Term Project Create your model of the solar system. Saturn Mars Sun Uranus Mercury Earth Venus Jupiter 3/19/2020 6:05:32 PM You will need the following. • A coloured diagram of the solar system • Cardboard sheet • Modelling clay • Chart paper • Black chart paper • Acrylic or poster paints • Markers • Scissors • Paintbrushes • String 26 PNC_SST_G5_WB_Term 1.indb 26

• Pencils • Glue Follow the given steps to make your model of the solar system. 1. Study the diagram of the solar system and identify the colour of each planet. Find out the distinct features of the planets. Make a list of distinct features and colours of the planets. For example, Jupiter has a large red spot; Saturn has rings; Neptune is blue and so on. 2. Look up information about the eight planets. Organise these facts under the following headers. a) Name of the planet b) Type of planet c) Distance from the Sun d) Size of the planet e) Number of satellites f) Interesting fact The interesting fact can be a piece of information about the planet that you find interesting. For example, Saturn’s rings are made of ice and dust, or Mercury is the fastest planet in the solar system. 3. Study the diagram of the solar system and understand the different sizes of the planets from the largest to the smallest. Try to determine the difference in the size of the planets visually. For example, think how different Jupiter and Earth, Earth and Mercury, or Jupiter and Mercury are in size. Doing this will give you an idea about how big or how small each planet should be in your model. 4. Make the planets by making balls of different sizes with modelling clay. Make sure that the relative size of the balls is the same as the relative size of the planets. There should be eight planets. Make a ball larger than all the other balls for the Sun. Make the rings of Saturn with modelling clay by flattening the clay between your fingers. 5. Cut a hard piece of cardboard to put the planets on according to the size of the planets that you have made. If your planets are large, cut out a larger piece. If your planets are small, your cardboard piece should be small. This will be the base on which the planets and the Sun can be put. Term Project 27 PNC_SST_G5_WB_Term 1.indb 27 3/19/2020 6:05:32 PM

6. C ut out a piece of black chart paper of the same size as the cardboard piece. Paste the piece of chart paper on the board with glue. 7. Mark a point in the middle of the chart paper. This is where the Sun will be placed. Tie two pencils together with a string. Fix one pencil on the point you have made and stretch the string to draw a circle around the point with the other pencil. Draw eight circles of increasing sizes until you have eight. You can increase the size of the circle by increasing the length of the string. Paint the circles white so they can be easily seen. 8. P aint each ball with the colours of the planet it is supposed to represent. Make sure that the unique features of the planets noted earlier are shown too. Paint the Sun yellow. 9. Cut out nine pieces of chart paper. Make eight small labels out of chart paper and write the information about the planets you found on them. On the ninth piece, write ‘Sun’. 10. A ssemble your solar system. Put the Sun at the centre and the eight different planets according to their position from the Sun on the white lines you have drawn. Stick them onto the covered cardboard with glue. 11. Stick the labels with the information of the planets beside each planet. Paste the label of the Sun as well. Your model of the solar system is complete. 28 3/19/2020 6:05:32 PM PNC_SST_G5_WB_Term 1.indb 28
