The word than is often used after the adjective of comparison when comparing two things. We add -est to adjectives when we use them to compare three or more things in a group. The -est form of the adjective describes the person or the thing that has the most or the least of a particular quality. Examples: tall taller tallest high higher highest We learnt about adjectives with which we add more to compare two things. We add most to such adjectives when we use them to compare three or more things in a group. Examples: • My watch is expensive. • Sue’s watch is more expensive. • Jill’s watch is the most expensive. We write the before most or the –est form of the adjective when we use it to compare three or more things. The Cat on the Dovrefell 7 Ascend G3 English G&C Part 2.indb 7 7/21/2023 6:13:41 PM

7 Androcles and the Lion Reading King Midas and the Donkey’s Ears Many long years ago, Pan, the god of shepherds, challenged Apollo to a musical competition. Pan said that his flute could produce better music than the God Apollo’s silly harp. The two agreed on a match. King Midas was to be one of the judges. After hearing the two melodies, all except King Midas selected Apollo as the winner. King Midas liked Pan’s music more. Very angry that anyone could like an ordinary flute to his musical instrument, Apollo said, “I know what’s wrong! It’s your ears. They are so tiny that you cannot hear well enough. I will fix them for you!” King Midas felt his ears shake. His ears grew and grew and turned into the large, furry ears of a donkey. King Midas was shocked. He looked at his ears in horror “Pan, help me!” he cried. But Pan ignored his request. King Midas tried his very best to hide his ugly ears from his people by wearing different hats, caps, Ascend G3 English G&C Part 2.indb 13 13 7/21/2023 6:13:45 PM
and stylish scarves. The only person who knew what his ears really looked like was his barber. King Midas made his barber promise to keep his donkey’s ears a secret. The barber tried to keep the secret. But it was making him very uncomfortable. Finally, the barber climbed high on a hill and went to the edge of a cliff. He dug a hole in the middle of some plants. He looked over his shoulder and made very sure that no one was listening. Then, he whispered softly into the opening of the hole, “Our King Midas has the ears of a donkey. King’s donkey ears! King’s donkey ears!” Having told his secret to the plants he felt much better. He returned home, certain that he had not broken his promise. However, the barber had dug right into Echo. Echo was a magical creature who lived in the mountains. She repeated the words spoken by others many times. She was all over the hilly countryside. Echo began whispering over and over, “King’s donkey ears, king’s donkey ears.” Sounds can be heard easily across the hills, even soft whispers. Very soon the entire kingdom knew King Midas’s secret!. 14 Androcles and the Lion Ascend G3 English G&C Part 2.indb 14 7/21/2023 6:13:46 PM

Old Miss Polly pulled her spectacles down over her nose and looked over them about the room; then she put them up and looked out under them. “Well, till I get hold of you I’ll –” She went to the open door and stood in it and looked out among the tomato vines and weeds that grew in the garden. No Tom. She raised her voice and shouted - “Y-o-u-u TOM!” There was a slight noise behind her and she turned just in time to catch a small boy who was running to escape. 36 7/21/2023 6:14:03 PM Ascend G3 English G&C Part 2.indb 36

Look behind you, aunt!” The old lady whirled round and snatched her skirts out of danger. The boy fled on the instant, scrambled up the high board-fence, and disappeared over it. His aunt Polly stood surprised a moment, and then broke into a gentle laugh. So the boy’s playing naughty again! Always playing tricks on me.
