Preface IMAX partners with schools, supporting them with learning materials and processes that are all crafted to work together as an interconnected system to drive learning. IMAX presents the latest version of the Maple series – updated and revised after considering the perceptive feedback and comments shared by our experienced reviewers and users. Designed specifically for state board schools, the Maple series endeavours to be faithful to the spirit of the State Curriculum Framework and National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2005. Therefore, our books strive to ensure inclusiveness in terms of gender and diversity in representation, catering to the heterogeneous Indian classroom. NCF 2005 asserts that listening, speaking, reading and writing (LSRW) are all generalised skills, and students’ mastery over them is key to success at school. All these skills frequently need to be used together. Therefore, the Maple English textbooks and workbooks strive to provide adequate opportunities for students to practise all the four LSRW skills. To this effect, the Maple English textbooks and workbooks for state board schools offer the following features:  Themes recommended by the NCF across grades 1–5 in the literature pieces  S amples of Indian writing in English as well as popular English literature pieces from western countries  P ictures for word meanings in each lesson to help students with visual clues for new or difficult words  Non-detailed lessons to enable additional reading  A speaking project and two reading comprehension passages in each unit to further hone speaking and reading skills  H orizontal and vertical progression across grades for the grammar concepts covered in the workbooks, providing a spiral of cumulative learning  Samples of format-based writing to provide for scaffolding of learning of formal writing Overall, the IMAX Maple English textbooks, workbooks and teacher companion books aim to generate greater engagement with and enhance fluency in English language communication and empower students to develop a genuine appreciation of the language and its literature. – The Authors 51704997_BGM_181910019-Maple-G3-Workbook-English-Term1_Text.pdf 2 2/14/2018 5:14:07 PM

Meher told everybody that it was hers. Read the given paragraph and underline the pronouns. Are they subject, object or possessive pronouns? You know that naming words are nouns. A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun. Let us recall the subject, object and possessive pronouns that you have learnt. Subject pronouns Object pronouns Possessive (singular) (singular) pronouns I me mine you you yours he him his she her hers it it its Subject pronouns Object pronouns Possessive (plural) (plural) pronouns we us ours you you yours they them theirs Relative pronouns • The man who was trying to cut the tree was taken to the police station. Relative Examples pronoun • M eera, who is very kind, is also my friend. who/whom (Who relates to the person being spoken about – ‘Meera, who is also my friend’.) whose which • T he girl whom you were talking to is my cousin. when (Whom relates to the girl who is also the cousin. (Where relates to the place – the playground.) • I like the dress that you gifted me for Christmas. (That refers to the dress that was a Christmas gift.) Remember: • We use who and whom for people. Use ‘whom’ when you can replace the word with ‘him’, ‘her’ or 'them'. • W hich is used while referring to things. • That is usually used for things. However, in many cases, it is also used for people or animals. • If the words that follow contain important information that is necessary for the sentence to be grammatically correct, use ‘that’. However, there are a few nouns that do not change at all in the plural. You have to understand from the sentence whether one or many are being spoken about. In the second sentence, there are 'two' sheep. Here, more than one sheep is mentioned. So, it is a plural noun in the second sentence. Grammar Irregular verbs in the past tense Sheela is playing in the garden. (The word playing tells us what Sheela is doing.) Priyan has a car. (The word has is a helping verb that means that the person ‘owns’ a car.) 'Playing' and 'has' are examples of verbs or doing words. In the English language, verbs have five forms. Base form (play, like, try) The '-ing' form Verb forms '-s', '-es', '-ies' form (plays, (playing, liking, likes, tries) trying) Past participle Past tense form (played, form (played, liked, tried) liked, tried) Usually, we can turn a word (verb) into its past tense by adding -d or -ed to its end. Such verbs are known as regular verbs. Examples: • They lived in a beautiful house. • He had cooked dinner yesterday. However, many verbs in English do not change to the past tense using the -d or -ed rule. They change themselves in different ways to their past tense forms. These are irregular verbs.
