Language in Use Contractions Read the following conversation: Clara: It’s a beautiful day! Come, we’ll go on a picnic. Alia: That’s a good plan, but I don’t have my bicycle. Clara: Oh! Notice that, while speaking, we shorten words by joining or combining some of them. Another word for shortening is 'contraction'. So, a contraction is a shorter way of saying words.
