7 The Clever Fox Warm Up Some animals are wild and found in jungles. They cannot be kept at home. Some others are domestic and are kept at home as pets or in farms. Write W for wild and D for domestic animals. Reading One night, a fox was wandering in the forest, looking for food. Suddenly he hit a big rock. He lost his balance and fell into a deep well. He tried to climb up the walls, but they were too slippery. Despite all his efforts he could not get out. He shouted for help. 46 Ascend G2 English MCB Part 1.indb 46 7/19/2023 7:51:05 PM

An elephant was passing by. He stopped to look into the well. The fox said, “Dear Mr Elephant, I know you are a kind animal. I am in trouble and can’t get out of the well. Would you please pull me out with your trunk? The elephant said, “Oh, I have to meet the king. I am already very late. I can’t help you. But I will come back after an hour and pull you out. Till then you can wait here.” Saying so, the elephant left. Soon a rabbit came hopping near the well. When he heard the fox crying, he jumped on the wall of the well and asked, “Oh dear, are you fine?” The fox said, “No, I am stuck inside the well and can’t get out. Can you please pull me out?” “How can I? I am such a tiny animal,” said the rabbit. “Why don’t you wait for a bigger and a more powerful animal?” He too left without helping the fox. After a few minutes, a tiger came that way. The fox pleaded for help. The tiger said, “Sure, I can help you. Then, you can join me for dinner too. That would be so great.” The fox understood that the tiger wanted to eat him. So, he said, “That is a great plan, Mr Tiger. But I have suddenly started feeling very warm. I think I should stay in the well for some time to cool my body. I will come out myself and meet you for dinner in some time.” “All right, as you say,” the tiger said. Then, he too walked away. By now the fox was very tired. He said to himself, “No one is helping me. I will need to plan something myself to escape.” He had an idea. He started to sing loudly. Soon a goat came that way. When she heard the fox’s voice, she peeped into the well and asked, “What are you doing there?” The fox said, “I am drinking the sweet water of the well. Would you also like to have some?” The goat was thirsty and so without thinking, she jumped into the well. When she had satisfied her thirst, she said, “Please help me get out.” The fox was waiting for this moment! He asked the goat to stand on her hind legs. As soon as she did so, he quickly climbed on her back and jumped out of the well. The goat asked the fox to help her get out. But the fox said, “You are a foolish goat. You should have thought of a way of getting out before jumping into the well. Stay here and shout for help.” Saying this, the fox walked away.
