9 Born Free Reading Lions Made Him King Once upon a time, somewhere in Africa, there lived a king called King Konaté. He was a mighty king, but he had no prince who could become the king after he died. Then, he had a vision. It was said by the angel who appeared in his vision that if he married the woman who looked like a buffalo, he would have a son as mighty and majestic as a lion. The king looked far and wide for a buffalo-like woman he could marry. Finally, he married a woman called Sogolon. She gave birth to Sundiata, but he was born crippled and unable to walk. Though the king loved him much, both Sogolon and Sundiata were heartlessly mocked for his disability. One day, Sundiata had had enough. He made up his mind to walk and, miraculously, he did. Sundiata then became strong and was recognized as a leader among his people. His cousin Tourman and his aunt Sassouma hated him. They thought once King Konaté died, they would rule over his kingdom. Ascend G2 English G&C Part 2.indb 29 29 7/19/2023 6:19:56 PM
One day, the old king died. Many thought that Tourman and Sassouma had used dark magic to kill him. Fearful that they too would be killed, Sogolon took Sundiata and the rest of her children and fled into exile, leaving the kingdom in a great mess. The people of the kingdom were soon forced to obey a neighbouring king who was heartless and evil. Meanwhile, Sundiata and Sogolon reached a deep forest full of wild animals. They made friends with those animals, and even the lions obeyed Sundiata. They thought he was their prince too! In need of their true leader, the people sent word for Sundiata to return and take his rightful place as the king. Sundiata built an army—it was an army of lions and of soldiers from smaller kingdoms who wanted to help this special prince. Finally, he attacked his own kingdom. His army was something the cruel king had never prepared for. Sundiata won the war. He was, then, made the king of this African kingdom which is now called Mali. –Adapted from an episode in African history 30 Born Free Ascend G2 English G&C Part 2.indb 30 7/19/2023 6:19:56 PM
