Maths 1 Sorting and Grouping Ask your child to identify the shapes of various objects and food items at home. Ask him/her to find shapes that look like a triangle, rectangle, circle or square. You can use objects such as a television, plate, window, picture frames and watermelon to get the children to recognise different shapes. 19

2 Pairing Objects Involve your child in a game where he/she has to match an object with its pair. Use items available in the house to play this game. You can use socks, spoons, cards, crayons or pencils. Ask your child to pair the objects based on their shape, weight, colour or size. 20

3 Comparing Positions Use items available in the house to ask your child to tell the position of a particular item. This can be done using the picture frames on the wall, the vessels in the kitchen, the items at different levels inside a fridge or the houses in your street. Ask your child if the object is up, down, left, right, inside, outside and so on. ABOVE IN OUT BELOW 21

4 Comparing Quantities Get your child to help you organise the groceries you bought by arranging the items based on their size. 22

5 3D Shapes Play a game where you blindfold your child and ask him/her to guess the shapes of objects by touching them. You can use bowls, vegetables, balls, mugs or gift boxes for this game. 23

6 Patterns Collect some fresh and dry leaves. Arrange them alternately in a carton. Ask your child to guess which leaf (dry or fresh) will come next. You can also use forks and spoons, coloured papers or pens and pencils to make different patterns. 24

7 Numbers Ask your child to count the number of doors and windows in your house. You can also ask him/her to count the number of trees near the house, the number of glass or steel vessels or the number of toys and crayons he/she has. 25

8 Number Names On 20 sheets of paper, write number names from one to twenty in big letters as shown below. Put these sheets on the floor. Every time a number is called out, tell your child that he/she has to run to the number name and jump that many times. Take turns playing the game with your child. 10 Addition Ask your child to count the number of vegetables and fruits in the house separately. Ask him/her to tell you how many there are in all. This game can be played with vessels in the house, grocery items or even clothes. 28

11 Skip Counting M ake cards for the numbers from 1 to 10. (You can make as many cards as you have toys.) Paste the number cards on the toys starting from 1. 3 My Body Involve your child in making a vegetable human. Give your child four cucumbers for the hands and the legs, a capsicum for the trunk, a slice of tomato or a lemon for the head, three pepper seeds or cloves for the eyes and the nose and coriander leaves for the hair. Ask your child to build a vegetable human while naming the body parts aloud. 33

8 Exercise Play ball with your child or take him/her with you to a nearby playground to make sure that he/she gets some exercise. 38

9 Colours Give your child different coloured paints. Ask him/her to identify one object in the house that matches each of the colours. You can also buy or make coloured sand and mix it to get different colours. 39

10 Water Ask your child to observe all the activities he/she does with water. Ask him/her to name all the daily activities that need water. 40

11 Plants Give your child the responsibility of taking care of a plant. It is his/her responsibility to water it and make sure that the plant gets enough sunlight. You can collect dry leaves and petals of different flowers and plants. Paste the dry leaves and petals on the next page. 41

12 Animals Plan a visit to the zoo with your child. Ask him/her to identify the different animals there. You can also watch animal shows on television and ask your child to identify the different animals. Ask him/her to draw a picture of his/her favourite animal and colour it. 43

13 Birds Take a large paper plate and fold it in half for the bird's body. Make a hole through the centre and thread some string through it. Secure the thread with a knot. Cut one small paper plate in half and glue to the body for wings. Draw eyes and glue a coloured beak on the large paper plate. Paste the paper bird on the next page. 44
