The World and I 5 Learning to Live Well Name: ____________________________ Section: ________________ Roll No.: ______ School: ____________________________
For teachers and parents . . . A holistic formal education must encompass not just literacy and numeracy skills, but also life skills based on social and emotional learning (SEL). Managing and maintaining relationships, dealing with problems of different kinds and managing oneself are some key social-emotional skills required in life in the 21st century. The CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning, USA) framework for systemic social and emotional learning defines SEL as: ‘… the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships and make responsible decisions’. The authors have referred to various researches conducted on SEL while designing the framework and content for the books. The World and I series by ClassKlap aims at engaging students in a way that ensures: opportunities to generate greater awareness of the self recognition of the need, and exposure to the methods of managing oneself and one’s emotions greater understanding, empathy, care and concern for others with a focus on inclusiveness inculcation of social and environmental awareness along with a sense of responsibility towards and ownership of the society and the planet All of this is done through the use of age-appropriate and engaging content which includes the use of stories, comic strips, activities, songs, poems, characters and colourful illustrations suited to the Indian cultural context. The goal of the series is to enhance young learners’ awareness of their own selves and sensitise them to the world around them so that growing up is a more joyful experience. A vital aim is to nurture them as more sensitive human beings to create a generation that is wiser and more humane. We hope teachers and parents will take an active interest in co-creating a learning environment where learners can meaningfully engage with the content of these books. We hope that the young learners will have as much fun going through these books as we had designing them. – The Authors

1 I Can Be What I Want to Be! Hello! I am Heartsy. I am going to be your friend throughout this book. I am a heart and I love to talk, tell stories and sing songs. There are so many things we want to become. We can work hard to become whatever we want. We may not always succeed, but we must try! Mora is in Class 5. She wants to become a painter but also an astronaut. She has written a few sentences about herself. I want to be a painter. I also want to be an astronaut. There are days when I want to colour. Some days I want to travel in space. People say, ‘You can’t be both!’ But I know that I can. I can be whoever I want to be! 1
Do you also think like Mora? Fill in the blanks. I want to be ____________________________________________. I also want to be a _______________________________________. There are days when I want to ______________________________. Some days I want to ______________________________________. People say, ‘You can’t be both!’ But I know that ________________ _______________________________________________________. I can be whoever I want to be! Draw who you want to be. 2
Look at the pictures given below. Now, weave a story about these pictures with your classmates. Write a short summary of the story that you made with your classmates below. _______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ 3
Think, Feel and Share You can be anything you want to be. You have to keep trying and not be discouraged by what others say. Have you ever wanted to do something but decided to not do it because others thought you should not? Share your story here. ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ 4
2 My Body Is Special Our bodies help us to do so many things. But we still want to change many things about our bodies. Have you ever thought why? 1) Has anybody ever said the following to you? You’re so short! You are really tall for your age. What are you wearing? Change it! You will look better if you did this. . . 2) These things do not help us become better versions of ourselves. Do you think we should listen to these? YES NO 3) What do you think we should do instead? Choose from the options given below. eat healthy love our bodies exercise feel sad doubt ourselves 5
Our bodies are of different shapes and kinds. Our eyes and hair are different in colour. We all look different and grow differently. However, what matters more is the kind of people we are. Let’s do an activity to see how we are all special. 1) All the students will sit in a circle and each student will get a sheet of paper. 2) Each student shall write their own name on the paper and pass it around in the circle. Each student will write something they believe is special about that student whose name is on the paper. They will then pass the paper to the next person. 3) Once the sheet completes one entire round and comes back, each student can read what their friends have written about them. You can put up your sheet in your room. It will help us remember that each one of us is special! Pledge Time Let us all take the following pledge. I will not make fun of how others look. I will keep my body healthy by eating well, exercising and sleeping well. I will not compare my body with those of others. Name: _________________ Signature: _______________ 6
3 Our New Emotions When we grow up, our bodies and minds change. We have new feelings. Sometimes, it is very difficult to explain these feelings. Always remember that everyone around you is either going through these changes or will do so soon. You are not alone! Look at the names of different emotions in the balloons below. Put a tick for the emotions that you feel nowadays. Put a star for the ones you used to feel more of earlier. happiness shame anger sadness confusion fear 7
Let’s read about Sagarika and Sam. Sagarika is in Class 5. These days, she feels a lot more confused than earlier. She goes from feeling happy and confident to angry and irritated very quickly. Sam is her classmate and best friend. He is also experiencing some changes in his body and mind. He feels shy very often. And sometimes, he feels very energetic. So, they start keeping a daily diary to write down what they feel. They talk about it with each other. Sometimes, they share their feelings with a grown-up whom they trust. You can do the same! 8
Write or draw your feelings here. 9
Think, Feel and Share The faces below show different emotions. Colour the feeling thermometers below them. The more you feel that emotion, the more boxes you should colour. excited happy angry sad confused If we know exactly how we feel, it becomes easy to talk about it. It helps us think, speak and act clearly. It also makes it easier for people to understand us. 10
4 Think Creatively We can overcome many challenges by thinking creatively. We can create new things if we are imaginative. Let us see how creative we can be! Can you make meaningful sentences using every letter of the words given below? One is done for you. DYE – __________________________________________________ WHAT – Who has a tablet? BIG – __________________________________________________ JOKE – __________________________________________________ MANGO – __________________________________________________ Now, discuss these situations with your partner. 1) Can you think of a way in which you can drink from a cup without holding it in your right hand? 2) You have a bowl with five apples. You take away three apples from it. How many apples would you have? 3) A student kicked his football ten feet. Why did the ball come back to him? 4) Some months have 31 days. Some months have 30 days. But how many months have 28 days? We can solve the above situations by thinking creatively! 11 2) You will still have five apples. Answers 4) All months have 28 days. 1) Hold the cup in your left hand. 3) The student kicked his football up towards the sky.
Think, Feel and Share Sometimes, we can deal with a situation in a better way by thinking differently or creatively. Is there any problem that is bothering you or someone around you? _____________________________________________________ Can you think of a creative way to solve it? _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ Draw your solution here. 12
5 Learning to Know Yourself There are so many things we keep learning and getting better at. One way in which we can make ourselves better is to stop and check our progress. Whenever you want to check how well you are doing at a task, this is what you can do. Here are three cards—green, blue and red. Each card shows how you feel about a task. This is easy! I I need a little I have to try can do this on more help. harder. I need my own and a lot of help. even explain it to others. You can make a list of your own tasks in the given table and colour the card in front of it in red, blue or green to check your progress. For example— knowing how to check my progress playing cricket 13
Tasks Progress Cards _______________________________ _______________________________ _______________________________ _______________________________ _______________________________ _______________________________ _______________________________ _______________________________ _______________________________ _______________________________ Ice cream for thought Do you think we should keep checking our progress? YES / NO / MAYBE Does checking our own progress make us better at our work? YES / NO / MAYBE We will become better if we stop to check our progress. We can also rethink the way we do something. 14
6 I Am the Best I Can Be While growing up, we are often not sure of what we can do. We might feel that we will not be able to complete certain tasks. This happens when we give a lot of importance to what others say and doubt ourselves. Doubts stop us from doing many things. Have you ever had any doubts about something you wanted to do? Fill in the given boxes. I wanted to But I must overcome my ________________________ doubts and do what I want ________________________ to do. Can you recall a time when you doubted yourself but everything worked out in the end? ________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ We might doubt ourselves many times but we should keep working hard to become better. 17
7 Let’s Make the Most Out of Little! Many times, we think that we don’t have enough. There are many ways to make the most out of whatever little we have. Let’s find out how Jinny and Puffy do in a competition. Jinny and Puffy are in a competition to see who uses the things given to them in the best possible way. The things that have to be shared between them equally are as follows— four mugs of water, recycled paper cups, cartons, mirrors, paints, ribbons, newspaper, plastic straws, coloured paper They have to— build a sandcastle decorate the sandcastlemake flags wash hands Tick the ideas which you think are the best. 1) build a sandcastle Jini builds a sandcastle and uses recycled paper cups to make the castle taller. Puffy uses a carton, some mirrors, thermocol and paints. 18
What all would you use to make the castle? __________________________________________________________ 2) decorate the sandcastle Jini uses two old red ribbons to make a pretty rose for decoration. Puffy plucks five flowers from the garden for decoration. How would you make the flowers or decorate the sandcastle? __________________________________________________________ 3) make flags Jini colours newspaper cutouts to make flags. Puffy uses coloured paper and plastic straws. What would you use to make flags? __________________________________________________________ 4) wash hands and feet Jini uses one mug to wash her hands and one to wash her feet. Puffy uses both mugs to wash his feet and has nothing left to wash his hands with! How would you do this task? __________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ Based on the theme of the competition, who would you declare the winner? 19
Ice cream for thought__________________________________________________________ Do you think— the resources around us must be used in a responsible way so that we waste less? YES / NO / MAYBE it is important to manage waste material well instead of buying new things? YES / NO / MAYBE We should always try to make the most out of everything that we have. Even things that we consider waste material can be reused creatively. Do on your own We can turn household waste into compost! Composting is a mixture of rotting dead leaves or manure. It can be used as healthy food for the soil to help plants grow. Here’s a list of all the things we will need. Gather all these things. a bin kitchen scraps such as leftover food and vegetable peels (anything we can eat can be added to the compost bucket) soil dried leaves and cut grass water 20
1) Begin by putting a layer of soil into the bin. 2) Add kitchen scraps and then add dried leaves and grass. 3) Add just a little bit of water, and cover the lid of the compost bin. Make sure that the lid has a few holes for air to pass through. Leave this for two to three weeks. Remember to turn and mix it once in five days. Now our compost is ready. Sprinkle it on the soil to keep the plants healthy. Congratulations! We have made the most out of our waste. 21
8 Managing Our Waste Do you know that paying attention to the things we waste is one of the ways to save the environment? First, let’s understand what can be done with waste. There are three actions that can be taken to manage waste. Reuse: find a new way to use our old things instead of throwing them away Reduce: lessen the amount of waste we make Recycle: use waste to make new things Match the following. 1) Reduce a) Give away your old clothes and toys to others who may be able to use them. 2) Reuse b) Give away newspapers, cans, plastic cups and bottles that can be used again. 3) Recycle c) Carry your own shopping bag instead of taking plastic bags. Different types of waste needs to be managed in different ways. Some waste can be recycled. Other types of waste cannot be. 22
THINGS WE CAN RECYCLE food box brown paper newspapers cans books aluminium foil THINGS WE CANNOT RECYCLE chips packets plastic bags glass bottle plastic cutlery It is important to separate waste so that we can recycle it properly. Let us play a game and learn the importance of separating waste. 1) Take two old boxes and colour one red and the other green. 2) Label the green one ‘kitchen waste’. 3) Label the red one ‘recyclables’. 4) Empty all the garbage or waste that you have in your bag or near you on your table. (You can also go around your classroom and collect waste.) 5) Divide the class into two teams. 6) One person from every team gets up and takes a look at the garbage. 7) They then pick up one thing and decide which box that waste will go into. 8) Keep score on the blackboard. 9) The team that gets the maximum right answers wins! 23
Think, Feel and Share Can you think of things you use daily that you can either reuse, reduce or recycle? One is done for you. REUSE RECYCLE REDUCE glass bottle paper plastic spoons __________________ __________________ __________________ __________________ __________________ __________________ __________________ __________________ __________________ __________________ __________________ __________________ Do on your own You can now install two dustbins in your house—one red and one green. Let’s remember to do the following. Put only plastic, glass, rubber, metal (cans, tins) or other such things in the red bin. Put only kitchen waste in the green bin. Separating waste is the first step towards managing it! 24
9 Bringing a Positive Change There are a lot of things that happen around us that we don’t like or want to change. But we may not take any action to change them. If we want to bring about a positive change, we should take action. Have you ever heard anyone say these things? Write ‘yes’ or ‘no’. ‘There are so many wrappers lying on the school canteen floor. Someone should clean it.’ __________ ‘The garden is so messy. Why don’t they keep it properly?’ __________ ‘I am bored.’ __________ ‘Why doesn’t somebody switch off the fans? There’s no one in the room.’ __________ What do you think is the right thing to do? Tick your answer. Complain about things that others do not do. Take steps on our own to change things we do not like. 25
Let’s make a ‘task chart’ of the things that we can start doing on our own. Two are done for you. TIME TASK 1) wake up switch off the alarm, put on slippers, make the bed 2) bathroom time 3) breakfast time 4) school time 5) after-school time help at home, do homework, play It is not about doing great things. Even the smallest actions matter in the long run. We can always try to make a positive change through small actions. Some of our actions might be successful, some might not. But we should try out our ideas even if they can make a small change. Think about a club that you would want to start in your school. For example, you can start a ‘Recycle, Reduce, Reuse’ club or a ‘School Cleanliness’ club and so on. What would the name of the club be? ______________________ What would the club do? _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ Now that our club is formed, let us have our first club meeting! 26
How to bring about a change We can do the following to bring about a change. We should not complain about things like garbage on the road, or trees being cut. We can try and think of ways to change what is wrong around us. We can involve and encourage family and friends to join us in bringing about a change. Think, Feel and Share Can you think and write of anyone around you who has taken a step to bring about a change? _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ 27
10 Heart to Heart Hello, everybody! Today, let us learn how we can notice and know more about another person’s feelings. Do you know what that would make us? It would make us ‘sensitive’. Are you sensitive to other people’s needs, problems or feelings? Then, you are aware of how they feel, and you understand them. Write down one thing that you do when someone is feeling the following emotions. happy _________________________________________________ sad _________________________________________________ angry _________________________________________________ afraid _________________________________________________ ashamed _________________________________________________ Let us team up with our partners and play this little game. Each pair gets one minute. 1) The first person shall say something that they like or dislike. 2) Then, the second person shall say the same thing using different words. You can begin by saying, ‘What you said is. . .’ 3) After one minute, the second person gets the chance to speak first. Why did we repeat what our partner said? We did this to make sure that we have understood them correctly. 28
Here are some examples. You: I do not like milkshakes, because they are too sweet. Partner: What you said is that milkshakes are very sweet and so you don’t like them. You: I like to sing, because it makes me happy. Partner: What you said is that you feel happy when you sing. Can you give an example here from the game you played? You: ___________________________________________________. Partner: ___________________________________________________. Think, Feel and Share Sharing our feelings with our friends makes us feel good. Sometimes, they might not agree with what we say. But that’s all right. Pick your partners. Ask them how they are feeling and write it here. _______________________________________________________ What do you think your partner will want you to do for them? _______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ Paying attention to our friend’s feelings can help us to become ______________________________________________________. 29
11 Everyone Together Makes a Team! Have you ever faced a challenge and did not know what to do? For example, maybe you found it difficult to solve a puzzle. At such times, have you felt that it would have been easier if there was somebody to help you? Let us see how working together can be helpful. Get into pairs. 1) In each pair, one person shall be blindfolded. The other person will be the helper. They will help the blindfolded person move around the room by holding their hand. 2) The goal is to cross the classroom from one corner to the other together. 3) In the second round, the helper shall become the blindfolded person. Would it be easier for you to Yes No cross the room without any help? Yes No Would the activity be the same without your partner? 30
Ice cream for thought Do you think— by supporting each other and working together, we can finish our work faster? YES / NO / MAYBE it takes longer for us to finish the work all by ourselves? YES / NO / MAYBE every member of a team is important? YES / NO / MAYBE If we work together, we can overcome many challenges and do a lot of good things. 31

These are good touches. Good touches are safe touches. They are NEVER a SECRET. There are some touches that we do not like or want. When any touch makes us feel uncomfortable, we should always say ‘NO’. 32
Also remember that our mouth, chest, the parts between our legs and our buttocks are our PRIVATE PARTS. mouth chest parts between our legs buttocks private parts When we are young, doctors and parents can touch our private parts to keep them healthy and clean. Ask them again. Leave them alone. 2) Your uncle is leaving. He wants you to give him a hug. But you do not want to. What will you do? Say ‘no’ politely. Give a hug. Say ‘bye’ instead. 34
How to deal with bad touch When ANYONE touches you or your private parts in a way that you do not like, you can do the following things. Shout loudly and ask for help. Say ‘no’ and push them away. Immediately tell a grown-up whom you trust. Never keep it a secret. Call 1098. It is a child helpline number. My safe person is ....................................... whom I can always talk to about everything. I trust them because I know they will keep me safe. 36
13 Every Action Has a Reaction Have you ever wondered what would happen if we took a decision without thinking? All our actions have results. Some results of our actions can last for a very long time. Let us understand this through an example. 1) Find an old tub or a bucket for the classroom. 2) Fill it with water. 3) One or two people from the class can get up and throw something small into the water. It can be a stone, a sharpener, an eraser and so on. What did you see? _______________________________________________________________ Did you see how it caused ripples? Yes No What happened to those ripples? _______________________________________________________________ The thing that you threw in the water was your action and the ripples were the results of that action. All our actions—whether good or bad—have many effects, one after the other, just like the ripples. 37
Who do you think will be affected if you did the following actions? Match each action with those who will be affected. 1) plant trees a) family 2) help parent at home b) friend 3) burst loud firecrackers c) I 4) do not study d) Earth 5) tell a grown-up when I see my e) animals friend being bullied Think, Feel and Share All our actions have either good or bad effects. Some actions seem to be correct and easy at one point. But they may have bad effects later. We must think if it is truly a good action that will have good results. Can you think of an action you did in the past that has helped you or someone else? _______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ 38
14 Think Before You Act Have you ever noticed the tiny little voice in your mind that gives you ideas? It even tells you when something is right or wrong. Do you know what that little voice is called? Try to find out and write it down here. __________________________________________ What do you think the tiny little voice in your head will say if you did the following? 1) You go out to play without letting your parents know. __________________________________________________________ 2) You do your homework and submit it on time. __________________________________________________________ 3) You get angry with your parents because they didn’t get you something as soon as you asked. __________________________________________________________ 4) You do something your parents or teachers have told you not to do. __________________________________________________________ 39

What do you do? a) Tell a teacher. b) Tell your friend why it is wrong. c) Join them. 3) You want your favourite seat in the school bus. What do you do? a) Stand in line and wait for your turn. b) Keep pushing the person ahead. c) Cut the line and go forward. Your teacher will tell you how to calculate your score. If you’ve scored... 4–7 points: You are good at making the right choices. You think before doing something. Keep it up! 8–12 points: You get a little confused at times about what is right and what is wrong. But that doesn’t mean you’re bad; you can try your best. 40
Pledge Time Let us say the following out loud together. I will always think before doing something. If I am confused, I will ask a grown-up for help. I will try my best to listen to the little voice in my head. 41
15 Fair Chances for All Hello, everybody! Have you ever thought that the food, books and clothes we have are special? Not many people have all these things. Let’s play a game to understand this better. 1) Let us divide ourselves into groups of five. The others can observe the activity and cheer for their friends. 2) Write down the names of all your favourite animals on pieces of paper. The first group shall do this activity first. 3) Every person will pick up a chit and be the animal that is written on the chit. The five members of the group shall stand next to each other. 4) It is a hurdle race where animals have to race through a field, swim, climb trees and walls, fly and reach the finishing line. Your teacher will read out the following instructions. You can listen to the instruction, think and take a step either forward or backward. Let’s begin! If you are an animal that walks very slow, take a step backward. If you are an animal that will sink in water, step backward. If you can fly, step forward. If you can cannot run long distances, step backward. If you can climb trees, step forward. 5) The others can check if their friends are taking the right steps. 42
Now, look at your friends and see where they stand. Let’s answer the following questions. Are they in line with each other? Yes No All animals are different and have different abilities. Is it fair for them to start from the same point or run the same race? Yes No Do you think it would have been better if the Yes No animals helped each other to win the race? In the same way, all of us are different. Some of us have more than others—more education, more food, more respect due to various reasons. The world will become a better place if we share what we have and help each other. 43
How to help others when we have more than them We should be kind and help those who don’t have the advantages we have. We can start by doing the following. Step 1: Stop – Before you do something, stop for a minute. Step 2: Think – Go through it in your mind. Think whether it is the fair thing to do. You can also talk to an adult if you’re confused. Step 3: Do – If it feels right, go ahead and do it! Pledge Time Let us all say the following out loud together. I will always be thankful for what I have. I will always try to use what I have to help others. I will be kind to everyone. I will also try to understand others’ thoughts and opinions. 44
16 Hope for the World Did you know that there is a lot of energy within each one of us? We can all bring about a change! Read the list given below. Put a tick against the things that you have done. Draw a star against the things that you would like to do. taking care of an animal helping an old person cross the road carrying a heavy bag for your parents or grandparents helping parents with housework giving food to someone in need making friends with someone who seems lonely trying to stop fights or bad arguments not making fun of someone who looks different or is different from most people planting trees donating clothes to those who need them 45
Now, you can be a change-maker. Your actions can make the world a better place. Think, Feel and Share Did you know that the feeling of wishing for something to happen is called hope? When we have hope, we work to make good things happen. What do you want to change in the world? You can draw, write or stick pictures in the blank space to share your ideas. 46
