Language in Use Singular and plural nouns We have learned how to make plural nouns by adding -s to singular nouns. We have also seen how to make plural forms for nouns ending in 's', 'o', 'x', 'z', 'ss', 'sh' and 'ch' by adding -es. Singular Plural Singular Plural a teacher three teachers a bus two buses a potato ten potatoes a bench nine benches Singular Singular Plural a quiz Plural a box five boxes a bush six quizzes a glass seven glasses four bushes However, there are a few nouns that do not change at all in the plural. You have to understand from the sentence whether one or many are being spoken about. Examples: There is a sheep in the field. There are two sheep in the meadow. In the first sentence, 'a' sheep is spoken about. This means there is only one sheep. Here, sheep is singular. In the second sentence, there are 'two' sheep. Here, more than one sheep is mentioned. So, it is a plural noun in the second sentence. Examples: There are three fish in the pond. Eight deer are grazing near the river. 16 2/22/2017 2:23:54 PM 51603505_BGM_1010023-Alpine-G3-ConceptMax-English-Part1_text_Correction page 22-2-2017 n.pdf 1

Grammar Parts of a sentence — subject, verb and object A sentence has three parts. Sentence Subject Verb Object What or whom Shows the It is the bearer the sentence activity/action of of the action or is about. It is the thing/person somebody who the subject. does the action. who is acted upon. Let’s identify the subject, verb and object in a few sentences. Sentence Subject Verb Object The snake caught the frog. The snake caught the frog. The children are singing songs. The children are singing songs. He was playing the guitar. He was playing the guitar. The students wear uniforms. The students wear uniforms. Subject-verb agreement Read the following sentences: • He cook dinner for his family. • Your sister talk too much. • The girls walks to college everyday. • The children swims well. You will notice that all these sentences, seem silly. They just do not sound correct! Identify the subjects and the verbs in these sentences. You will find that they do not go together. 38

Remember: In a correct and meaningful sentence, the subject should be in line with its correct verb. That means the subject and verb should agree. Rule: A singular subject takes a singular verb, while a plural subject takes a plural verb. Remember: We add an -s to make nouns plural and remove the -s to make them singular. However, with verbs, we need to add an -s to make them plural and remove the -s to make them singular. Let us now correct the sentences given above.  He cook dinner  H e cooks dinner for his family. ‘He’ is a singular subject, so the singular form of verb for his family. ‘cook’ should be used.  Y our sister talk too  Y our sister talks too much.
