17 That Little Voice in My Head It can be difficult to decide which choice is wrong and which is right. There is always a little voice in our head that can help us make decisions. That voice has the answers to the questions we ask ourselves before making a choice or a decision. Let’s play the Choice-chair Challenge! 1) Divide the class into two teams. Each team stands in two separate lines. 2) Keep two chairs in the front of the class. 3) Stick a ‘happy face’ cutout to one chair and a ‘sad face’ cutout to the other. 4) The chair with the ‘happy face’ is the ‘good choice chair’. The chair with the ‘sad face’ is the ‘bad choice chair’. 5) The teacher will read out the statements from the list given on the next page. 6) A person from each team will run towards the ‘good choice chair’ if they think the choice in the statement is correct. They will run to the ‘bad choice chair’ if they think it is wrong. 7) The game is to see who makes the right decision and reaches the right chair first. 8) The team that makes the most number of right decisions wins! So, are you ready for the Choice-chair Challenge? Here is the list of choices. Your teacher will read it out for the Choice-chair Challenge. You can come back later and put a tick in front of the ones you 47

think are right choices. Walk away when someone starts a fight with you. Hurt a cat. Refuse to listen to your parents when they ask you to help them. Treat others the way you want to be treated. Fight with your brother or sister. Share your chocolate with your friends. Give some sweets to all your friends in class except the new boy. Share your lunch with everyone. Sit by your friend who is feeling sad. Laugh at the girl who falls down. 48

How to make the right choices Before making any choice, ask the following questions to yourself. How would I feel if somebody did this to me? Could it hurt anyone later? How will I feel about myself later if I do it now? These questions will help us make the right choices. Ice cream for thought Do you think— we should listen to the voice in our head before doing something? YES / NO / MAYBE we should think of the results of our choices before making a decision? YES / NO / MAYBE One choice might be right in one situation and wrong in the other. It is always safe to think well before making a decision. 49

18 Looking After What We Use There are many places that can be used by everyone. Mostly, the government looks after them. They are called public property. It is important for us to take care of these places and the things there. It is our duty to keep them in good condition. Given below are some pictures. Each picture shows a place. Can you write below, what each place is? 50

Tick the correct options. 1) What do these pictures have in common? a) Many people are present. b) They are in outer space. 2) How should these places be kept? a) clean and tidy b) broken, dirty and not looked after Look at the following pictures. Do you like them this way? Cross out the ones that you don’t like. 51

Can we, the people who use these places, help keep them clean and proper? List two ways in which you can help. 1) __________________________________________________________ 2) __________________________________________________________ Pledge Time let us make a promise to ourselves. I shall treat public property with care. I shall stop others who try to spoil walls or gates of public buildings such as schools and parks. I shall not litter roads, schools or parks. I shall stop those who throw garbage on the street. I shall always close public taps after using them. Name: ____________________________ Signature: _________________________ 52

19 Out of Stock! We should always remember that we have got the Earth and its resources from people who came before us. It is our duty to use the resources with care. We should keep the Earth safe and plentiful for those who will come after us. Given below is a table. Study it carefully. Quantity Items 5 apples 6 5 ice cream 6 milkshakes pizzas Imagine you had these items for a week. For how many days would they last? _________ If a friend visited you afterwards, would there be any left for them? _____ In the same way, all natural resources, such as water, oil, coal and trees, come from nature and are not unlimited. They will all finish one day. So, we must try and use them carefully! 53

Can you tell us where these come from? 1) desks and benches 2) fruits and vegetables 3) electricity 4) water 5) paper In the last several years, many large forests in India were cut down to make big factories, roads and buildings. Rivers in our country have either dried up, are dirty or have very little water left in them. The air around us is getting dirtier every day. We are using up the resources very fast and not giving them time to regrow. This way they will finish soon and there will be nothing left for the people who will come after us. Think, Feel and Share We must act before it is too late! Little things matter when it comes to saving our planet. Think and discuss in class what things will no longer be available if we continue destroying forests, rivers, air and other parts of our environment. Write them down in the space given below. 54

Do on your own Can you make a poster on the next page to save help save the environment and its resources? You can make copies and stick them in different places with the help of your friends so that everyone can read and follow it. Here are some examples. Please turn off the light when not in use 55

56

20 Our Earth Heroes Many people have played important roles in saving the environment and inspiring others to do the same. Do you know of the Chipko movement? The Chipko movement began in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. On March 26, 1974, a group of brave women in Reni village started hugging trees to protect them from being cut down. Let us all get together and discuss more such stories about people who helped save the environment. They are our Earth Heroes. 57

We can also bring about a change by doing little things. We will then become Little Earth Heroes! Imagine you are a Little Earth Hero. What will your superpowers be? Draw them in the space given below. 58

Look at the poster given below. What will be your slogan as a Little Earth Hero? Write it in the yellow box. You can also make a copy of this poster and paste it in your room. Pledge Time Let us say the following out loud together. I will take care of the trees and plants around me. I will motivate others to take care of our environment as well. I will plant as many trees as possible. 59
