Inside the Lab Make sure you do these activities only with the help of a teacher or an adult. Activity A (Based on Lesson 3): Landforms 97 You will need: ● Air-drying clay ● Thick cardboard to use as a platform ● Acrylic paint of different shades (tan, grey, blue, green, and so on) ● Paintbrush ● Craft papers (brown, green) ● Scissors ● Glue ● Sand ● Dried moss/any small grass blades You need to: 1) Place the cardboard over a flat surface. Using a pencil, outline all the landforms you want to create on it. 5) After two hours, start decorating the landforms. 6) Paint the exterior of the dried landform using acrylic paint of the appropriate shades. 7) Use mixtures of brown, green and tan to make the display look realistic. Paint the lakes and rivers in shades of blue. 8) While still wet, sprinkle some sand over the tan \"beach\" and \"desert\" areas. Sprinkle dried moss or chopped grass blades over the green grassy areas of the landform. 9) Allow the paint to dry; then dust off any excess sand and moss/grass blades. 10) Using brown and green craft paper cut out models of trees and shrubs of different sizes and shapes. 11) Glue the cut-out trees around the landforms wherever required. Activity B (Based on Lesson 9): School Map You will need: ● Chart paper ● Sketch pens ● Pencils ● Ruler ● Measuring tape You need to: 1) L ist down all the important locations/facilities within your school on a paper. 2) Allot symbols of your choice to each of them. Use different shapes and colours for each location/ facility. 98 3) Identify the four directions on the chart paper you have taken. 4) On the chart paper towards the right bottom corner mark the directions using the ruler and sketches. Below it, make an index showing different symbols used in a map. 7) Now start marking different locations and facilities in the school using the allotted symbols. Mark the directions and distances of various locations and facilities from the centre spot carefully. 8) Draw the walkways connecting the different buildings if any. Activity C (Based on Lesson 13): Aam Papad You will need: ● Mortar and pestle ● Hotplate ● ● Steel vessel ● Plastic sheet ● ● Filter ● 2 mangoes ● 1 teaspoon cooking oil/ghee 1 teaspoon rock salt 4 1 ● 4 teaspoon cumin seeds powder a pinch of salt You need to: 1) Boil the mangoes along with skin in the steel vessel over the hotplate. 2) Remove the skin and cut into pieces, discarding the seed. 3) Grind it in a mortar and pass through the filter. 4) Take the pulp and mix with a little bit of salt. 5) Add rock salt and cumin powder, and mix well. 6) Cook the mix on low heat, stirring constantly. 99 51704094_BGM_9789387848931_Summit G5 Environmental Studies 1 Workbook Part 1_Text_Revised.pdf 103 Inside the Lab 3/23/2018 6:04:12 PM

7) Now take a plastic sheet and spread some oil/ghee over it. 8) Spread the pulp on it evenly. 9) Keep this on a mat and dry it out in the hot sun. 10) When the upper surface is dried, turn and dry till no moisture is left. 11) Remove from the plastic sheets.
