The World and I 4 Learning to Live Well Name: ____________________________ Section: ________________ Roll No.: ______ School: ____________________________

For teachers and parents . . . A holistic formal education must encompass not just literacy and numeracy skills, but also life skills based on social and emotional learning (SEL). Managing and maintaining relationships, dealing with problems of different kinds and managing oneself are some key social-emotional skills required in life in the 21st century. The CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning, USA) framework for systemic social and emotional learning defines SEL as: ‘… the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships and make responsible decisions’. The authors have referred to various researches conducted on SEL while designing the framework and content for the books. The World and I series by ClassKlap aims at engaging students in a way that ensures:  opportunities to generate greater awareness of the self  recognition of the need, and exposure to the methods of managing oneself and one’s emotions  greater understanding, empathy, care and concern for others with a focus on inclusiveness  inculcation of social and environmental awareness along with a sense of responsibility towards and ownership of the society and the planet All of this is done through the use of age-appropriate and engaging content which includes the use of stories, comic strips, activities, songs, poems, characters and colourful illustrations suited to the Indian cultural context. The goal of the series is to enhance young learners’ awareness of their own selves and sensitise them to the world around them so that growing up is a more joyful experience. A vital aim is to nurture them as more sensitive human beings to create a generation that is wiser and more humane. We hope teachers and parents will take an active interest in co-creating a learning environment where learners can meaningfully engage with the content of these books. We hope that the young learners will have as much fun going through these books as we had designing them. – The Authors

2 Eating Healthy Our body and mind are growing every day. Many germs enter our bodies through the different things that we eat and drink. Sometimes they also cause diseases. But there are some things that can help us. Fruits and vegetables can come to our rescue! If our body is healthy, we will be able to grow well, sleep well, play well and also study well. Circle the food items that can help us stay healthy. 4

3 People We Look up to There are many people we admire for the things they do very well. We want to be like them. They are our role models. My role model is my mother. I want to be strong and hard working like her. We know many people who are famous for the great things that they have done. Given below are the pictures and jumbled names of some people you may know. Unjumble their names and write them. 1) PLAKANA AHCLAW ______________________________ Hint: She was the first Indian woman to go to space. 2) ANRI LSAKHIMAIB ______________________________ Hint: She was the Queen of Jhansi who fought against the British. 3) SCHAIN ETDNLUAKR ______________________________ Hint: He was the captain of the Indian men’s cricket team. 4) ADBLU KLAMA ______________________________ Hint: He was called the Missile Man of India who was also the 11th President of India. 7

Think, Feel and Share Our role model does not have to be someone famous. They can be anyone who inspires us to do something good. Look at the pictures of people doing different things. Which of the following actions would you like your role model to do? Put a tick under those pictures. 9

4 No More a Problem! Problems are an important part of our lives. They help us learn new lessons. The most exciting but challenging part of a problem is solving it. Let us try to solve the problem of waste in a little village in the Himalayas. A beautiful, small village located at the foothills of the Himalayas attracted a lot of tourists. The tourists used to throw leftover food, in plastic bags, near the stream. They also used to throw chocolate wrappers, empty chips packets and plastic bottles into the stream. 10

When the hungry dogs tried to eat the leftovers, the plastic would get stuck in their mouths. The beautiful village had become dirty. All the villagers were very worried about this problem. Choose a partner. Can you work together and come up with two solutions to this problem? __________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ 11

How to solve a problem Here are the steps you can follow to solve any problem. Step 1 Step 2 Understand the problem. Try and find solutions. ? What is my problem? Think, think, think of some solutions. Step 3 Step 4 Think about the results of Test the solution. the solutions. What would happen if...? Give your solution a try. Would it be safe? How would I feel? How would others feel? 12

Ice cream for thought Do you think— there is just one solution to any problem? YES / NO / MAYBE sometimes we need help from others to solve our problems? YES / NO / MAYBE sometimes many people have to come together to solve a problem? YES / NO / MAYBE We can solve problems easily if we understand them properly. We should also think about the results of our solutions before trying them out. 13

5 Thinking Over Our Actions We do many things throughout the day without caring about their results. Sometimes, we do not think about the effects our actions have on others or even on ourselves. Let’s play a game called ‘Have you ever…?’ Read the following. Put a  if your answer is ‘I have’. Put a  if your answer is ‘I have not’. made somebody laugh made somebody cry discovered a talent in yourself found out something new to learn thought about what you did the whole day 14

How to improve our everyday actions Before doing anything we should always check if— it is right. it is necessary. it is kind. Think, Feel and Share When you go home today, look in the mirror and think about your day. Here are a few questions you can ask yourself and answer. One important thing I did today is _______________________ How do I feel about it? _____________________________ How can I make tomorrow better? _________________________ Try doing this every day and see how your actions change over time. Do on your own It is always good to think over our actions. Now colour the slogan given on the next page and follow it every day. 15

WHAT WE DO EACH DAY MAKES US WHO WE ARE! 16

6 Making the Best of What We Have Sometimes, we are not happy with the things that we have. We always want more things or something different. Isn’t that so? Let us see how we can make the best of what we already have. There are so many old and used things around us that can be used again. Go around your school or classroom. Look for things that have been thrown away but are still useful. Here are examples of things that you can use. used but clean paper cups old, colourful ribbons cardboard from old boxes in the storeroom glue glitter old, coloured sheets of paper old newspaper ice cream spoons and so on Can you make something useful and interesting out of them? 17

Did you notice that all these were things that have been used before but can be used again. Were you able to make something useful? Draw what you made here. Pledge Time We should always try to make the best use of whatever we have. I will not complain about not having a lot of things. I will try to be happy with the things I already have. I will try to make the best of what I have before throwing them away. Name: _________________ Signature: _______________ 18

7 Money Matters! Sometimes we spend money on less-important things and do not have enough for later. Can you help Solomon spend his money wisely? Solomon’s teacher has given him a list of books to buy for a quiz competition. They will cost Solomon `150. Mummy gives Solomon `50. Papa and Dadi gives him `50 each. Now, he has `150. Then, Dada gives him another `50 and says, ‘It is for emergencies.’ Solomon is very happy. Solomon also wants to buy a lot of toys. Imagine you are Solomon and you have `150. How will you spend the same amount of money? Amount I will spend on 19

Ice cream for thought Should we think before spending money on something? YES / NO / MAYBE If we spend our money wisely, will we be able to use it in a better way? YES / NO / MAYBE Our family works hard to earn money. It is important to spend money carefully. 20

8 Putting Ourselves in Others’ Shoes We often feel sad when our family or friends are sad. We also try to help them at times, don’t we? Helping others can make us very happy! Look at the pictures given below. Let us find out how understanding others and helping them can make things better. 21

What do you see in the given pictures? Write a short story with the help of these pictures. _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ 22

How to show care You saw in the story how understanding and helping others makes things better. Now let’s read a few ways in which we can be caring towards others. Step 1 – understanding someone’s feelings Try to understand how the other person is feeling. Are they sad or angry? Try to understand what made them feel like this. Step 2 – putting yourself in someone else’s place Imagine you are the boy who is crying in the picture. How would you feel— sad, happy, lonely or angry? Why? Step 3 – taking action (if needed) Think. Ask yourself, ‘Can I help them?’ or ‘Can I do something to make them feel better?’ Pledge Time Now, let us all say this out loud, together. We will notice when others are sad. We will try and understand how others are feeling. We will try and help others whenever possible. 23

9 Pay Attention to All Needs We are all different from one another. We look different. We like different things. What we can or cannot do are also different! Different people have different needs. Ali was born with legs that don’t work like everyone else’s. His mother bought him a wheelchair that helps him to go wherever he wants. It is Ali’s first day at school. Do you think Ali will be able to use all parts of the school like the other students? Tick the places that you think he will be able to use. 24

How to accept everyone around us There are many people who are different from us and have different needs. Let us learn how we can become better people by accepting everyone. We should always be caring and respectful towards others. Let us try doing the following. It is OK to notice differences and ask questions respectfully. Use respectful and kind language, and do not make fun of anyone. Try to be helpful and kind to everyone. Look for things that all of us have in common—things that we enjoy or are good at doing. For example, watching cricket, doing maths or drawing. Respect the devices that different people use to help them do different things. For example, wheelchairs, hearing devices, walking canes, spectacles and so on. Pledge Time Let us make a promise to ourselves. I will ACCEPT everyone the way they are. I will always RESPECT others and act with kindness. I will be HELPFUL and KIND to everyone. Name: ______________________ Signature: ___________________ 25

10 Respecting Others Hello, everyone! Today, we are going to talk about respecting people. Tick the behaviours which show respect. being polite being rude being helpful and caring listening to others making fun of others 26

Who do you think should be respected? Colour the clouds and write the reasons why they should be respected. people older than us our family our friends ________________ ________________ ________________ _______________ _______________ _______________ animals people younger than us ourselves ________________ ________________ ________________ _______________ _______________ _______________ Ice cream for thought Do you think— to respect somebody is to accept them for who they are? YES / NO / MAYBE we should respect people of all ages, religions and colours? YES / NO / MAYBE we should respect people, even if we do not agree with them? YES / NO / MAYBE Let us respect people, even if they are different from us. Let us treat everyone the way we want to be treated. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect! 27

11 Expressing Without Words You do not always need words to say what you want. Just a smile or a hug can make someone happy. Can you make these faces and show them to your friends? See if they can guess what you are feeling. 1) very happy 2) scared 3) surprised 4) excited Now, let us see how well you can talk without words. 1) Divide the class into two teams. 2) Have a toss to decide which team will go first. 3) The team that wins the toss thinks of a word, or the name of a film or a book. 4) One member of the opposite team is then told what that word is. 28

5) That member of the opposite team has to act out the word or name in front of their team without using any words. 6) Their team has to guess the word or name. 7) If they are able to guess the word or name, they get five points! 8) The team with the most number of points wins. Think, Feel and Share Have you ever said the following things without using a word? Share your stories here through words or by drawing. Then, share them with your class. Yes/No Sorry Hello 29

12 Healthy Competition All of us always want to make ourselves better. At times, we want to be better than others in certain things. However, it is important to do it in a healthy way; this can only happen when teammates and friends treat each other with respect. Healthy competition is when we enjoy the game or the sport. We don’t focus only on winning, but try to become better. Read these scenarios and select the one that shows healthy competition. 1) Sony is a lawn tennis player. He works very hard. Whenever he wins, he is very happy. But if he loses, he makes angry faces at the other players. Once, Sony even refused to shake hands with the winner after the game. 2) Taru is the topper of his class. He studies regularly. Taru practises everything taught in class at home. Taru also helps all his classmates with lessons they find difficult. 3) Chameli and Gulaabi are twins. When Chameli does better in her exams and gets more marks, Gulaabi gets jealous. When Gulaabi got selected to be the captain of the football team, Chameli became sad. They become angry with each other instead of helping each other improve. 30

Now, let us wear our chef hats and learn how to cook a healthy potion of competition. 2 big spoons of 1 gallon of 1 cup of respecting our playing fairly following rules opponents 4 cups of improving 5 big spoons of 2 cups of accepting ourselves having fun defeat gracefully 2 big spoons of 1 gallon of 1 gallon of respecting oneself respecting our sporting spirit teammates 31

Write your own recipe for healthy competition. Take two teaspoonsful every day! _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ Pledge Time Let us say the following out loud together. We will always try to make ourselves better. We will respect those who are better than us and learn from them. We will respect those who win against us and also those who lose against us. 32

13 Healthy Friendships Friends are an important part of our lives. We play with them, talk to them and have fun with them. We trust and believe in them. But sometimes, we do things just to impress our friends. At times, friends may even force us to do things that we don’t want to. Let’s look at a scenario in which friends are helpful and another in which they are harmful. Scenario 1 Akshay: Look at that boy. He is such a loser! Iman: Who? Akshay: That new student. What is he wearing? His shirt looks funny. I think we should teach him a lesson. Let’s scare him on the bus ride home today. Iman: I don’t know. I think we should leave him alone. Akshay: Are you worried about getting into trouble? Are you with us or not? Iman: No, I did not mean that. I am with you but... 33

Scenario 2 Fiza: Hey! Let’s try out for the school music show. Alina: But I don’t sing. I play badminton. Fiza: Who says you can’t do both? You have a lovely voice! Alina: Me? No, I don’t. What if I make a fool of myself? Fiza: Maybe you will, maybe you won’t. But whatever happens, I will be very proud of you for trying. Don’t worry about it too much. It will be fun! Read each statement and tick the right answer. Yes No Akshay shows unhelpful and hurtful actions. Iman feels afraid of being left out. Fiza encourages Alina. Akshay uses hurtful words. Fiza and Alina have a healthy friendship. Some friendships can help us become better people, while others may hurt us or get us into trouble. 34

How to make friendships healthy Have your friends ever forced you to do something you didn’t want to do? You can try to use any of these ideas to help you get out of a such a situation. Just say ‘no’: ‘No, thanks.’ Suggest a better idea: ‘OK, but how about _______________________________ instead?’ Change the subject: ‘I almost forgot to tell you about _____________________________!’ Leave the scene: ‘No. I have to go to _______________. See you later!’ Tell them how you are feeling: ‘No, because ____________________ I feel ____________________ when you _________________________.’ Can you think of one more suggestion? Write it down here. ______________________________ ________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ ________________________________________ 35

Think, Feel and Share Sometimes our friends encourage us to do good things. Sometimes they might force us to do things against our wish. Read these scenarios and write responses for each. Shubha: You have a maths test after lunch, right? Let me help you study for it. I am sure you will do very well! You: _____________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ Mithun: I took these two candies for us. Hide them in your pocket. Let us walk out of the shop without paying for them. Are you brave enough to do it? You: _____________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ 36

14 Stop Bullying! Has anybody ever made you feel bad or hurt you? What should we do when this happens? Uncle Penguin will talk to us about bullying. Hi! I am Uncle Penguin, and I will tell you about bullying. We may enjoy doing many things. But if we are feeling bad or hurt, we will not be able to have fun or learn anything. Whoever hurts us, makes fun of us, hits us or forces us to do something we don’t want to, is a bully. Look at the following clouds. Can you connect the ones which show bullying to the circle in the centre? physically hurting helping someone saying hurtful someone with homework things BULLYING asking a new making people feel student to join a left out of groups game 37

Read the following sentences and colour the happy or sad smiley accordingly. Also write what you would do in these situations. Someone steals your belongings. _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ Someone shares their toys with you. _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ Someone praises the way you dress. _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ Someone teases you for not being a good student. _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ A senior in school hits you. _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ 38

How to deal with bullying These are a few things you can do if you are being bullied. Walk away when the bully comes near you. Show that you don’t care. Shout ‘STOP’ and walk away. When the bully disturbs you and calls you names, say to yourself, ‘I am not alone. It is not my fault.’ Come up with jokes like ‘Do you feel better now?’ Tell someone you trust about the bullying. It can be a teacher, your parent, a close friend or anyone else. When you see somebody being bullied, you may choose to say one of these things. ‘Stop that, it is not OK. Don’t we need to go to class?’ ‘This is not fair. Let’s all leave.’ Pledge Time Let us pledge to end bullying. I will speak up when I see bullying. I will help others who are being bullied. I will be a friend and give support to anyone who is being bullied. Name: ______________________ Signature: ___________________ 39

15 Keeping My Body Safe Our bodies are very important. We use them to play and work. It is very important to keep our bodies safe as well. But, how do we keep our bodies safe? Meet Friendly Owl, who will talk to us about body safety. Hello! I am Friendly Owl. The first rule for keeping our bodies safe is that— NO ONE TOUCHES ANY PART OF OUR BODY IF WE DON’T LIKE IT OR IF WE ARE UNCOMFORTABLE. Always remember that good touches keep us safe and are good for us. They make us feel cared for and important. ALL GOOD TOUCHES ARE SAFE TOUCHES. They are NEVER a secret. 40

Some touches might be SAFE but we may not want them from that person or at that moment. They can come from a stranger or a known person. We should ALWAYS say ‘NO’ to such touches. Now let us learn another very important rule— the body parts rule. NO ONE TOUCHES OUR PRIVATE PARTS. The parts you can see in red in the given picture are our private parts. When we are young, doctors and parents can touch our private parts to keep them healthy and clean. But, it is NEVER a secret! 41

Match the situations on the left with the correct responses on the right. 1) Someone touches you and you a) Say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ depending on don’t like it. how you feel. 2) Your doctor asks you to b) Say ‘No!’. remove your shirt for a check-up. 3) Someone asks you if they c) It is OK as the doctor wants to can hug you. make sure we are healthy. 4) Someone asks you to take d) Remember that this is a private off your clothes. They also ask part and say ‘no’. you to keep it a secret. 5) Someone touches your chest. e) Say ‘no’ and tell a trusted elder. How to deal with bad touch When any person touches you in a way that you don’t like or touches your private parts, you can do the following. Shout loudly. Say a clear and loud ‘no’. Tell a grown-up you trust about what made you uncomfortable. Never keep it a secret. If there is no one you can talk to, you can always call 1098 for help. 1098 is the child helpline number. 42

Ice cream for thought Do you think— it is OK if someone touches our private body parts? YES / NO / MAYBE it is OK for someone to ask us to take our clothes off? YES / NO / MAYBE Always remember: If you do not feel comfortable when people touch you, you should always say a loud ‘NO’ or tell a trusted grown-up. Do on your own Here is a Safe and Smart certificate. Fill it up! SAFE AND SMART CERTIFICATE My name is ...................................................., and I am safe and smart. My safe person is ....................................... whom I can always talk to about everything. I trust them because I know they will keep me safe. 43

16 Everything Has a Reason We all do a lot of things every day. Our parents and teachers keep telling us what to do and what not to do. Do we know why we choose to do some things and not do others? Choose a partner and discuss with them why we do the following things. Write down the reasons. We stand in We eat green a line. vegetables. We like watching We close the tap TV. after using it. 44

We study We plant trees. regularly. What things did you do today since morning? Can you think of why you did them? WHAT DID I DO? WHY DID I DO IT? _______________________ _______________________ _______________________ _______________________ _______________________ _______________________ _______________________ _______________________ _______________________ _______________________ 45

Ice cream for thought Mostly, there is a reason for our actions. Do you think— before saying ‘no’ to our parents or teachers, we should try and find out the reason behind their instructions? YES / NO / MAYBE we should try and explain the reason behind our actions if someone is not able to understand? YES / NO / MAYBE There is always a reason behind why we do something or why our parents and teachers want us to do something. We can always ask them to explain the reason politely. 46
