Inside the Lab Activity 1: Same Food Items Go Together We have learnt about the different components of food. Can you recollect them? They are carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals. Let us now try to group food items according to the components. You will need: five sheets of paper, pictures of different types of food items and sticky notes. You need to: a) divide the learners into five groups. b) provide each group with a sheet of paper and ask them to make five columns on the sheet. Each column will be named as a component of food, such as carbohydrates, fats, and so on. c) shuffle the pictures of food items and provide each group with an equal number of pictures. d) ask each group to identify which picture belongs under which component of food. Based on this, ask the groups to paste the pictures in the correct columns. e) remind learners that a few food items may belong to two or more components. Activity 2: Leaves Leaves Everywhere! We know that plants have leaves. Let us now collect the leaves of different plants and make a colourful leaf journal. You will need: a paper bag, chart paper, two sheets of plain paper, a pencil, an eraser and a set of coloured pencils or crayons. You need to: a) take a paper bag and collect as many types of leaves as you can. b) make sure that you pick 3–4 leaves of the same plant. c) trace the shapes of the leaves that you have collected on a chart paper. d) colour the leaves with your favourite colours.
