We learned a computer is a versatile machine. It can perform a different type of tasks. A computer needs different types of data to do all these tasks. Before a computer processes the data, we need a method to input the data into the machine. Similarly, after the computer has processed data, we need to produce an output of the results. In this lesson We will learn • S ome devices are used to input information, while others are to output information from our computers. • T wo types of computer devices. Identify the Input and output devices with examples. Now let us learn a few of these devices. Input Devices Devices that help us put data or actions IN to a computer are called Input devices. They help in giving instructions to the computer. INPUT DEVICES • Keyboard There are different • Mouse types of input devices. • Scanner • Joystick Let us learn about • Microphone these in detail. • Webcam • Light Pen • Barcode Reader • Touch Screen • Track/Trackerball Computer Grade_2_Xamcheck_(29012017).indb 37 37 2/23/2017 12:32:42 AM

Keyboard The keyboard is used for entering data into the computer system. It can type words, numbers and symbols. The keyboard is probably the most used input device. Mouse The mouse is a most popular pointing device. It is used to draw pictures and select objects on the computer. But it cannot be used to enter text into the computer. Scanner The Scanner is used to input photographs or pages of text directly into the computer. Joystick A joystick is an input device commonly used to control video games. It is also a pointing device. Microphone The microphone or mike allows computer users to input audio into their computers. It can be used for various applications like adding sound to a multimedia presentation or for mixing music. Webcam A web camera takes pictures and puts it into the computer. These are the most commonly used devices. See below a few more examples of Input devices. Output Devices Devices that take and receive information OUT of the computer are called Output devices. The output from the computer may be printouts from the printer, sounds on the speaker, or images on the monitor. There are different types of Output devices like: OUTPUT DEVICES • Monitor Let us learn about • Speaker these in detail. • Printer • Projector • Headphone • Earphone • Plotter Monitor (VDU) A monitor is the main and most common computer output device. It displays text, graphics and videos on a screen. It is also called a Visual Display Unit. Speaker Speaker is a very popular output device. It produces output as sound. It allows us to listen to music and any other audios. Printer The printer is another output device. It produces output on paper. It can print a document or an image. Do You Know? The CPU is neither an input nor an output device. It only processes the information given by the input devices and sends the result to the output devices. New words 1. Scanner: A device used for copying a picture or document into a computer 2. Microphone: Device that allows users to input audio into their computers. 3. Trackball: An electronic device consisting of a rotatable ball. 4. Joystick: An upright handle used to control objects on the screen in a computer game. 5. Webcam: A video camera connected to a computer. It allows its images to be seen by Internet users. 6. Projector: a device with a system of lenses for projecting slides or film on to a screen. 7. Plotter: A device much like a printer that is used for printing. It can work on very large sheets of paper. Teacher’s Notes • Revise the various parts of the computer. Ask them to identify the various input and output devices. Do not give the answers directly. Ask more questions so that they can discover the right answers for themselves. • G ive other examples to clarify the concepts of input and output devices. For instance, to make fruit juice you need fruits as input and the juice is the output. Computer Grade_2_Xamcheck_(29012017).indb 41 41 2/23/2017 12:32:47 AM
