3 Grammar Singular and plural nouns Look at these toys. Wow! There is a truck, a car and an aeroplane. Look at the cute teddy bear and the rabbit. Look, the lovely doll is smiling at you! The words ‘toys’, ‘truck’, ‘car’, ‘aeroplane’, ‘teddy bear’, ‘rabbit’ and ‘doll’ are common naming words. Common naming words can be singular (single or one) or plural (more than one or many). Remember  Singular naming words name a single person, place, animal or thing.  Plural naming words name more than one person, one car place, animal or thing. many cars  Most naming words are made plural by adding ‘-s’ to the ends of the words. 3 Grammar Subject pronouns Read the following sentences. Ruhi and her mother Rohan plays football. The bus is big. go to the market. Rohan is a happy boy. The bus moves fast. Ruhi and her mother buy clothes. ‘Ruhi’, ‘mother’, ‘Rohan’ and ‘bus’ are naming words. The naming words in the sentences above have been repeated. This makes the sentences longer. Now, read the sentences given below. Ruhi and her mother Rohan plays football. The bus is big. go to the market. He is a happy boy. It moves fast. They buy clothes. We use the words ‘they’, ‘he’ and ‘it’ in place of the repeated naming words. These words are called pronouns. Pronouns are words that we use in place of naming words. Module 4 35

Subject pronouns are pronouns that take the place of naming words (people, places, animals and things) that do the main action in a sentence. 4 I Write Naming parts and action parts of sentences A group of words make up a sentence. A sentence tells us about a thought or an idea. All sentences have a naming part and an action part. They together state a complete thought. The naming part is who or what is being talked about. It can be the name of a person, animal, place or thing.
