Preface IMAX Program partners with schools, supporting them with learning materials and processes that are all crafted to work together as an interconnected system to drive learning. IMAX Program presents the latest version of this series – updated and revised after considering the perceptive feedback and comments shared by our experienced reviewers and users. This series endeavours to be faithful to the spirit of the prescribed board curriculum. Our books strive to ensure inclusiveness in terms of gender and diversity in representation, catering to the heterogeneous Indian classroom. The books are split into two parts to manage the bag weight. Listening, speaking, reading and writing (LSRW) are fundamental skills for any language skills, and students’ mastery over them is key to success at school. All these skills frequently need to be used together. Therefore, the English textbooks and workbooks strive to provide adequate opportunities for students to practise all the four LSRW skills. To this effect, the English textbooks and workbooks offer the following features:  T heme-based literature pieces across classes 1-5  S amples of Indian writing in English as well as popular English literature pieces from western countries  P ictures for word meanings in each lesson to help students with visual clues for new or difficult words  Supplementary literature pieces (without questions and answers) to enable additional reading  A speaking project and two reading comprehension passages in each unit to further hone speaking and reading skills  H orizontal and vertical progression across grades for the grammar concepts covered in the workbooks, providing a spiral of cumulative learning  S amples of format-based writing to provide for scaffolding of learning of formal writing Overall, the IMAX English textbooks, workbooks and teacher companion books aim to generate greater engagement with and enhance fluency in English language communication and empower students to develop a genuine appreciation of the language and its literature. – The Authors Alpine_English_G4_TB.indb 2 12/13/2018 7:15:10 PM

Animals Are 1 Friends Life Around Us Listen and Say Aloud Words fractured platform organisation abandoned mistreated shelter rescue environment Warm Up • What would you do if you saw a hungry stray dog? • Do you think we should protect and take care of sick animals? Discuss. Let us read some news articles that inspired Nina to protect and take care of animals. Alpine_English_G4_TB.indb 1 1 12/13/2018 7:15:13 PM

Reading the Text One Sunday morning, Nina opened a weekly magazine to find articles on animals. Nina loved animals. She felt sad when she read or heard about an animal being mistreated. But today was different. The magazine was filled with beautiful stories about people who helped and protected animals. She quickly began reading the first article. The Rescue of Siddha, the Wild Elephant A wild elephant in Karnataka, named Siddha, had fallen into a ditch and fractured his legs. For over 40 days, he could not walk. The Karnataka Forest Department, the Indian Army and the NGO (Non-Governmental Organisation) Wildlife SOS came together. They made a special metal structure to help him stand. He was then moved to a special room so that the vets could treat him. He was improving, but he developed an internal infection. Many animal lovers visited vets him and prayed for him. But Siddha did not survive. Nina wiped her tears as she turned the page to read the second story. A Leopard Rescued from a Well In a small village in Maharashtra, a leopard fell into a deep well. A farmer heard the pained cries of the animal and contacted the forest department. Animal rescue experts and villagers came together to help. They lowered a wooden platform into the well and pulled the leopard out. At first, the leopard was very frightened, but then it jumped into the box. After the vet’s checks, it was released into the forest. 2 12/13/2018 7:15:14 PM Alpine_English_G4_TB.indb 2

Nina moved on to the third article about organisations that took care of animals. Animal Protection It was in the 1980s and ’90s that people began discussing cruelty to animals. They formed groups so that they could protect and shelter stray and injured animals. Today, around 50 such groups and organisations are running across the country. They carry out various rescue operations and provide medical aid to animals. They even organise adoption programmes for abandoned or injured rescue operations animals and birds. abandoned NGOs like People for Animals India based in New Delhi and Visakha Society for Protection and Care of Animals in Visakhapatnam provide happy homes for animals. Their goal is to create a safe space where animals can live and grow. Organisations like Friendicoes in Delhi and Blue Cross of India treat sick animals. They have animal doctors on call. They also nurse the sick ones until they are healthy again. ResQ and Animal Rahat in Maharashtra pick up helpless animals from different places and find them welcoming homes. These organisations often visit schools, social clubs and other workspaces. They make people aware that these animals are an important part of our environment. They teach people that it is our duty to protect animals. They try to create a better world where each animal has the right to a healthy and happy life. Alpine_English_G4_TB.indb 13 13 12/13/2018 7:15:50 PM

Reading the Text Long ago, there was a time when elephants had no trunks. Their noses were no bigger than boots. But a young elephant named Stampy changed all that. He always asked a lot of questions. He asked Aunt Ostrich why her tail feathers claw grew just so. Aunt Ostrich hit him with her hard, hard claw. He asked the tall Uncle Giraffe what made his skin spotty. Uncle Giraffe spanked him with his hard, hard hoof. hoof Still, he was full of curiosity! He asked questions about curiosity everything that he saw, heard, felt, smelt or touched. One fine morning, Stampy asked a new question. He asked, ‘What does a crocodile have for dinner?’ ‘Shush’, said all the animals in a scared voice. But he would not shush. He met a bird. She told him where he could find an answer. ‘Go to the Limpopo River’, she said. So, off he went. shush After a week of walking, Stampy reached the edge of the river. He stepped on what he thought was a log of wood. It winked one eye. ‘Excuse me, but have you seen a crocodile in these parts?’ he asked politely. The creature winked the other eye and half lifted his tail out of the mud. Stampy stepped back because he did not wish to be spanked again. ‘Come nearer, little one’, said the crocodile, ‘for I am Mr Crocodile.’ Stampy grew excited and kneeled down. ‘I have been looking for you all these days’, he said. ‘Will you please tell me what you have for dinner?’ ‘Come nearer, little one, and I’ll whisper’, said Mr Crocodile. Stampy put his head close to the crocodile’s mouth. Mr Crocodile caught him by his little nose. Stampy knew he was in big trouble. He sat back, and he pulled and pulled. They both pulled and pulled. Stampy’s nose kept stretching and stretching. At last, the crocodile let go of Stampy. Bfuddudd! Fell Stampy, right on his big, broad back. He looked at his swish nose. He could not see where it ended! It was loooong! So long that he could swish it around! 14 12/13/2018 7:15:51 PM Alpine_English_G4_TB.indb 14

He wrapped his nose in cool banana leaves and waited for it to shrink. He waited and waited. But nothing happened. He could still swish it all around. So, Stampy went home, swishing his trunk. Whenever he wanted a fruit to eat, he could pull it down from a tree. He did not need to wait anymore! One evening, he came back to his dear family and said, ‘How do you do?’ They looked at him and asked, ‘What have you done to your nose?’ ‘I got a new one from the crocodile on the banks of the Limpopo River’, said Stampy. ‘I asked him what he had for dinner, and he gave me this to keep.’ And so it remains to this day. The Fox 4 and the Crocodile Art and Culture Listen and Say Aloud Words faithful pretended grinning charged harvest interrupted unfair sternly Warm Up • Have you ever tricked anyone? How did it end? • Have you ever been tricked by your friends? Let us read an old story about a clever fox and his friend, a crocodile, who grew food together. Let’s find out what happened next. Alpine_English_G4_TB.indb 21 21 12/13/2018 7:16:01 PM

Reading the Text Once upon a time, there lived a cunning fox named Shiyal and his faithful friend Kumir, the crocodile. In those days, food was hard to find, and Shiyal was always hungry. One day, the fox went to Kumir, who lived in the big lake and had no idea about life on land. ‘I have a great idea’, Shiyal said excitedly. ‘Let’s grow crops!’ ‘Good thinking, friend. But which crops should we grow?’ asked Kumir. ‘Let’s grow some sugarcane! It grows well near water, so we can plant it near your lake.’ ‘All right. But what does it taste like?’ ‘It’s delicious! Much better than the rotten food you eat.’ ‘That sounds yummy!’ said Kumir. He helped Shiyal plant the sugarcane rotten and took care of the crop until it was ripe. When it was time to harvest the crop, Shiyal said, ‘Wait, how should we divide the crop between ourselves?’ The clever fox then pretended to think for a while and said, ‘I have an idea! Since you’ve worked so hard for so long, you take all the parts growing under the ground. I’m happy with just the top part, since I haven’t worked as hard as you did.’ ‘So kind of you, Shiyal. Thank you’, said Kumir. pretended But when they pulled out the sugarcane plants, Kumir found out that only small, thin roots grew under the ground! All the ripe, juicy sugarcane stalks were above the ground. The sly fox laughed, but the crocodile was sad and angry. ‘I don’t like sugarcane. Can we grow something different this time?’ Kumir asked bitterly. ‘Sure’, agreed Shiyal, ‘Why don’t we grow some potatoes this year?’ The faithful Kumir helped the fox plant the potatoes. Again, he took care of the plants until they were tall and bushy. When it was time to harvest the crop again, Shiyal asked, ‘How should we share the crop this time, friend?’ He again pretended to think and said, ‘Wait, since you’ve worked so hard, harvest you can . . .’ ‘Oh, this time I will take the top part, if you don’t mind’, interrupted Kumir, who was cheated by Shiyal the last time. 22 12/13/2018 7:16:16 PM Alpine_English_G4_TB.indb 22

‘OK, that’s only fair’, said Shiyal, grinning to himself. They dug up the potatoes together, and Kumir was astonished to learn that all the plump, round potatoes grew under the soil! He tasted his part of the crop, the leaves and the stalks, but they were very bitter. ‘Yuck’, he said, as he spat them out. Enjoying the ripe potatoes all by himself, the cunning fox laughed at the poor crocodile. Kumir was angry by now. He said sternly, ‘This time, we will grow coconuts. I know they grow above the ground! I’ve seen the village kids climb up the coconut trees!’ So, they grew some coconuts. When it was time to harvest again, Shiyal sternly said, ‘My dear Kumir, I know I’ve been unfair to you, and I regret it. This time I won’t trick you. No more roots or bitter leaves for you! You decide which part of the coconut you want—the outside or the inside. I’ll be happy with whatever you choose.’ Kumir thought for a moment. He looked at the bright, shiny green coconuts and said, ‘I’m not stupid, Shiyal. It will have a big, hard seed inside! What if I break my beautiful teeth?’ But when they opened the coconuts, Kumir was shocked to see the white flesh and sweet water inside! He was overcome with fury. He charged towards Shiyal with his jaws wide open. Shiyal grew pale with fear. Kumir was just about to bite off the fox’s tail when he stopped and smiled. ‘Wh . . . what?’ trembled Shiyal. ‘I have a better idea than any of yours!’ said Kumir. ‘From now onwards, we will share the same part of the food fairly between ourselves. That way, both of us will have plenty to eat!’ Shiyal agreed. And ever since that day, neither of them ever went hungry again! – Adapted from a Bangla folktale Let Us Discuss 1) Why did Shiyal want to grow crops with Kumir? 2) Which three crops did the fox and the crocodile grow? 3) Which parts of the potatoes did the crocodile get? 4) What did Kumir want to grow? Reading the Text Arya was busy helping her parents clean the house. After all, it was Diwali the next week. There was a pile of waste on the floor. There were empty plastic and glass bottles, tin cans, soda bottle caps and wrapping paper. ‘What are we going to do with all this waste?’ Arya wondered. Suddenly, Arya’s eyes went to a dusty, old book lying in a corner planters of the room. She picked it up and checked the first page. She saw a beautiful picture of planters lining the wall. She got her first idea! She knew what she was going to do with the plastic bottles. She would reuse these disposable plastic bottles as planters for kitchen herbs. But how? She turned the page and started reading. Make Your Own Kitchen Garden Things you need • plastic bottles • acrylic paint • varnish • cutter • strong jute rope • soil and seeds kitchen garden acrylic paint Get Started Place the bottle horizontally on a table. Take the help of an older person, as cutters can be really sharp. Ask the adult to cut around the middle of the bottle. Make some holes in the bottom of the bottle. Then, decorate the bottle as you wish. You can paint a lovely floral pattern on it. Or you can make big stripes in your favourite colours using acrylic paint. Let the paint dry completely. Then, apply a few coats of varnish to make the surface waterproof. Once your planter is completely dry, put some soil in it and plant some saplings or seeds. Then, sprinkle glitter all over the bottle generously. Blow off the excess, and let it dry. Use this bottle as a flower vase and keep pretty flowers in it! ‘I know whom to gift this to—my best friend Dhriti!’ Arya murmured as she turned to the next page. On it, she saw pictures of the cutest little magnets she had ever seen.
