1 The Blue Jackal Reading The Curse of the Moon Goddess Once upon a time there lived an elephant king in a jungle. He was called Chaturdanta. All the animals were very happy with him. The jackal was his wise minister. Then, one day, news came to Chaturdanta that the summer was terrible and all the lakes and rivers had dried up. There was a law in the jungle that no animal should ever step out of the jungle for food or water. But, Chaturdanta understood that if he did not let the animals look elsewhere for water, they might die. He thought deeply and then bellowed, “O animals, go out looking for water, but be careful – you must not bring any harm to anyone.” The thirsty elephants of his herd were excited on hearing his words. They ran like mad hounds, looking for water. The foxes, leopards, tigers, and jackals also ran out of the forest. The rabbits ran the fastest. But, the elephants did not have time to think about these little creatures around them. Many rabbits came under the feet of the elephants and died! Ascend G2 English G&C Part 1.indb 1 1 7/19/2023 7:44:53 PM

After a few days, rain came to the jungle where Chaturdanta ruled. The lakes were full and the rivers were brimming with water. Everyone was happy except the rabbits. They walked up to Chaturdanta’s minister, the jackal. They said, “Oh, wise one. We do not wish to stay in this forest any longer. Our children have been killed by the king’s own people. Please tell us of a place where we can go and where there is a king who is more kind.” The jackal was upset. He did not want the rabbits to go away. He said, “Give me a day. I will do something for you.” Then the jackal went away and when the moon was up, he wailed like he had never wailed. Frightened, Chaturdanta came looking 2 The Blue Jackal Ascend G2 English G&C Part 1.indb 2 7/19/2023 7:44:54 PM

for him. He said, “What is wrong, Minister? Why are you wailing?” The jackal said, “Alas, my lord. I just heard that the moon goddess is upset with you. We will have no more rains.” Chaturdanta asked, “Why is she upset? What could I have done?” The jackal explained that the elephants had been careless and killed many rabbits while looking for water. Chaturdanta understood what had gone wrong. He swayed his trunk and said, “How can I say sorry to the goddess?” The jackal said, “Come with me. I will take you to her. You must bellow loudly and say sorry to her. If she moves, you must know that she has pardoned you.” So, the elephant king and the jackal went up to a lake. The moon was up in the sky and its shape could be seen in the water of the lake. Chaturdanta bellowed loudly, saying he was sorry and that such sin would never take place again. Suddenly there was a gentle breeze and the water rippled. The shape of the moon swayed a bit. The jackal said, “Oh my lord – you are lucky indeed. The goddess has pardoned you. She has been moved by your prayers.” Chaturdanta sighed in relief! He promised that in his jungle the strong ones would always take care of those who were tiny and weak. 3 Henry Saves Little Rabbit Reading How did We Learn to Fly? In Greek legends, we meet a winged horse called Pegasus. In Indian legends, pakshiraj is also a flying horse. Ancient king Kaj Paoos of Persia also flew around his kingdom with the help of eagles. It is said that king Alexander had flying animals called Griffins. 22 7/19/2023 7:45:10 PM Ascend G2 English G&C Part 1.indb 22

The first things human beings made that could fly were kites. Kites were made in China thousands of years ago. For many centuries, humans have tried to fly just like the birds. Wings made of feathers or light wood have been tied to arms so that humans could fly. But the arms of birds are different and every time we tried these tricks, we failed badly! Then, five hundred years ago, a painter called Leonardo drew pictures of flying machines. This was the first design of an airplane. After that two brothers in France made it possible for people to fly up in gas-filled balloons. It was just the beginning. For another 120 years, humans kept trying to find better ways of flying with wings. Finally, in 1902, two American brothers from the Wright family flew an airplane in a place called Ohio. Their airplane flew for less than an hour. However, it was a great beginning in the history of humans flying like birds.
